With Lee Mavers and John Power.

I quite liked the singles but the album I thought dull.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. the fuck does he need john power for?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh you mean the band in general? mostly good. "way out" had a sucky bit and an ace bit. the album was eight-tenths good.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe with John Power back, they might actually do something?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I'm fearing too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

THE NEW CAST! NEIN DANKE!

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

cast and the la's are about as similar as the smiths and the healers

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll be telling me that MBV are the new primal scream next

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them support oasis (who I dont like, free ticket, acompanying a friend) in december 94 and boy oh boy did they suck. There She Goes, is a good tune, was back when I was 11, is now, but they played it 3 times during their 40 minute set, not to mention the fact that they played my Generation a couple of times as well. For that they shall never be allowed to leave dud country. Anywhay, didnt one of them go on to form Cast? Me lud I close my case

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the la's were no better than cast - apart from "there she goes". mavers' rep as a great songwriter completely baffles me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno who the Healers are, but I wasn't born yesterday: I was tired by about 1996 of all these people saying 'oh bring back The Las'. Fuck off! I'd rather listen to Sixpence None the Sodding Richer.

Did The Las really support Oasis though? I thought they finito'd about 1991.

NRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Marr and the Healers?

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard Marr and the Healers. There's no reason to believe that a talented musician will always produce good work -- this goes for Mavers, Morrissey, and Marr equally, though Morrissey, and, to a lesser extent Marr, obviously had longer winning streaks.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mavers' winning streak consisted of one song.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

NRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Duddest thing ever. How long do you reckon before Doomie turns up?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The La's-The La's: Classic or Dud>
I miss Lee Mavers.
Why In The Name Of All That Is Holy Does Anyone Like The La's?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So here, from me, is an Oh Really?

At the time I thought "Quite nice" but the way Noel/StoneRoses/Britpop had them down as 'seminal' made me wonder why...

I asked today wondering if youse could tell me.

The mystery continues.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

At risk of appearing a shell-suit wearing scally, I really like the album. They shouldn't reform though

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud dud duddety dud dud DUD. The news that they're going to reform has just ruined my day.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Too late for this.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Cast were dud but like Dr. C I rather like the La's album

mms (mms), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Las's album, but....I dunno, this just strikes me as a very bad, very sad idea.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Of all possible reformations this seems the least problematic - it's not as if their meat-and-potatoes beat group pastiche needs to be played by young men, after all.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw John Power in the pub last week

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Of all possible reformations this seems the least problematic

Throw Lee Mavers into the mix, and you've got nothing but problems, I'd imagine. He makes Jaz Coleman seem entirely level headed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i just came...

the laughing doom-ridden jimmy the saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mavers himself dismissed the Steve Lillywhite produced LP as a total dud. He said it didn't sound authentic enough. He wanted the production to sound like a cross between Side 2 of "Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy" and "Street Fighting Man". Lillywhite's polished production values were not up to scratch. There is the myth about him wanting actual dust sprinkled into the recording equipment. Cast will always be remembered as JP and the plumber's mates.

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Cast will always be remembered as JP and the plumber's mates.

...and for prompting one of Simon Price's best ever descriptions: he said they had "faces like knees", a priceless (ha!) phrase which will stay with me forever.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on, isn't there a book doing the rounds about the writer's quest to track down our Lee? I thought I saw a review of it somewhere.

Yes, the knee/face comparison was a good 'un. Priceless even (groan).

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Silly me - you just done that one

Robert Moore (treble), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ginger sexists with faces like knees", that was it. What he found sexist about them I have no idea. Maybe he meant sexless.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Thsi could go in the FAQ as an answer to 'what is "rockism"?'

Lillywhite's polished production values were not up to scratch. There is the myth about him wanting actual dust sprinkled into the recording equipment.

I wondered where this orginated -- I thought Ocean Colour Scene actually boasted about there being real 60s dust on their amps.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF is up with duds? All the fan-ish reports I've read from Liverpool say that Mavers has been sitting on great songs from the past 10 years. If hooking up with John Powers is what it takes for him to start making music again, fine.

