Singers Whose Music Sounds Better When You Imagine It Being Sung By A Muppet

After the comparison was made in Great Pop Things I've started imagining Rowlf is singing whenever I hear a Tom Waits song (sometimes I imagine a talking ashtray with eyes and a mouth). Likewise, Bryan Ferry's These Foolish Things sounds better when I imagine he's the Count. The absurdity is more stomachable in both cases when the singer is perceived as a bonafide caricature themself. Anybody else done something like this?

also ever since reading Rob Sheffield say the best version of "Call Me" was done on the Muppet Show, I've imagined Debbie Harry and a bunch of male muppet pigs are recreating the opening credits to The Wild One during the song.

"I'm Your Puppet"

Uppetperson, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Call Me" on the Muppet Show is amazing, as is "One Way Or Another". I had both on a compilation tape, and both are incredible. One of them involves a muppet blowing parts of the set up with a detonator.

No Doubt

bob dylan, because muppets are more attractive than bob, sorry to say.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I for one am damn sure that St. Thomas' albums are all sung by Kermit the Frog as it is, no matter what anyone says.

Roger T (Roger T), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, Miss Piggy blowing the fuck UP on "Milkshake." Guy Smiley's guest spot on the merengue remix of "Get Low"; Don Music's dancehall style doesn't really work here, and the Twiddlebugz do nothing for me, but Smiley proves again that he was born to crunk it up Latinate.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Gonzo's head would be making that "ding" noise on "Milkshake."

Also I can totally hear Suzy the guitar player doing "Come to My Window." Sweetums is clearly Bone Crusher, Oscar is David Banner.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Fountains of Wayne IS Kermit on vocals. I looked it up. It's true.

7thdream (cs appleby), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

David Gedge... because he already SOUNDS like one! (drum fill)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't all songs sound better when you imagine a muppet / sesame street character singing them?

___ (___), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The repeated "baa baa baa etc..." backing refrain in The Troggs "I Can't Control Myself" sounds *fantastic* if you imagine it sung by a Muppet chorus.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Lenny Kravitz is way better as Roosavelt Franklin. But most of you probably don't remember Roosavelt Franklin.

I'm trying to think of how Joy Division would sound with Snuffalupogus on vocals.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

.. and every band in the world could do to take singing/voice lessons from Grover.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

cLOUDDEAD?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no-ones mentioned the Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev yet. "Endlessly" and "Tonight it shows" are basically muppet songs anyway.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Kermit on Canned Heat's "Goin' up the Country" ...

and the anonymous sheep & chicken choirs doing the backup on "Atomic Dog."

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Rancid. Totally sound like Muppets. Mystikal, too.

Touche! :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The original of "Time in a bottle" by Jim Croce is pretty so-so folky-bungwung, but the version off the second Muppet Show Cast Album gets me every time. Probably one of my favourite songs.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I think that album has got the best version of "For What it's Worth" ever recorded too. It inserts some downright horrific narrative sections where some big scary hunting guys shoot a load of cute little Muppets and laugh about it. Utterly nasty and very well done.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes think Mike Mills sounds Big Bird, but I'm not sure that makes it "better."

rainman (rainman), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes think Mike Mills sounds Big Bird, but I'm not sure that makes it "better."
this is the biggest revelation of the day for me (I am impressed). Though, yeah, I'm not sure this makes it better at all. I hope this doesn't ruin "Near Wild Heaven" for me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm trying to think of how Joy Division would sound with Snuffalupogus on vocals."
best idea since hollwoodiscalling.com

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

All Morrissey songs. There's a funny Foz E. Bear connexion. Lots of Outkast songs too, perhaps none more than you-know-which.

Also, "Hooked on a Feeling."

rejoinder, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me -- I need to download Eric Cartman's version of "Come Sail Away".
Pop Songs Featuring Real Orgasms to thread (and it's sister threads).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

god, "If Moon Was Cookie" is the best song ever.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

sound proof

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the idea of a muppet chorus in "I can't control myself" was funny but maybe this sort of joke is also redundant with that band I mean they called themselves the Troggs, might as well have called themselves the Muppets

maryann (maryann), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i frequently imagine pretty much all the sped-up vocals in jungle as being sung by dancing muppets!

maybe i've been taking the crazy pills again?

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i've been taking the crazy pills again?
did you read the rest of this thread? please, if anyone's flown over the cuckoo's nest its Cibula for Miss Piggy's "Milkshake" (matt you knows I love you)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

miss piggy singing 'milkshake' is brilliant! the question is: what is kermit doing during the video?

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

probably thrusting his arms back and forth to the beat with his mouth wide open

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The muppet ensemble could cover the Polyphonic Spree nicely.

Executive Slacks, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

More of the inverse. But can't you imagine Tom Waits singing the Rainbow Connection?

Atila the Honeybun (Atila the Honeybun), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

honestly, Miccio, do you really think that if the Muppet Show was still on that they wouldn't have already done "Milkshake?" shit, I figure Kelis is on some Muppet shit already.

Geeta: it's clear that Kermit would be ace in the Nas short-order-cook role.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Placebo - if sung by Scooter (the stagehand) or by Geddy Lee (Canadian Muppet)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, a pretty obvious one is that lil' ice-queen Janice singing the Nico backcatalogue..

"Donna" by 10CC!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that's my song!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, see I thought you were saying "Milkshake" ALREADY sounds like Miss Piggy. That you could listen to it and actually mistake the singer for a specific muppet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

nine years pass...

"Opera Star" by Neil Young is plainly intended to be sung by Rowlf with a chorus of muppet-chickens.

bentelec, Friday, 15 March 2013 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

"...In The Spirit" by Faust also reliably conjures muppitude. What is it exactly?
