fairly simple this - compile a single audio CD of your favourite songs that were #1 hit singles in your country (or any country you choose) at some point. a-go...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What, and give away the ending?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i know Tom but i'll be your age now before you finish that ;) by which time the views expressed here could've changed somewhat. i'm doing mine now - i've decided it's okay to include b-sides and bonus tracks (useful for some bands and hits more than others)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Simple?

I've been scanning the lists on Everyhit... god this is tricky.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That said this is an actual CD I compiled for DJing purposes i.e. I didn't have the songs on other CDs and I thought people might like to dance to them, so it's a selection of ones I like. I've replaced two #2s I'd put on with actual #1s too.

1. AQUA - "Dr Jones"
2. SPICE GIRLS - "Say You'll Be There"
3. TAKE THAT - "Back For Good"
4. CULTURE BEAT - "Mr Vain"
5. SNAP - "The Power"
6. KYLIE MINOGUE - "Hand On Your Heart"
7. BROS - "I Owe You Nothing"
8. LIONEL RICHIE - "Hello"
9. NENA - "99 Red Balloons"
10. BONNIE TYLER - "Total Eclipse Of The Heart"
11. MUSICAL YOUTH - "Pass The Dutchie"
12. ROD STEWART - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

19. LONNIE DONEGAN - "Cumberland Gap"
20. TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD - "Sixteen Tons"
21. GUY MITCHELL - "She Wears Red Feathers"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

okay simple in premise, certainly not in endeavour...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This also seems a good thread to say that in April as part of the FT 5th Birthday parties we'll be doing something called Club Popular which will be playing nothing but #1 hit singles. We need to sort out a venue though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh! ooh! that sounds SO FUN.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have put down all the candidates. There's 245. This is not including 'Young Girl' or 'Boom Shake The Room'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now getting rid of most of the ABBA. Also - Steve Harley, The Wurzels, David Bowie, Marvin Gaye.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh! ooh! that sounds SO FUN.

It does indeed. (This post also serves as a 'fancy meeting you here at 4 am again on ILX' note for Matos.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Frankie Goes To Hollywood, T'Pau, The Specials, The Jam...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

HAVE PITY ON THE WURZELS!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no pity for them, I am American.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

just clocking my choices now to see how many fit on a single CD - can you handle the predictability? we'll see...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Just put "99 Red Balloons" on it 20 times.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

'99 Red Balloons' isn't even the best number 1 of it's year - bloody ace as it is. that's the incredible thing about the early 80s - 1 rubbish number one to 9 fantastic ones...wish i could say the same about today's charts but I AM AN OLD MAN SO NO

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

At a glance, my least favourite year thus far (ignoring anything before the mid 60's, which I have very little knowledge of) is 1989. I nearly put Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart on as a token nod, but nah.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Currently I have 65.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

us chart number ones on my birthday only bitches (the GOOD ones):

1. Sly and the Family Stone - "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin"
2. Bee Gees - "Stayin ALive"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

42...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

35 and it's getting painful.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear, time to enforce the only-one-song-from-any-one-artist rule. Which means I have to choose between "Wannabe" and "2 Become 1".

It's not as hard as I thought it would be, mainly due to the huge number of songs pre-mid 80s that I have no knowledge of.

William, put Steve Harley back in NOW!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, you're gonna love some of the stuff I've left things out for...

Taking out The Reflex brings me down to 30.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This is some fuckin' harsh ish...

There's 2 records in there due to principles. At least one of them will provoke widespread ridicule.

I fear I'll have to choose twixt Geno and Come On Eileen...

Taking out Take My Breath Away gives me 29.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how long some of these are, but number ones are never too long are they? I might just put 25 on and hope. Maybe 26.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

it kind of terrifies me that in nearly 50 years of us pop charts there have only been 12 at least decent number ones on my birthday.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What were the other ones Jess?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Reluctantly we drop I Don't Wanna Dance, Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes), and The Sun Always Shines on TV. That's 26.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wanna put Love Grows back in...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And fuck it, drop Don't You Want Me and that's 25. Leave it at that, and I have:

Lonnie Donegan - Cumberland Gap
The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun
The Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore
Amen Corner - (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice
Desmond Dekker & The Aces - The Israelites
10cc - I'm Not In Love
Donna Summer - I Feel Love

