just in case you don't read The Nation. Which might be a good bet. I never would have seen it if someone hadn't given us a subscription for Christmas. Oh, and it's good of course. Great open letter to Ralph Nader too. It goes like this:"Don't run you big friggin' idiot!!!"

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, is that the letter to nader or the cure review?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, you can even read it on-line. who knew?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHHA... like Robert Smith can run.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

you can run bobbo, but you can't hide!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

b-but he wears leg warmers!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

He's racing for the cure.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i just pictured him as the german kid from the simpsons for some reason. "too many chocolates!"

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Chunks of Sadness - my favorite Chockie... *half limp smile*"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, now about the actual review...

Contract filler? So this is an actual Elektra product? I thought The Cure were just self-releasing things from here on out. How interesting.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

this is excellent but it's not even Douglas's best Cure piece. that would be this: http://www.lacunae.com/pinkpig.htm

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(of the three or four I've read, at least. he writes about them really well)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten about "hello, I Love You" and that i actually owned that awful elektra anniversary album with metallica and the leaders of the new school on it!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I just tried to forget. It didn't work.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna hear the 14 disc fan set. ned, probably has one right? he would have to.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

He probably has more than one.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't wanna hear the set, but I love reading Douglas about it.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, i'll read that one.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does everyone hate that Rubayait comp? the worst thing about it is that I can't spell the name of the damn thing. Otherwise, it's better than most tribute/cover-each-other type compilations. Plus the "reprise" cover the Cure did of the Doors was brilliant! "HEllohellohelloIloveyouloveyou*ROCKROCKROCKROCK**ZERK*"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Nation "Discovers" the Cure

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

goths wear baggy black clothes?

kephm, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(re: "Hello (reprise)"... )

It was the Cure paying tribute to the Gerogerigegege!

(especially since the latter payed tribute initially with their fine take on "Boy's Don't Cry"... "BOOOEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZ DONTAKARAAYYYYY ONETWOTHREEFOUR *****#$%@#*%$#*%#$%*$#%*$#%*#$*%$#%*$#*%$#*%$#%$#%%ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGUGHGH*EEEEE______")

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

no, the cure cover was fine. the metallica one was okay too. i barely remember the rest. i just remember that i played it once and then never played it again. i liked that neil young bridge comp though.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, didn't see that other thread. i wanted to give a shout-out to ilm'er D.W.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Contract filler? So this is an actual Elektra product?

It's one of those Rhino/Elektra co-releases that happens when there's money to be made, but not enough for Elektra to care (see reissues of Television, Love, etc). Although they might've just released it because the Cure's ex-Europe label was putting it out.

As for the Elektra self-tribute, the Zorn/Eye cover of "TV Eye" is alright, if not as good as the Stooges' version (obviously), as is Kronos Quartet's "Marquee Moon".

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, this thread erupted without me. PACE YOURSELVES.

"Chunks of Sadness - my favorite Chockie... *half limp smile*"

Hey, you stole my line! Well it wasn't MY line...

i wanna hear the 14 disc fan set. ned, probably has one right? he would have to.

Actually I never heard of it before the review. I should note that being a fan of the band does not necessarily entail wanting to always hear other people attempting same.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, and Douglas's piece is Rock and proof of his genius and goodness. As is the existence of the box set itself. As is the existence of the Cure in general.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm getting this box set anyway. I've been waiting for years to finally have on CD what has comprised on the B-side of the "Staring At The Sea/Standing On A Beach" cassette!!!! And I hope it has Cult Hero stuff on it.

Is there a track listing?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Silly boy, the search function is your friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The fan disc: I saw a picture at the time of Robert and (i think) Simon getting a copy. They looked sooo thrilled.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, i looked on the website, no picture. Must have imagined it.
They did say rob had toyed with the idea of reserving one song and doing it w/Cure.

So, my wrong.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The main problem with the Cure box-set is that it bumped Metal Urbain's Anarchy in Paris! from being the super important reissue of the month to the sidelines... bastards.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

dont worry -- Metal Urbain is still better than the Cure even for just the simple fact they never wrote or recorded "Love Cats".

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember when that fan set was being put together; I think it was all orchestrated via the babble-l? I'm soooo surprised that I never ran into Ned there.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You are a strange person, Mr. Cole. Teeny: I knew about babble-l (best list name ever of course), but 1) I knew some of the people who were on there and were pricks; 2) knew the volume on top of the lists I ran and belonged to would be too much. So I never bothered.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, you were on Babble??? I was too! I went to my first Cure show with N*ncy Evers*n, the listowner!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I had a sneaking suspicion you might have been on that list, that's why I didn't include you along with Ned above. I never contributed much and I wasn't 'teeny' there either, so you wouldn't recognize me. Is that list archived anywhere?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Possession is fantastic!

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 February 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Boo hiss, the babble page is no longer on the net. :(

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...
