Does anyone have this working? I tried to install Nicotine but ran into random errors...is there an easy way to do it?

Berkeley / Sackett (calstars), Friday, 26 December 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No answer, but what file sharing / downlaoding programs do Mac users use to get music?

a mate of mine asked me to set him up, I didn't realise he was a Mac user....

Obvsiously there's Soulseek. Any others? and what mp3 players should be used for Macs.

I know nought about them

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 26 December 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There are so many threads on this. Someone described a way for Nicotine and pslsk (or whatever it's called) to work, I tried and they were just not up to scratch. So I'm using PC for slsk and beautiful mac for everything else.

kinski (kinski), Friday, 26 December 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and no, there isn't an easy way.

kinski (kinski), Friday, 26 December 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i have this working. maybe this weekend i'll put
together an easy kit for it and post a link.
christmas you know.

Berkeley / Sackett (calstars), Friday, 26 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

there already is the 'idiot's guide to soulseek for os x' i think -- look for it

another guide

zappi (joni), Friday, 26 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

do you have it working geeta?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 26 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

zappi thanks - Just got soulseekX working...seems much quicker than the multiple-hours-long install for nicotine, and judging from the forums with a lot less errors.

Berkeley / Sackett (calstars), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I use LimeWire and am reasonably happy with it, but I'm not a huge downloader. I know, for instance, that's it crap for finding entire albums.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Obvsiously there's Soulseek. Any others?

As an alternative to Limewire, there's Acquisition.

Berkeley / Sackett (calstars), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I use Limewire. It's alright. You've just got to be a little more intense about searching for things. i.e. - Searching for an albums individuals songs v. searching for an entire album.

DougD, Friday, 26 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

acqlite is really good also, I think it's acquisition without the bad stuff. check versiontracker

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 26 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the bad stuff re Acquisition you speak of? I've been using it for a while and having experienced no problems whatsoever. I even bought a license.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 26 December 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't there some sorta spyware or something?

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 27 December 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, definately not. In fact, I was looking into this a while ago (not pertaining to Acquisition per se) and there doesn't seem to be any spyware for Mac anywhere. The only one I'd be worried about is Rea1 P1ayer; not that I want that on my machine anyway. There's no big corporation behind Acquisition, in case it matters to you. It's just a college kid.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 27 December 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Poisoned (http://www.poisonedproject.com/). It connects to several P2P networks including the same one that Kazaa and such do. I've had less luck than soulseek, but it's definitely worth trying.

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 27 December 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, sean, that's interesting, I wonder why someone bothered to make a "lite" version--I downloaded that one 'cuz it seemed the safest. it's got a very nice interface though, and I like it a lot--perhaps it's just a streamlined UI or something.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 27 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the "lite" version has te spyware on it. that would be a pretty funny trick to play

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 27 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

mike h OTM, posioned is great.

no phil NOOO!!!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 27 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said this before when the issue came up, but Soulseek works fine on a Mac with Virtual PC (a Mac application that allows you to use Windows programs). Before Soulseek, I used it for Audiogalaxy instead of their lame Mac downloader. Mac OS X requires version 6 of VPC, under which Soulseek freezes up with irritating regularity, but it's still a hell of a lot better than Pyslsk, etc. Besides, I've heard people complain about Soulseek freezing up all the time on PCs. I've also heard that VPC6 running Windows XP is more stable than running Windows 98, which I have, but that would mean paying >$100 for a Windows upgrade. Best of all is running old version 3 of VPC/Win98 on a Mac with OS 9 (aside from the bitch of shortening MP3 file names for OS 9), which is totally stable, fast - and shouldn't be hard to fine cheap.

I haven't known this to be the case. But the connection goes down constantly, I guess it's the main server or whatever or however it works (I thought p2p didnt' have a main server, but it appears to).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 29 December 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony, the technical issues area of the Soulseek Board is where I've seen such compliants. Since it is a forum for discussing problems, I wouldn't expect it to offer a fair sampling of everyone's experience.

As I understand it, Soulseek's main server handles searches, queues, user lists and all that stuff - only the actual file transfers are p2p. You might have noticed that any transfers in progress when the server goes down continue even while it's down, unless one of the parties cancels or quits. However, without a server to collect everybody's shares and requests and negotiate what happens next, no further transfers can be started, and so on.

Sorry I didn't understand that it was a dl for the mac thing! I do now and I have dled it 3 times apparently. But I did a search for a well known artist on soulseek and nothing came up. Do I need further training?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Jacobs (LolVStein), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I was so excited before I couldn't type, but seriously I found six mp3 of Purple Flash with my first search, something I've been searching for ages. It's like I've come home. Thank you ILM for showing this to me. I'm grateful.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

No problem. Now that we know your user name, we'll be sending the FBI right over.

There are a few cosmetic changes it seems, not sure about the engine, but native Apple Silicon support is new. Intel version requires 10.14 Mojave by the way, my 2011 Mac Mini couldn't run it.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 30 January 2023 22:33 (three years ago)

My Soulseek hasn't worked in a while. It opens to a HUGE, blank window. No menus, no text, nothing. I've researched a fix for weeks but the only thing I found remotely related was the suggestion that it may be the result of a long search text. Does anyone know a fix for this?

In the interim, I've been using Nicotine. A bit wonky but it does the trick.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 31 January 2023 01:04 (three years ago)

About four or five years back there was some issue with text not displaying in certain versions of the OS. Something something about a QT bug in whatever particular combination. I haven't had any display bugs in awhile - there might be an answer here: https://groups.google.com/g/soulseek-discussion

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 31 January 2023 06:20 (three years ago)

OK, thanks!