Beats International featuring Lindy Layton - Dub Be Good To Me
Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You?
White Town - Your Woman
Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha
R Kelly - Ignition
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life

God, that hurt...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, I left Star Trekkin' in. First number one I can remember dancing to. Aged 4, auntie Pat's wedding.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, in an imprecisely chronological order with some vague concessions to 'flow' and probably too-heavily weighted towards the 90s:

1. Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling In Love With You
2. The Supremes - Baby Love
3. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)
4. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
5. Donna Summer - I Feel Love
6. Blondie - Heart Of Glass
7. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
8. Madonna - Into The Groove
9. Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
10. Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U
11. Soul II Soul ft. Caron Wheeler - Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)
12. Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer
13. 2 Unlimited - No Limit
14. Whigfield - Saturday Night
15. Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince - Boom! Shake The Room
16. Fugees - Ready Or Not
17. Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
18. All Saints - Never Ever
19. Tori Amos - Professional Widow
20. Britney Spears - Oops! I Did It Again
21. Destiny's Child - Independent Women Part 1
22. Aaliyah - More Than A Woman
23. Sugababes - Freak Like Me
24. tATu - All The Things She Said
25. Eminem ft. Dido - Stan

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

OK I somehow DIDN'T SEE "Yes Sir I Can Boogie".

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

tom: from what i remember -- i recognized exactly ZERO from 1955-1964, so i can't even comment on their relative merits, but give or take motown, early rock, etc, not a good show. (the two elvis songs were meh.) 65-68 seemed a bit of a deadzone. 71-77 is possibly the worst string of number ones i have ever seen (the osmonds, "the way we were", "50 ways to leave your lover", "blinded by the light", linda ronstadt...a few i just find annoying like "crocodile rock".) 80 was some kinda hangover from the 70s (the captain and tenille??). 89-90: TWO paula abdul songs, both meh. (and i have a lot of pubescent time for paula abdul, but come on.) 92: right said fred which even nostalgia can't save for me. 93: "i will always love you". 94: celine dion. 96-00 is mostly the fag end of post-swingbeat balladry, most too gloopy even for my blood. (boyz ii men and mariah for instance.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone link to a list of UK number ones please?

Also, why is anyone yet to put Althea & Donna on?

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

There Are Only 935 Perfect Songs... (CAUTION VAST POST!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dexy's midnight runners - geno (3:30)
- it has less baggage than 'come on eileen' (obv. still classic tho) for me and i enjoy it more these days as a result

beyonce ft jay-z - crazy in love (3:57)
- my favourite #1 of the 00s so far - i am still mad at Our Disco DJs for not mixing this into 'Take Me Out' at the weekend

klf - 3am eternal (live at the ssl) (3:36)
- is this a pet shop boys record in disguise? no, but for a few seconds there i thought i'd finally figured out how this made #1...

chemical brothers - setting sun (4:00)
- sod 'live forever', this is the real best song noel has copied from the beatles written

frankie goes to hollywood - relax (3:54)
- HUUH!

m/a/r/r/s - pump up the volume (3:58)
- DUUH!

michael jackson - billie jean (4:54)
- a floor went in search of some feet - some nonsense about a babymomma a nice bonus

blondie - heart of glass (4:32)
the jam - a town called malice (2:49)
freda payne - band of gold (2:54)
- can't think of anything to say about these three, be glad (they don't need it, but then none of these do i guess)

the beach boys - good vibrations (3:37)
- "brian wilson in the hoouuuuuuse, yeah" (daft punk, 'teachers')

the beatles - she loves you (2:21)
- twang-tastic and pretty succinct, best 'epic' ending for such a short song ever?

kraftwerk - the model (3:40)
- that the synths sound warmer than the voice/sentiments may be just one of the remarkable things about this song

tori amos - professional widow (3:48)
- because i remember where i was when i first heard it and just thinking 'what the hell is this? what has he done? house music is changed forever!'

madonna - into the groove (4:09)
- insert cheesy but apt lyric quote here

baby d - let me be your fantasy (3:50)
- in 1992 if you'd told me this would end up being a #1 single within two years i'd have said 'what?! how?!!' and maybe 'oh man, it's crap!' progress is cool

duran duran - the reflex (4:23)
- i think i look forward to the Popular entry on this more than anything else here - breath-taking boyband bombast at it's most...surreabral?