The La's were never very good live, and Mavers thought their records suck, so what's the danger? I just want to hear more material.

Even though I doubt this will actually happen.

There is the myth about him wanting actual dust sprinkled into the recording equipment.

It was from a quote where Mavers was excited about recording on the same mixing desk that was in the old Abbey Road studies and still having the same '60s dust on it.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mavers was excited about recording on the same mixing desk that was in the old Abbey Road studios and still having the same '60s dust on it.

Well, that's obv qualification for duddery, is it not?

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The La's were never very good live, and Mavers thought their records suck, so what's the danger? I just want to hear more material.

Even though I doubt this will actually happen.

Well this is ike with the Pixies isn't it? I honestly cannot understand what the big deal is with "classic" bands reforming. If you think your memories and dreams are going to be trampled on, don't go. I just don't get the fan mentality that wants to preserve bands in aspic.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The way I look at it, a band like the La's actually DO have unfinished business - and lots songs that Mavers never actually recorded - while the Pixies, well, they obviously are looking forward to the checks.

Well, that's obv qualification for duddery, is it not?

The quote was from like 1989. Whatevs.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well this is ike with the Pixies

That'd be a spectacle, he could sing 'Here Comes Your Man' while beating Kim Deal with a shoe horn

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The La's are fucking great!! Listen to the Holy Trinity of "Son of a Gun," "Liberty Ship," and "Doledrum" for some of the best pop music you'll ever hear in your life. Seriously! "There She Goes" is the WORST song on the album!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to ... "Doledrum" for some of the best pop music you'll ever hear in your life.

Now I really have seen it all.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on! How can you not dig that awesome guitar riff?!

"Chung CHUNG, cha-chung chung, CHA-CHA CHUNG!! Chung CHUNG, cha-chung chung, CHA-CHA CHUNG!! Aww no, don't go down to the doledrummmmmmms" Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww man.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The level of support for this calamitous idea is nothing short of shocking.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the La's live in 1991, and they were great!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Skifflecore.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen such a dud-filled C/D thread.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the la's were no better than cast - apart from "there she goes". mavers' rep as a great songwriter completely baffles me.

I disagree, because:

a: He knew when to stop his songs i.e. 2-3 minutes long, or less.
b: He knew how to write a good song.
c: He wasn't in Cast.

Why weren't there more joyous headlines when Cast called it a day?

Hooray! It's over-Cast

Cast-away

Cast-off

No longer will their music Cast a black cloud on daytime radio.

etc.

I love the Las album, its better than just about every subsequent dereivative Britpop album barring Definitely Maybe, maybe.
Mavers could really write a 60s-style pop song and unlike most of the later britpop stuff, the Las album sounds somehow fresh and exciting. It pisses all over the Stone Roses album, for my money. But this reunion is about as good an idea as a Roses reunion....

David Nolan (David N.), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the album has been unfairly lumped in with all the dadrock stuff. But reforming is an awful idea. When I saw them live (1990?) they only had about 8 songs (of which they all played twice at the gig).

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I was in a little remembered Indie band who Morrissey thought was 'boss' in the late 80's. We were called 'Bradford' and Mozzer recorded one of my songs 'Skin Storm'. Bradford Played with the La's at a big CND benefit gig at the Town and Country Club April[?] 1989 and at the time I thought they were over-rated as they were basically toooooooooo stoned to play [backstage Chris Sharrock had to cling to a wall when I was talking to him he was so monged!] Anyway, I've recently been caning their album and 15 years later I hold my hand up and say: "Brilliant - vibey, bouncin, cool, music." Hats off to 'em and hope they're good now. Oh yeah: "Skin up yer bastards" and: "Gis back that four way plug socket youse robbed off us!"

Ian H, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

CLASSIC!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

All I want to understand is why people think it's okay for some bands to reform and not okay for others.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Just read that a Live at the BBC album is in the works for September.

Plus, this is pretty awesome (old video of the band playing acoustics):
