What's the consensus?

And more specifically- if you know me, would I like this?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's quite good until the silly voice comes in

minna (minna), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, so it's like that, is it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What a great idea for a thread.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it is great - the silly voice makes it even greater.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the mu record.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

me too. it's got a positive message too. that is, if you think calling in sick to work, smoking blunts, and having sex all day is positive.
i wrote about it at pitchfork, but i can't make those cute hyperlinks to it.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

just past the link - it makes itself hyper.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 12 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The single grew on me.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I love everything I've heard Merrell Fankhauser on. I've never waded into the solo records - frankly, I'm kinda scared to, but I'd still like to hear them someday. I love all the MU stuff, but I think I like the H.M.S. Bounty record even better. Just perfect west-coast pop-psych. The Fapardokly record is excellent, too. The Sundazed reissues of both records are just lovely..

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's get Sick is Luverly, the wierd vocals just distinguish it.

It's My Name Is Tommi that you have to be wary of. It's what happens when Prince's Bob George stops being maladjusted, and goes insane.

Jedmond, Monday, 12 January 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the best track on the album and one of the very best tracks of last year.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The MU album is awesome. Once/if you get used to the voice.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 12 January 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I second all the love.
Played it repeatedly during new year's eve and it just gave the party that extra-narcotic vibe it needed... Rest of the album is OK, but I need to give it a few more spins.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 12 January 2004 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the voice is quite jarring, but the production is really something, kinda complements the screeching nicely.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Monday, 12 January 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Upon reflection I really don't get why people say Mu are so strange. I mean, most records featuring arty Japanese ladies don't have good beats and "songs". Plus, I still haven't read that they get licks from both Saturday Night Fever and Talking Heads. How jarring could it be?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dominique Leone." How jarring is it that with a name like that you're not the new Laetitia Casta? I don't think Mu are strange at all, though that may be because my Mother is an arty Japanese lady. Definitely one of those 'party bands' that are fun but wouldn't really work at most parties, though.

Le Coq (DarrenK), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the old Laetitia Casta.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the album is bloody ace, but let's get sick is my favourite track.

j0e (j0e), Monday, 12 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got the last four maurice fulton albums this weekend (stress, boof, ladyvipb and eddie & the eggs). this is severe overload. i don't think i'll be ready for the MU album for at least a few months.

i'm not sure how much i like him yet. i think there may be something going on here akin to my appreciation for asa chang & junray. they're quite obviously auteur-geniuses but there may be a definite (and very easily reached) limit to how far you can get into their world.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/m/mu/afro-finger-and-gel.shtml

i should really go to Baaderist's parties if he plays trax like this.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it went down surprisingly well.. Various people put it on 4 or 5 times during the night.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tell You Something" is the jam.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
just gave this a spin of the hard drive for the first time in a while and thought it might be worth (re)mentioning. maurice fulton's beats amaze me here. the cowbell, the hiccupping 'huh'...so great. the vocals, nutso. fantastic!

jds, Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nutso?

Meet Vicky tonight, she's 36 years old,and she's got kids, she's housewife, she's washes 100's of dishes everyday, but she's been seeing a boyfriend for 2 years, and she belives that Stephen, boyfriend is spending too much time at work. My name is tommi, tell me about your relationship. Well we been together for a 2 years, he was good to be but you know kind of attractive ly How has your sexual relationship been? Well before we did it nearly everyday. In the bath, in the kitchen 3, 4, times in 1 session you know. (ha,ha,ha,ha) Sounds very romantic, Do you belive in your heart that something is going on? Well he started about his underwear, and we haven't had sex about 1 in a half months. I will find out for you. Investigation day , We find Stephen spending a little bit too much time at work,we know why. I have some information for you. Take a seat. In fact he has been cheating. Has he? If you see this video, will shocking. He's actually at this motel room. Im sorry that I have to show you this, but can you see, more that 1 woman visited a day. No, That ,that,That fucking bitch! What he doing? Do you know anything about what goes on in there? No. Selling drugs or is he prositute? No, he has no money. Coming up next, confrotation, we see Vicki grabbing her bag, and hitting Stephen on head. What hell are you doing? Hi, how are you? How am I, How am I Would you explain what you have been doing. Hey would you explain yourself first. My name is tommi she called us and told us that she has got problems about her relationship. Yeah, she's got a few problems, when she's on period. And when she's not, she's totally fine. What do you mean? What do you mean? Do you think that you have problems between you Yes I do, I wish she's a bit more like woman, not only being a mother. You never home, You never home, You never tried to talk to me. If your just yelling at me like that, Then I never be able to talk to you. That ,that fucking bitch. Don't you feel guilty that what you been doing? Of course I do, but you guys do know about relationship, huh I can't do this anymore,I can't do this anymore. Do you want this relationship work out? Yeah, if she treat me like a man. You never made me to be a woman. And you were sleeping with my friend! How long has this been going on? 10 to 15 min. ago. You bastard. We got the evidence.

hai!

jds, Friday, 16 April 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Very good review of the album on Stylus the other day, which I'll be giving another shot over the week-end. So far I've been finding it a bit too 'scary' (L7, I know, I know..)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for posting that transcription - awesome!

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 April 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Mutsumi now and there's a new album coming in the fall. Paris Hilton will always be the jam though.

I miss Electro-House bobbins

Fetchboy, Sunday, 15 January 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

woah I missed that the Mutsumi album actually came out. Gonna look it up later (is it on Spotify?).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 January 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

There are instrumental versions tacked onto the end of the albums on Spotify and iTunes!! They're really cool!!

Yo! MTV La Tengo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 17 January 2013 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

They're all under MUTSUMI now instead of Mu, though

Yo! MTV La Tengo (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 17 January 2013 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

"Let's Get Sick" is still the best 2000s homage to Yello ever.

ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Friday, 18 January 2013 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the Mutsumi record is about as good as any of the other MU records, and the Syclops DFA record the same (tho perhaps a bit less "entertaining" minus Mutsumi). really looking forward to the new Syclops, but word to the future record collectors of the world: this is a band who will probably become one of those lost classics kind of bands. quality is too consistently good, tho the bottom somehow fell out of their popularity

Dominique, Friday, 18 January 2013 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

Holy shit, dude, this Syclops stuff is sick!

whoop i. goldberg (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 31 January 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

Maurice Fulton's alter-ego Boof is severely underrated.