human league - don't you want me (3:59)
- bitterness, despair, regret, FUN

sugababes - round round (3:57)
- telling that i prefer this to 'freak like me' and have for a while - to their credit really, a perfect slice of modern pop with a natural glance to the past as is customary nay expected

englandneworder - world in motion (4:30)
- you can shove your 'three lions' up your arse - shame the outcome was the same either way

pet shop boys - always on my mind (3:54)
- should be 'west end girls' but that's a friday afternoon whereas this feels more saturday night, and it's getting late

queen - bohemian rhapsody (5:56)
- late enough (and drunk enough) for this even - you can always rely on a melodramatic nihilistic murderer to wrap things up proper

(80:08)

'Uptown Top Ranking' got pushed out due to length constraints, as did 'What A Wonderful World', 'Firestarter', 'Acquiese', 'The Fly', 'Cum On Feel The Noize'...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

William Bloody Swygart, what is this "everyhit" of which you speak?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I realise that is a bit harsh on the 60s and 70s but I didn't know half of them, so I'm going with what I know.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 16 February 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, this *might* not come to under 80mins, S'Express might push it over.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 16 February 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on, Doop was meant to be on there... I think I might well have accidentally taken it off due to its proximity to something rubbisher. Arse.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

my CD is SO white and indie :( ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, so am I

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine will have to be a 2CDR set, I'm afraid. Sorry.

Perry Como - Magic Moments 28/2/1958
Beautifully scored and thoroughly winning.

Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls Of Fire 10/1/1958
Cos you gotta have some rock'n'roll.

Johnny Preston - Running Bear 17/3/1960
OK it's not exactly PC these days, but I might not be here without this record. If this doesn't get 8 or better, Tico, I shall scweam and scweam...

John Leyton - Johnny Remember Me 31/8/1961
Cos you gotta have some Meek-ness.

Supremes - Baby Love 19/11/1964
Cos you gotta have some Motown.

Beatles - I Feel Fine 10/12/1964
Take your pick from their golden run. The intro swings it for me.

Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling 4/2/1965
Cos you gotta have some Spector.

Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walking 17/2/1966
Cos you gotta have some Lee.

Beach Boys - Good Vibrations 17/11/1966
Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine 26/3/1969
Archies - Sugar Sugar 25/10/1969
Three-way tie for best record evah.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky 2/5/1970
First heard this in the 80s. Stunned by how much it rocked.

Nilsson - Without You 11/3/1972
First record to make me cry, aged 7.

T Rex - Metal Guru 20/5/1972
It just had to be a #1.

David Cassidy - How Can I Be Sure 30/9/1972
Pop perfection.

Mud - Tiger Feet 26/1/1974
Xmas 74, Tom Browne confirms it's the year's best seller. We all danced.

Status Quo - Down Down 18/1/1975
Cos you gotta have one song to play air guitar to.

Typically Tropical - Barbados 9/8/1975
Jukebox soundtrack to first love.

Althia & Donna - Up Town Top Ranking 4/2/1978
Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick 27/1/1979
Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric? 30/6/1979
Can't think of anything particular to say about these, but they all made the late 70s bearable.

Blondie - Atomic 1/3/1980
See T-Rex above.

Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out 26/7/1980
Token disco pick. Infectious groove and general silliness wins.

The Specials - Ghost Town 11/7/1981
For the usual reasons.

Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) 27/7/1985
God, the mid-80s were rubbish. This was a rare treat at the top.

The Firm - Star Trekkin' 20/6/1987
Because I bottled out of including it in my C700 Go! list.

Phil Collins - A Groovy Kind Of Love 10/9/1988
My Mum liked this.

U2 - Desire 8/10/1988
Come on, admit it: their best moment and who cares if it sounds like Bo Diddley, you've never heard any Bo Diddley!

Queen - Innuendo 26/1/1991
I refer the Hon. Gentleman to my previous remarks on this matter.

Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World 23/4/1994
Even past his peak, he could still knock out classics in his sleep if he had a mind to.

George Michael - Jesus To A Child 20/1/1996
See Phil Collins, sort of.

Gina G - Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit 25/5/1996
Cos you gotta have some Eurovision. This I think I prefer to "Waterloo", "Congratulations" and "Making Your Mind Up".

Spice Girls - 2 Become 1 28/12/1996
I always said Emma was best. Now she's proving it.

Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around 1/7/2000
Her greatest moment. So far.

Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World 24/4/1968
Because it can be.

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)
