I've read a variation of this quote in almost every article about the Moz-Mexican phenomenon:

"I cannot name one white person who likes Morrissey."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, people are stupid. (Canard 20 years ago: 'I can't imagine anyone who's not white liking the Smiths!' Yeah thanks Dave Marsh or whoever.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

THere was an article in Spin on this like a year ago.

djdee2005, Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if it's that they're stupid. I mean, they're Latinos in East LA, invariably, and they probably DON'T know a single white person who likes Morrissey. What interests me is why the Latino Moz movement seems willyfully unaware that Morrissey EVER had any white listeners... they have reinvented him for themselves. I wonder how they deal with lyrics about being "the last truly British people" and all that.

Ah, I see what you're saying -- out of context the quote looked like A. Critic saying "Let me patronize by noticing that etc." But flipping it around, I very much doubt this idea supposedly held by some that somehow he never had any white listeners either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

True. That first link is half about how the media has distorted the phenomenon.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I know. (Check the link to my thread.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Mexican-American, and I guess I could say I know very few white people that are/were into Morrissey. I always found it strange, too. But, I don't delude myself into thinking that Morrissey is somehow speaking to my culture alone or that he never had any white listeners.

This has been going on for years, though. When I was in high school (in white OC) in the early 90's, it was very uncool amongst the mainstream Anglos to be into bands such as Depeche Mode, the Cure and the Smiths, etc. (80's KROQ in LA). But Latinos always embraced this music (all Latinos, not just the ones into music). At every party I went, the DJ would always spin a set of this type of music along with hip-hop or spanish rock. Something was definitely wrong if I went to a party or club and I didn't hear "Suedehead" at least once, for instance.

kickitcricket, Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Where'd you go to high school in OC? I first moved here in 1992 for UCI and admittedly my head was in the clouds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to Brea-Olinda in Brea...ya know, off the 57. James Hetfield was are famous music alum!!

So you didn't grow up in the OC Ned?

kickitcricket, Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, as mentioned '92 was my first year here. Grew up in San Diego, Hawaii, Bay Area, upstate New York, went to school at UCLA.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That's right, a fellow Bruin. Tough loss to Stanford today......:(

kickitcricket, Sunday, 22 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Recent years have been disquieting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Latino/Moz thing has gotten a lot of coverage over the years. But...um...that first article quotes a Latino local politician, a Latina graduate student--what's with the "gangs" shit?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 22 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hello fellow bruins......... i had always heard the group of latino morrisey fans called 'Rebels'. they had that james dean, greaser type look, usually w/plucked eyebrows. dunno if it's still refered to as such.

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 22 February 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What's REALLY surprising is the overt racism displayed by Moz fans on the messageboard if you follow that link.

Kevin Erickson, Sunday, 22 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

JaXoN -

The whole "rebel" thing was vogue when I was in college in the mid-90s (it might still be). Although, the adoration of Morrissey was not really required. It was more the "greaser"/James Dean look you mention which was the primary reason for the moniker. The look was primary, the music you listened to was secondary.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that I emulated this look for a few years back then. I laugh now when I look at pics of me and my friends from those days.
