aaron: i am playing that cd over the system here at work for the sole purpose of torture
aaaron: its a Hiroshima record. they are r&b + crossover jazz + world music, and they are from LA.
aaron: 'nuff said!
aaron: "everyone take a stand and join the caravan of love"

jess: OMG
jess: they did the theme song to a cooking show on food network!!
jess: WHY DO I KNOW THAT??
aaron: did they?
jess: god i feel dirty

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(the only thing that could have made it worse is if i knew the name of the show)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah dude, that's half-credit!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It must be twenty-seven years today,
a good pal gave me a Stones LP to play,
exact same songs were on its either side,
such freaking outness swiflty warped my mind.

And I've for-fkn-gotten every damn thing that's happened ever since.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine plays a little game at dinner parties sometimes where he plays clips from a bunch of songs- some fairly popular, some more obscure- and he played "Blaze of Glory" and everyone in the room was like, "Oh that's easy, it's Bon Jovi!" And then I spoke up and said, "No, actually, that's a JON Bon Jovi solo effort!" I was simultaneously praised and ridiculed for knowing that.

Mark M, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

notfazed (notfazed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

They used a Tomita song for the theme to PBS's The Star Hustler. Tomita beats Hiroshima by a mile.
When devendra banheart told me that his trio was named Abra cuz that was the name of Karen Dalton's daughter i silently cursed him cuz i realized that i would remember that for the rest of my life.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i was recently challenged to name all four members of the original Overkill lineup, which of course was no problem. For shame, Roger Adultery.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Fernando Von Arb was the name of Krokus's guitar player. Their singer's name was Marc Storace.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm never embarrassed about music knowledge. I wear it like a badge of honour, right up until the precise moment when I get punched in the face for being a geeky no-life fuckstick.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The first number one song on the U.S. Billboard charts by a British artist was.............

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stranger on the Shore" by Acker Bilk

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

*Fernando Von Arb was the name of Krokus's guitar player. Their singer's name was Marc Storace.*

Marc Storace, unlike the other members of Krokus, was from Malta even though the band were Swiss. He previously played in a band called Tea. A later Krokus guitarist, Mandy Meier, subsequently joined a post-success line-up of Asia.

That's just off the top of my head, no Google involved. My head's full of this kind of shit. Any suggestions for how to get rid of it all?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Krokus opened up for Def Leppard on the US leg of the Pyromania tour.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Not embarassed to know that, by the way. Just bored and decided to throw it out there.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the following will sound like another "Kid from the Wonder Years grew up to be Marilyn Manson!" but, this one is confirmably true.
Half of Barnes and Barnes is Billy Mumy, the kid from Lost in Space.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, crap. the pics are the wrong size.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently Chevy Chase was the original drummer in steely dan before he left because he felt the band's sound was drifting too far away from jazz.

Flotsam of the Fishfolk (Flotsam of the Fishfolk), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

chevy was the drummer in Chameleon Church. They made one really nice dreamy pop-psych album.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"The first number one song on the U.S. Billboard charts by a British artist was............."

Telstar by The Tornados, produced by Joe Meek.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakira is 5 foot 2. Won us the £20 jackpot on the Pepsi chart challenge quiz machine the other day, along with knowing that "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits was a US #1, and the year that Dana International won the Eurovision.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dana (sans the 'International' tag) performed at the 1988 Glasnost Rock Festival, alongside the likes of Big Country, PIL... oh, the latter's gig at the fest was bootlegged three years later as 'Holidays in Estonia', btw

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 8 January 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a specific piece of info that does me in, it's when someone requests some information - for example first US Number 1 by a British group - then I have to expand on the answer - for example, produced by Joe Meek.

Works with Tatu especially...

Me: Trevor Horn did the album
Them: Who's Trevor Horn?
Me: 80's pop producer, bit of a legend apparently.
Them: Oh.
Me: You know that song Video Killed The Radio Star?
Them: Yeah.
Me: It was by him. He was The Buggles, the guy in the big glasses.
Them: Oh.

And if you're not careful:

Me: That was the first video on MTV you know.

Etc etc, especially when scrambling to keep polite small talk going (the twattish 'so how about them Dodgers?').

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyhow, Vera Lynn. Not Telstar...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Both of Buggles were at one point in Yes is presumably trivia, though it's not like it's hard to find. I mean, they _were_.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My boyfriend points out my knowledge of trivia from time to time. Personally, I realize it was much better a few years back. I recently discovered Vin Diesel used to rap. I can't remember where I read this... Oh the Wire. But can't find anything about it on the internet. ARGH

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I found out about it on
Vin Diesel Is The Best Movie Star Today

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Last weekend in the pub, I thought it might be interesting to sidetrack a Housemartins conversation (yes, they do happen sometimes) by saying Caravan Of Love knocked Europe's The Final Countdown off number one spot. Which in turn was knocked off the top spot by Jackie Wilson's Reet Petite. I thought wrong; it wasn't interesting, but at least we stopped talking about the Housemartins.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Damon Albarn's father designed the "egg chair", popular in the 1960's.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Justine Frischmann's dad designed.. oh hang on that's the phone...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The North Mississippi Allstars are Jim Dickinson's kids.

Carl Perkins played on 'Ebony and Ivory'.

Simon Frith is Fred Frith's brother.

