OOO WEEE! Just picked up an, erm, "unofficial" copy of this today out of sheer curiosity and it's the BEST hip hop album I've gotten in years. I mean years . Restores my faith in a big way. I can't find a lame track on it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just errr, "borrowing" a copy as we speak.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont really get this album, its like a redux

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

a redux, mr lido?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Because all/most of the tracks are already available elsewhere?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

its a redux of 1991 but with all the good songs taken out

its a redux of 1991 but with all the good songs taken out

do tell. How so?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

don't mind mista Mullah, he always has some axe to grind about Kanye being too retro. even if all he was doing was biting Pete Rock, though, I kind of fail to see how that would be such a bad thing, though.

I'm looking forward to having the real album in my hands, but 2/3rds of it has already been leaked on mixtapes so I figure I've heard most of the best bits anyway.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

do tell. How so?

Oh you know... there are people in the world who labor under the naive delusion that sampling soul loops is retro and conservative, whereas making weird electronic noises is futuristic and radical.

When in fact, both styles have existed side-by-side in hip-hop from the very beginning.

Anyway, I think it's a really good album, whose impact is going to be mitigated by the fact that two thirds of it came out already on mixtapes.

bugged out, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I really, [BOLD CAPS]really[/] want to get this when it comes out. (Just thought you'd know!)

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty fucking excellent.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i hadn't already 'borrowed' 6 of the tracks. i'd be tons more amped about it. probably still pick it up. when's the official release date?

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that tracklisting is probably wrong, as I've got a few other tracks that purport to be on "College Dropout" but aren't on that list.

It's out Jan/Feb.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

3. Self-Conscious (w/ Lauryn Hill)

?!?!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I WAS wondering...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you made that up!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(it's actually hank hill)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No No I didn't! I got it from some guy's site.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hank Hill ft. Clipse - What Happened To That Boy

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my god nate

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

my stomach

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I didn't hear any Lauren Hill on this. I've played the thing 3 times in a row (bought it earlier today).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Walks has awed me, too. And the one track where the guy rhymes as fast as the breakneck tempo of the beat Kanye lays down is also too much.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Twista on Slow Jam, probably.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I nearly shat myself on that Twista track. It was like an aural plague of locusts.

stephen morris, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking hell!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Although the record is pretty great - especially considering the quality of Roc-A-Fella Albums excluding Jay-Z - it's pretty interesting what tracks didn't make the record. There is a duet with Talib Kweli - "Whack Niggaz" - that is hotter than 90% of the stuff on college grad., but yet somehow was shamefully excluded.

televisor, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I could easily put together a solid disc of mixtape tracks that either didn't make the cut for the album or have been made since. bear in mind that the album was more or less finished before the accident and "Through The Wire", etc. the tracklisting above has been floating around since early this year, but as far as I've heard, the only change that's been made is that supposedly "Home" (one of my favorites) will be tacked on as a bonus track.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard it up to that 'heavy hitters..... fall out' or whatever track. it's about as good as you can expect. kanye's beats go hard. i like that "i went to jacob with twenty five grand, before i even had a house, and i'd do it again" verse, however it goes, and freeway sounded good on it.

did you see that m. bleek interview where the guy is all 'so, the new roc family, you, b mack, kanye--' and bleek is all bristling and stuff at his inclusion, 'the boy made some hot beats but damn it's a little early.' i think he lost his turn.

cloverlandthug, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"through the wire" > everything else on college dropout

The Def Poetry Jam stuff at the beginning is terrible. So is the Jamie Foxx garbage. The Jesus song is terrible too.

The beats are all solid but the only song that can hold a candle to "Stand Up" "Lucifer" or "Ain't No Love (In The Heart of the City)" is "Through The Wire."

ben welsh (benwelsh), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this Kanye/Dirt McGirt track (We Make Hits) I'm listening to from? Unreleased?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that's "Keep The Receipt", which is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

"niggas had Pro Tools/ I had no tools/ karaoke machine, fuck it, I'm old school!"

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you think "Ain't No Love (In The Heart of the City)" is a hot beat? it's a great song, but have you heard the original? he didn't have to do anything to make a hit with that one.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's basically the Bobby Bland song recycled....but I didn't say it was better beat making than the College Dropout tracks, I said it was a better song.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Just as "He Got Game" by Public Enemy is a better song than most of the original beats on the rest of that soundtrack.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

gotcha

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

hey where can you get that advanced copy of kanye west album(college dropout)? i have checked all over online and couldnt find it.

if you know send me a email nmsupastrr08@aol.com

jason richards, Sunday, 4 January 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah did any of you get it via college radio? Rock-a-fella hasn't been sending us stuff i.e. no Jay-Z and its impossible to find out how to get ahold of em. I think it was because we gave no love to Juelz or that other guy. but I mean CMON! and then again I can;t imagine some dude at rock-a-fella dillegently tracking CMJ charts.

Sorry to get all inside college radio I don't know if thats appropriate or not.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 4 January 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so it's just a Lauryn Hill sample then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...

JoB (JoB), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like his cd, i love that song "when it all falls down" i can listen to that song over and over, but hit me back if you agree, peace im out

gababydoll007, Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you want your back hit?

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 25 March 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in total shock at the idea that was even an attempt at humor, Nick.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not enough shock to stop you replying I note.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 25 March 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My Fav. Song on da album is all of dem cuz he my Hubby!!! Spaceship is my song especially!!!!

Deidre a.k.a Baby Kanye, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the track list (according to Amazon):

1. Intro
2. We Don't Dare
3. Graduation Day
4. All Falls Down
5. I'll Fly Away
6. Spaceship
7. Jesus Walks
8. Never Let Me Down
9. Get Em High
10. Workout Plan (Skit)
11. The New Workout Plan
12. Slow Jamz
13. Breathe in Breathe Out
14. School Spirit Skit 1
15. School Spirit
16. Lil Jimmy Skit
17. Two Words
18. Through the Wire
19. Family Business
20. Last Call

Some of the songs on this album are amazing! I think We Don't Dare, All Falls Down, Space Ship, Jesus Walks, Get Em High, Two Words, Through the Wire, Family Business, and the beginning of Last Call are all great, but my favorite is Never Let Me Go. It has Jay-Z (which is a bad thing in my opinion), but it is so great! This album is so much better than recent "hip-hop" albums. *cough* The Black Album *cough* Beg for Mercy *cough*

Makaveli, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye West writes the best lyrics.listen to them very critical

Nisey Jones, Friday, 7 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Nisey, you need to leave your message on Kanye's official, personal homepage here, which he has created specially for dedicated fans such as your fine self!

Dame (JoB), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

not only do I loathe Kanye, but when I found out it was him who did that wretched song using Lenny Williams' "Cause I Love You" as the beat, oooh, I got madder.

You can make all the bad music you want, Kanye, but don't drag Lenny's classic down with you!

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Man that college drop-out was that fire. Though Kanye West is not the best lyricist he spit some hard ..ish. I really like Spaceship, Last Call, When it all Falls down, all of it homey. YOur shit was awesome, and whats up with all these songs I hear thats not on the album like that "I'm Coming home" joint thats hard to but anyways the C.D. was dat Fi so keep up dat work
