Sorry to recommend a compilation record, but doo-wop was a singles medium, so as an absolute first introduction, try Rhino's "The Best of Doo-Wop Ballads" . Also seek ye out all of angel duster's rec's, plus The Five Satins, The Del-Vikings, The Penguins, and, if the prospect of dope-smoking doo-wop appeals to you, The Tokens' "Intercourse".

my introduction to doo wop was the rhino "doo wop box." and, if you are willing to invest in a 4-disc set, i can't recommend it enough.

two years pass...
The link between 40's Jump Blues styled R&B and 60's Soul (especially when you consider the Drifters catalog). Of course, the roots of Doo-Wop are more in The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, Deep River Boys, and The Golden Gate Quartet, but as far as popularity is concerned, Doo-Wop was the bridge from R&B to Soul.

We're all going to overlap the hell out of each other, but here're my picks:

(1948) The Orioles - It's Too Soon to Know
(1950) The Ravens - Count Every Star
(1952) Jesse Belvin - Dream Girl
(1953) The Crows - Gee

(1953) The Orioles - Crying In The Chapel
(1953) The Spaniels - Baby It’s You
(1954) Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters - Honey Love
(1954) The Cadillacs - Gloria
(1954) The Moonglows - Sincerely
(1954) The Chords - Sh-boom
(1954) The Penguins - Earth Angel
(1954) The Spaniels - Goodnight Sweeheart, Goodnight
(1955) The Platters - Only You
(1955) The Platters - The Great Pretender
(1955) Five Tinos - Sitting by My Window
(1955) The Cadillacs - Speedo
(1955) The Eldorados - At My Front Door
