2004 Grammys Thread

This is a thread where people can discuss the Grammys as they happen, and afterwards.

Of course, beforehand Andy Rooney chimes in with another chowderheaded attention-getting...um...op-ed piece. Or skit. "Football is a great game because it's real. We don't even know if what Janet Jackson flashed was real." Rockist shit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

we've seen those closeups, they're totally real.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Fate Joe is advertising an energy drink?!?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Fate Joe?!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

So the big opening act surprise is Prince, then? They're gonna have someone else join him, I take it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure enough, there's Beyonce. (Sorry, no accent) (Sorry, it's Fat Joe.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos makes predictions: http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0405/040204_music_grammys.php

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me if Larry Graham makes a surprise cameo!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm at work so I'm going to be living vicariously through you all)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This would be so much better if Beyonce was not on stage.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all Purple Rain-era songs (20th anniversary, you see) with a little schoche of 'Crazy in Love."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I dunno. I like the way she shakes a tambourine.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jakob Dylan and Carole King are on the show = CBS is running the show. (Even if neither of them are still on a CBS label.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino erases any doubt about the fact that he's a dork

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino makes for such a skin-crawlingly awful hispter.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce is wearing a tutu

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Beyonce thank...yes, she makes sure to thank the rest of DC.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Ellen a lot, but she's a huge sucking void at awards shows. She always seems TERRIFIED at these things.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ellen Degeneres in the Life of Chris Rock

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the idea of a rapper named Fate Joe! probably more than I would like the actual rapper's music, granted. he'd be all like "I have this sense of foreboding"--he could go existential, he could go gangsta, he could go bedsit, etc. think of the possibilities!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A Beatles tribute by Dave Matthews, Gordon Sumner and Alex in NYC

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino truly needs to STOP!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Beatles tribute! Sting! Vincent Gill! Dave Matthews! Pharrell! Awkward!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(and Pharrell on drums)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince & Beyonce was fucking awesome.

Who the hell is this balding dork with the acoustic guitar on the Beatles tribute? "I saw her dancing there?" how the heck can you fuck that up?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure I got that, but if you're saying I look like Vince Gill....well, I'd like to say that I'm about fifteen pounds lighter than the man. Or maybe you're suggesting I look like Pharrell. I should be so lucky.

This Beatles tribute thing is painful!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Prince/Beyonce thing I didn't get. Does Prince need her help?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

commercially, yes, absolutely

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF? They said that Chick Corea (?) is playing with the Foo Fighters! Isn't he a jazz gent?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or does everybody seem rushed and nervous?

(Notice that the black person is safely in the background where nobody has to see him.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

EXACTLY! (x post) I don't want Prince dueting with anyone unless I know for sure he's getting lucky afterwards.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not off to an especially promising start, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sting + Vince Gill + Dave Matthews + Drummer = worst band ever?

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, Michael. You've got to be kidding. Aren't you? I hope?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure I got that, but if you're saying I look like Vince Gill....well, I'd like to say that I'm about fifteen pounds lighter than the man

Yes, and at least, I'm sure. Sorry.

Pharrell looked so... marginalized.

(Target commercial featuring Cornershop!)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's kinda sad that Prince agreed to play twenty-year old material.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So, basically Prince fulfilled the same attention-grabbing nostalgia function that Simon & Garfunkel did last year when they opened the show, right? Only it's Prince because the Grammys are trying to cater to a slightly younger demographic?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No worries. You could've said I looked like Andy Rooney. There would've been problems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be much more exciting if Prince had had done the duet with James McNew.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

back on. back in a bit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bro -- you mean about the members of the band? No, I'm not kidding. It was announced in the press a while back.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina goes GOTH OH BOY!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen third-rate bands playing in the shithole bars do better Beatles covers than that.

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce. I didn't see 'em but I'll take her word for it.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the Polyphonic Spree gang singing with Christina?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Must she needlessly oversing everything? Nurse, fetch me hither mine nail gun.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

aguilera has hair like peaches!

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce.

I didn't notice that but...who knows?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no Michael I meant the "black guy in the back" comment. Sort of sub-trifean at best.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd give my liver to charity if someone rushed onstage and garoted her.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

She's not gonna sing the entirety of "Beautiful" on her knees, is she?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

She was in 4 Non Blondes, you know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeanne, please don't take this the wrong way, but is there a female performer you don't love?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So where was Moby in all of this?

