why does black people never want to rock

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

500 posts?
no, 50.

Jole (Jole), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, racist.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Try 5...

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, you're right.

Jole (Jole), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

can't you tell the difference between bouncer and hipster?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OH GODDAMMIT WHY DID YOU RUIN IT???

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hipsters and bouncers have somehow joined forces. Suddenly, dudes in Danzig t shirst and ponytails are sharing PBRs with bald dudes with cardigans

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

which one is the bouncer in that description? wait.. where the fuck do you live?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

NYC. all the bouncers here look like disgruntled metal dudes who were kicked out of Life of Agony for being too fat, or big black dudes that look like Reuben Studard but are way, way tougher

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread was much better when it was about how many responses it would generate.

Jole, Monday, 16 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

was he a big huge guy wearing a tight black t-shirt with the word SECURITY in yellow letters on the back? if so, then that's not racist.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Racist Mcgee

D Aziz (esquire1983), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

If he was standing near the door and you overhead someone ask him if he worked there and he said "Yes I do, in fact I'm the bouncer", you're probably not racist.

"Racist" flap at Empty Bottle

radio morocco (radio morocco), Monday, 16 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Both racist and completely correct.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 16 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Prejudiced, yes. Racist, probably not. (Not racist unless you want him to stand in the back of the room.)

This was originally a quetion posed to me, and I thought it was funny, AND slightly prejudiced, FYI.

Fuck if you'll find me at a Cat Power show the same night The Mendoza Line are playing. duh.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well, aren't they?

don't know...I'm not RELATATED...nor a fan.

Awful.

ddb, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I will admit to going to see Cat Power this weekend at North Six in Williamsburg--and the only black person I saw there was the bouncer. I knew he was the bouncer because he checked my ID on the way in.

Tab25, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a "ignanat" discussion. I guess those white kids I see at Kweli concerts are there for the buzz high.

METALFACE (METALFACE), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(How to really rile up ILM.. Ask if it's ok to see a black dude at a Jurassic 5 show and think to yourself "oh, he must be the bouncer")

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

he prob'ly is!

Seeing Cat Power at a show and wondering if there will actually be a show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

nice one

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone confirmed the existence of the so-called legendary "Catbutt Prowler Time" bootleg CD that apparently collects Chan's worst live moments all on one CD.. is this a Nick Bougas/Celebrities At Their Worst project? Does it even exist?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that sounds like the black hole of sound. (no racial overtones intended!)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like the reverse of the legendary Venom "in-between song dialog-only cut up" live show piece.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the Darkness haha

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Donna - to answer your question, the absolute worst show I've ever seen (and it made Chan Marshall sound like J Geils Band in comparison) was a Johnny Tunders Tribute show at CBGBs a few years ago. It was the saddest, most pathetic thing I've ever witnessed (and I've seen more punk rock basement 'first gigs' than I care to recall). A wise friend looked around and remarked: "I see dead people."

It was like the goddam Rennaissance Fair.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yikes!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i saw The Darkness here in sweden and they we´re quite few black/latino/arabs/etc in the crowd (very cool seing this arab dude doing a perfect justin-isg falsett behind me)

Jens (brighter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Does no one else see the intrinsic beauty in the phrase "Cat Power live be mad wack"?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Cat Power a couple of times a year at least since '94, when she used to book Monday nights at the Cooler. In fact she opened for a band called The Rock*A*Teens from Atlanta and they all stayed at my apt. while on tour one year--I'd been in a band with the 'Teens guitarist during college. She used to be good, really mesmerizing and freaky, then when she started to get attention, she became awful. I mean awful. The sad thing is, I think a lot of her fans think the on-stage self-absorption / psychodrama is somehow "authentic" or something. They yell, "We love you Chan" as she's up there, stopping and starting, blathering . . . makes me sick . . . but the show I saw at N.6 was really good. Having a band helps her.

Tab25, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tab25, didja go to UGA?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Donna, no I went to Earlham in Richmond, Indiana, but Justin from the Rock*A*Teens went there too, and he was from Decatur, GA. After college he moved to Cabbagetown--the band I was in with him was pre-'Teens. Not 'pre-teens'....oh you know what I mean.

Tab25, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Chan needs to listen to this album for some tips:

Seeing a white guy singing race music on .... oh forget it.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a big black guy in the crowd at the Cheltenham Gold Cup a few years ago and I remember wondering if he was security. Might sound racist, but you ever been to the Cheltenham Gold Cup?

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I've no doubt some Cat Power shows have been awful, and Tab25's theory about her having a band makes sense, but I saw her about a year ago in Seattle and she played half her set with a band and half entirely solo. Both segments were excellent -- no histrionics, no tantrums.

So, I'm saying she's perfectly capable is all.
