Just got my bonus and I am going on a splurge later this week. Tell me some stuff you think I'd like and I'll buy it. Could be *new*, could be reissue, don't mind - anything from prog to bleep, funk to pop. Also pls tell me in 20 words max why I'll like it. Thanks!

The Cure box set. Because the old songs sound surprisingly new and the new ie unreleased songs often surprise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Doc, Malicious Damage is about to release a box set of Killing Joke singles and rare demos from the first album called Chaos for Breakfast. Goto: www.maliciousdamage.co.uk. Tell'em I sent ya.

Old: I can never remember if you like Wire, Dr. C. If you do, you might also enjoy that recent Homosexuals reissue on RER - herky-jerky new wave/punk w/ pansy-oi singing

Kanye West LP
Or Franz Ferdinand LP.

Buying new releases makes you feel young and vital.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shins 'Chutes Too Narrow', because of the catchy but intricate song structures and the actually interesting and literary lyrics.

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

A clue...just kidding!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Funnily enough, I was playing Subrban Light by The Clientele at the weekend and thinking how I believe much you'd like it Doc.

Modern production standards maybe, but the playing, style and approach come straight out of the 60's whilst managing to sound fresh avoid sounding too obviously derivative.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd second Suburban Light as well, great stuff.

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd third suburban light as well.

I think the J Xaverre album, These acid stars is great, but may be a bit, ahem, pastoral for your tastes. DJ Hell's Electronic body music mix CD, ideal for when you want to wear you leather waistcoat.

I'm awaiting the FF CD any day now, so I'll reserve judgement but based on the two singles I think you'd like it.

As for old stuff I'd recommend the first Aswad CD, a sweet righteous gem, and not as saccharine as the later big hits. ELO's Gold collectionclassic Roy Wood ELO and Out of the Blueclassic Jeff Lynne ELO, the OMD reissues with the bonus tracks and a Tornados comp Satellites and sound effects, all the Tornados a man needs.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

buy this:

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll never understand spending that much money for two songs, one of which is probably crap to begin with.

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy yerself a big plank of wood and hit some boring geezer with it cos it'll be funny.

is there a limit on this? we might be able to better tailor our responses if given boundaries...

janni (janni), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I fourth the Clientele's "Suburban Light" cd. Unbelievably addictive.

CL, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooooh, everyone agrees with me - I must be on a roll!

OK then, so tell me Doc: how have your initial forays into Prog been, uh, progressing (ouch! sorry!)?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

**As for old stuff I'd recommend the first Aswad CD, a sweet righteous gem, and not as saccharine as the later big hits. ELO's Gold collectionclassic Roy Wood ELO and Out of the Blueclassic Jeff Lynne ELO, the OMD reissues with the bonus tracks and a Tornados comp Satellites and sound effects, all the Tornados a man needs.**

Ha - got Aswad, got the OMD reissues and I have the Tornados too! I prob have *enough* ELO for now. There's a slew of new Roy Wood reissues - I might investigate the one that Marcello reviewed in UC*NT.

The Clientele - I have never heard them and based on what I've read I have imagined that they're exactly NOT my cup of tea. What do they do that's good? Also Isn't Mike Jones of this manor their producer?

Homosexuals - sounds good. A quick Web search revealed nowt - what's it called.

Prog - I still haven't got around to getting much more prog. I heard In The Court Of The Crimson King the other day in a recd shop and it's great. I must get that. Also some more of the YES reissues. I might get a bunch of prog on vinyl since I know somewhere that has excellent condition 70's LPs for a couple of quid each. What I need to do is get loads and immerse myself in it. Vinyl is prob the best way to listen to prog too!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't think what you've read about The Clientele that would have put you off Doc! As I said earlier, your name actually sprang to mind while I was listening to it! Think Love, think Zombies.... it sounds like modern re-recordings of material that should have been included on Nuggets 2 or Rubble or something similar. Specific tracks? "I Had To Say This", "(I Want You) More Than Ever", "Lace Wings", "An Hour Before The Light", "Bicycles", "Saturday"....

The Homosexuals album is called, extraordinarily enough, "The Homosexuals Album" - however I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll enjoy so much that you'll regret having bought it when the "Astral Glamour" box set (which, if my understanding is correct, includes everything on the album as well as loads of other stuff) come out in a few weeks time.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a big Clientele fan Dr C and I'm not convinced you'd like them, they might be a bit too gentle for you.

I think you should buy a Soca compilation - good music for the just-got-bonus spring-coming-on feeling. Try Soca Gold 2003 or Soca Leaders which you can find cheaper.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you'd like Serie Noire 2 mixed by the Glimmer Twins, here's a tracklist.

1. Boytronic - Bryllyant
2. Savage Progress - My Heart begins to beat
3. Blancmange - The game above my head
4. The Nick Straker Band - Straight ahead (reprise)
5. Green Fridge Music - Da best
6. Precious - definition of a track
7. Adonis - No way back
8. Crash Course In Science - Flying Turns
9. Green Velvet - Coitus
10.Die Warzau - Strike to the body (lil Louis'body blow mix)
11.Mr.Fingers - I'm strong (instr.)
12.Liaisons Dangereuses - Peut etre...pas
13.Giorgio Morodor - Evolution
14.Easy going - Fear
15.Bobby O. - She has a way
16.Sandy Steel - Mind your own business
17.P.I.L. - Death Disco (megga mix)
18.Rheingold - Dreiklangsdimensionen
19.The Passions - I'm in love with a german filmstar

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Man I wish I brought it with me today!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to think of it I think I'd like that one too Ronan. Maybe I'll treat myself on Friday.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan i got that "death disco" thing you were telling me about and man its good

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

more bleep-n-bass revival plz

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting to see him put Superpitcher on it. The other mix he has on Tigersushi is great too.

(My friend was going on about bleep and bass, check out the Tiefschwarz remix of Ghost by Spektrum, I've not heard it but it comes with a big recommendation)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mix albums are unbelievable lately, I need more money.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call Ronan - I'll get that. I have also been looking for the first Serie Noire for a while too.

Soca - yes. Thanks Tom.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

They were both on offer here actually, in some deal. I only have 2 though.

The Glimmer Twins/Troubleman Culture Club Culture Mix

That one's good too.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure that you'd like the Clientele either Doc but I think they're absolute genius.

I recommend "Hardcore Ragga vol. 1", classic upon classic, primetime Gussies business.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This one, I mean: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005BJCL/ref=sr_aps_music_1_2/202-6187479-1348632

Ha - got Aswad, got the OMD reissues and I have the Tornados too! I prob have *enough* ELO for now. There's a slew of new Roy Wood reissues - I might investigate the one that Marcello reviewed in UC*NT.

Hmm, In that case I'd suggest the 2 disc deluxe edition of Diana by Diana Ross. You've probably got that too. I suppose? I forgot to mention the new Ladytron upthread too.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, whomever suggested the iPod was the most spot-on.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I'm gonna get an iPod too! No Killing joke though Alex - sorry.

Billy - Diana - yes, yes, yes I need this. New Ladytron? What,a 2004 album? I have the other two, they're OK.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No Killing joke though Alex - sorry.

Hope springs eternal, Doctor. One day'll you'll see the....er....dark.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dr c - have you heard the animal collective?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Animal Collective.....interesting, but.....is it music?....or just something to put on while you're attempting to creep your friends out while playing with a Ouija board.