(All of these came up on recent email exchanges w/ a similarly triv obsessed friend)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I just opened this thread and saw the word "Hiroshima" and went, "Oh yeah, they do the theme song from East Meets West...AND THEY'RE ON THE "MELTDOWN" LIST FROM CHRISTGAU'S '80S CONSUMER GUIDE BOOK."

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

:::beams stupidly:::

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, is Damon Albarn really Arne Jacobsen's kid? (egg chair designer, sorry to go back to that one...)

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anyhow, Vera Lynn. Not Telstar..."

Sorry, The Tornados were the first GROUP as opposed to ARTIST.

Apologies. Self-flagellation shall follow.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 8 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, do we get to point out that "My Name Is" contains a sample that Chas and Dave play on? Which is kind of ironic, as whilst Chas and Dave are Spurs fans, whilst Eminem's old mucker Dr Dre is a big Liverpool fan?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Arne Jacobsen is NOT Damon Albarn's father, although Albarn's dad DID design modern furniture. Of more musical note, his father happened to manage the Soft Machine at one point.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

> Me: That was the first video on MTV you know.

Yeah, but do you know the first video on MTV2?

"Where It's At" by Beck.

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Friday, 9 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually *bragged* about knowing who the Residents are.

I will never kiss a girl. {:(

lone nut, Friday, 9 January 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

David Bowie hold the copyright to popular game 'Connect 4'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 9 January 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellen Foley, the girl voice on "Pair o'dice by the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf went on to star as the first female baliff on TV's "Night Court". She also dated Mick Jones of the Clash and don't miss the spelling of "paradise" Trivia!
Bill Wyman had a dog named Hendrix.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Friday, 9 January 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody from Killdozer (can't remember who or any names--proof that I'm not that nuts) had a cat named Mark Farner [and wait--Is that the right spelling] from Grand Funk Railroad. I guess it made for good laughs, such as: "Oh no, Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad just threw up all over the carpet."

dylan (dylan), Friday, 9 January 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

that was the Butthole Surfers and it was their pet pitbull terrier.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 9 January 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! You win by a mile. I think I picked up the trivia from a radio interview with Killdozer, some member of which must have been talking about the Surfers' dog.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Gerald from Killdozer worked in a bakery before he left the band to become a lawyer. He had to cut pies into 13 even slices, which is apparently a very skilled job. I remember all this from an interview in MM in about 1989, and it's a prime example of the kind of rubbish I can't seem to forget however hard I try.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 9 January 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll never forget the awed horror coworkers gazed upon me with after i revealed that "Careless Whisper" was a George Michael solo effort, and not Wham, as it was released in the US.

my horrible, horrible brain. it knows all these horribly useless things---yet, how can i keep it quiet? ;)

janni (janni), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Paxton from "Twister" and such was in an '80s outfit called Martini Ranch. I bore all with that trivia whenever ANY Bill Paxton movie is shown/mentioned/alluded to...

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Before joining KISS, Vinnie Vincent worked as a staff songwriter for TV's Happy Days.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, here's the one that was really, truly embarrassing: the first time I met Bob Christgau, a mixtape was playing, and Soul Coughing's "Casiotone Nation" came on. Christgau says to his wife, "Hey, Carola--it's the bassline from [Thelonious Monk's] 'Misterioso.' I never noticed that before."

"Yes you did," I said. "It's in your '90s book." He gave me a look, fetched a copy of the book, looked up the review, and yep, there it is. The second it escaped my mouth, I wanted to crawl under a rock.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 9 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Oh, do we get to point out that "My Name Is" contains a sample that Chas and Dave play on? Which is kind of ironic, as whilst Chas and Dave are Spurs fans, whilst Eminem's old mucker Dr Dre is a big Liverpool fan? "

soz.. why is that ironic? maybe if Dre was a Arsenal fan..

search and delete, Friday, 9 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it's a very very loose definition of ironic. It also infuriated me because I can't remember which Hollywood actor is a supporter of some minor Scottish football team. It's something like Robert Mitchum was a big fan of Cowdenbeath, except it isn't.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Duvall is a supporter of someone since he was over here starring in the crap Ally McCoist vehicle "A Shot At Glory". Maybe Kilmarnock since that's who McCoist was playing for at the time?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 9 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rough Cuide to Cult Pop is full of this nonsense...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Saturday, 10 January 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Duvall, that's the one. A quick google check does reveal it to be Kilmarnock, as well. The same page that tells me that Kenneth Branagh's favourite footballer is Stuart Pearce.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 January 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Mick Fleetwood, being a big Star Trek fan, had a cameo in one episode where he was a dressed as a big fish-like alien.

Leee Majors (Leee), Sunday, 11 January 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom Morello had a role in one episode of Star Trek Voyager. Luckily I've never had to inform anyone of this. Until now, D'oh!

nickn (nickn), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Iggy Pop, being a big Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan, had a cameo in one episode where he was a dressed as an alien with big ears and glassy eyes.

four years pass...

The father of Lucas (of "Lucas With the Lid Off" fame) was the founder of Pottery Barn. This is true.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 12 July 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

^^^^have no memory of anything about that most recent post but i am loling @ it

i looked this thread up trying to find my first ilx post which was on this thread, a lie, and about damon albarn. seems really fitting. had my ilx tenner-versary this year and i've been thinking about ilx a lot, what it was like then, what it's like now, and how it's functioned in my life. etc. 10 years? for real? almost 11 now, tbh.