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, haha, yes, plenty. Though I'm not sure there's a female punk dyke I don't love...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough then (though I bristle at the thought of Linda Perry being called a "punk").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Gwen Stefani, Ashanti, Britney, can only take Patti Smith in small doses, Fiona Apple, not bowled over by Karen O, Sahara Hotnights are fine but not fab... (stop me whenever you want)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex In NYC and Jeanne Fury not-hatched-from-the-same-punk-egg-to-say-the-least shockah.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

God! The Sahara Hotnights! They just kinda vanished suddenly didn't they!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gwen Stefani, Ashanti, Britney, can only take Patti Smith in small doses, Fiona Apple, not bowled over by Karen O, Sahara Hotnights are fine but not fab... (stop me whenever you want)

These are the ones you don't like, right? Kudos for recognizing the undercookedness of Patti Smith's "art."

I'm starting to like Karen O more than I used'ta.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am, too, funnily enough. Though I still haven't warmed up to Cat Power, Fiery Furnaces, Deerhoof... okay, I'll stop. As an aside, I think Patti was critical in helping to develop punk, but I'm just not a tremendous fan of every single thing she's touched.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, spare me the "I just don't get it."

I haven't to my knowledge looked at an image of her in a while so if you're talking about the hair, whatever floats yer boat!

Her as a creative act, well let's not go there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat Power bores me to tears. Have yet to hear the Fiery Furnaces. Deerhoof...well, it's interesting in a sort've "halloween sound effects" record kinda way.

Patti Smith.....let's just not go there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like moments of this show aped ones of THIS particular show...

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wondering if I'm just getting old and uncool, but that was basically the best grammy show ever. Bands I'm generally lukewarm about really knocked me out. White Stripes were SATANICALLY good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think, at the very least, it was the best Grammy year for performances that I've personally ever witnessed.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, they were just discussing this on MSNBC, but I don't remember seeing it: Did Beyonce and Prince really engage in a bit of a tug of war with the microphone? Did he really snap it away from her?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is Xtina trying to look like Julia Louis-Dreyfus?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Xtina looked cute . . . from the neck up, anyway. you coulda parked a car in that cleavage gap, though.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, George Clinton in having the least interesting performance in the funkathon SHOCKER

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

This year's show was SO much better than last year's

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

, Dave Grohl is going to play drums in the Return to Forever reunion.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG what the fuck song did they do? Which RTF was it? I hope Dave was rockin' with Al diMeola.

This sounds like the best Grammy awards ever, I'm crushed that I missed it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I think that was a joke?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

DAMN IT. That's what I get for skimming massive threads.

Oh well, does anyone know who actually won for best jazz album? It better have been Dave Holland...it would have been fantastic to have the DH5 perform and have to squeeze all the fire into 3 minutes, someone would have imploded.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, you kill me with how similar our minds work. I wrote something to the effect of "You could've driven a Buick between Xtina's boobs" in my round-up (which hasn't been posted yet damnitalltohell).

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina shoulda stuck with the pant-suit, she looked great in that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

PICTURES PLEASE.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about Mary's Big Bird outfit! my coworker Neal: "How many Muppets died to make that?"

xpost: Alex, there's nowhere near enough space between the boobs for it to be her, sorry dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

A serious Christina pic:

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice nipple shield.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

that's more like it. I did like the dress and the hair, but the cleavage is unsettling.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, they are someone...ummm...separate, aren't they.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Wardrobe provided by Kleenex®

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, somewhat...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect my last post has officially made me Part of the Problem. I shall speak no more of this.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Christina shoulda stuck with the pant-suit, she looked great in that."
glad im not the only one who thought that. i was beginning to doubt my sexuality.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They have just postponed the tape-delayed broadcast of the Grammies in Germany for a live performance by...

...wait for it...

DAVID HASSELHOFF!!!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am no longer sure if I love Germany or not.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, it's on now. That's Rhonda Smith playing bass with Prince; she's fucking awesome and looks nothing like Wendy or Lisa.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Big Boi just thanked "the Most High". The German translator said he thanked "Moe Seifert".

I'm moving to Austria in a few months.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I like that translation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the White Stripes love -- to me, they sounded like George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers with the guy from the Darkness singing.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted five Grammy questions on another thread:

three grammy questions....

But you can answer them wherever you want. If you want.

chuck, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the White Stripes love --

Oh yeah, but Prince dueting with Beyonce....that's groundbreaking, isn't it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, 'cause I think Beyonce's got a completely anonymous voice -- but Prince and band were pretty damn good.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles, funk, and Zevon tributes all got the big scissors, but Sting playing "Roxanne" on a stage where, as if by coincidence, Sean Paul was also toasting made the cut. To bed, then.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)
