THE Phoenix?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the french phoenix? tell me more!

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was talking about this on the other thread. Air played it on their Breezeblock set a few weeks back. It's excellent!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

what other thread spencer?

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoenix "United" -- C/D?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ah. were there vocals spencer?

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen that mix on slsk too. from Jan 27.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sound clip here

new album march!

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! I'm very excited about this.

have you heard the Sebastien Tellier album?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they any good? I've always (perhaps ignorantly) written them off as not worth my time.

And besides, doesn't Spencer have some sort of bizarre fetish for all things French?

objective opinion plz! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post. i just got it spencer! haven't listened yet.

yes adam they're faaaaaantastic

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

skrilla, Phoenix is AMAZING! 'United' is one of my favorite records ever. listen to "If I Ever Feel Better" and its attendant Todd Edwards remix!!! Also, "Too Young" is on the 'Lost In Translation' if you already have that.

As for my francophilia, it's generally true in the case of women, Daft Punk, Mylene Farmer, Braxe, Alizee, Air, Phoenix, wine, camembert, Sebastien Tellier's new record (though I wasn't so into his first album), Gainsbourg, Paris, steak and frites, OH! and a certain psychoanalyst.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They are the best thing about 'Lost in Translation'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

steak and frites in france really is something different.

If I Ever Feel Better, both remixes are fantastic, Buffalo Bunch one will always edge it for me, so many memories, one of the best happy/sad house songs I can think of, seems as if it's about to smash into a million pieces at any minute.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The original tops them both. The lyrics are amazing. They're nonsense in a Black Box way, but more focused emotionally and they make oddly profound sense. Also, the guitar on that track sounds like Johnny Marr at his Smiths best.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mindless dance music fan Ronan has never heard the original, heh.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yay new phoenix!!!

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Which remixes of "If I Ever Feel Better" are worth searching out/soulseeking then? Listening to it today, this could well be one of my 100 favourite singles ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone know exactly when the album's gonna come out?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's March or April, the album's called Alphabetical.

Mil, Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"If I Ever Feel Better" is great, but "Too Young" nearly ruins the LiT soundtrack.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Too Young" is one of the most unforgettable and brilliant songs I've ever heard. "If I Ever Feel Better" is also great. I heard those two when the album came out, and I searched everywhere for it for a few months to no avail and then gave up. This reminds me I should really just download it.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I just found "Everything is Everything" and it's an awesome return for them. I am SO very excited about the album!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 February 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the new album twice and it sounds just like United, but better in term of writing and production... And I was a great fan of United... I believe it will be out in march the 23rd (at least here in France). The promo is watermaked so I won't be able to share it it on slsk.

snowballing, Thursday, 26 February 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, this is good!! 'tis a mix of the Neptunes ("Boys", etc)and the old Phoenix sound.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(the two 'famous' remixes of IIEFB are the ones by The Buffalo Bunch and Todd Edwards, tho I still think the original is best)

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

spencer i hope the psychoanalyst is not lacan

i like their first record a lot, although that country hoedown thing is a bit much

looking fwd to the next one

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 26 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a remix of if i ever feel better by le hammond inferno, or am i wrong? i heard them play it once and i assumed it was theirs... it was a dancefloor filler, anyway.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 26 February 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

'If I feel better' is gorgeous. Thanks for the heads-up, ILM!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

...and 'Everything' reminds me of Prefab Sprout - there's a very Paddy Macaloon chord in that verse anyway. And that's a good thing.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 26 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

amateur!st, I love "Funky Squaredance" *and* Lacan! I hope we can still be pals.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like this single, it has that French house/disco feel without being dance at all, it's like the disco not electro equivalent of Zoot Woman or something.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

not feeling the new album :-(

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the firstt album was all tenage romaticism. the new albm is all psudo hip twentysomethjingish. i doint like it eithr but at lest it makes sense in a cronological way.

:|, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

id o like everything is everything tghough. its start stop rythm is so dancable.

:|, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard it yet, but if mullygrubber doesn't like it, I probably won't either...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not feeling it particularly either, but there are about 3 or 4 really good songs on it. This is subject to change.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It started off okay but yeah, pretty drab in the end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Holdin' On Together is one of the last songs, and that's my favourite. But the songs around it aren't particularly noticeable. Not unpleasant, certainly, but there's nothing wistful or heartstring-tugging... ah well, for "If I Ever Feel Better" alone they are booked as classics for life.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

In addition to "Everything is Everything", "(You Can't Blame It On) Anybody" and "Holdin' On Together" are good, but the album is a bit lite. It will certainly be nice for sunny days, but without the fumbling-for-correct-english-words longing of 'United'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the drums at the end of track 5 and track 10 is good but you have to listen attentively! it's subtle, it sounds less retro than the first one. i like the challenge of liking something as bland as this but the production is a sweetener
what happened to all the lyrics abt yachts and funerals?

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM, there's nothing quite as compelling as:

"I can't believe that you want me to wear
The evening tails that will fit my corpse
I don't need a tuxedo
There's no bouncer in the after world
I only just left my dying bed and
Your making curtains out of my shroud"

sung in twangy French.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, that should be sung by a robot in twangy French.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone know when it's coming out?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

!!

there's a todd edwards remix of "if i ever feel better"?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The taster MP3 on Fluxblog right now is really pretty, I think. I'm looking forward to this one...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't even realized i loved this so much. i listened to the fluxblog mp3 a few days ago, liked it, but forgot about it and then all of a sudden it turned into this weird white boy soul addiction.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mark p it's excellent! its in one of those avalanches mixes, the one with klf and dj funk - check also the le knight club remix of 'too young'

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe "Alphabetical" is due to be released on my birthday, mar. 29th. Great birthdaypresent=)

Jagster, Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

awesome...

Stan, Saturday, 27 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a todd edwards remix of "if i ever feel better"?

and it's great. he loves Jesus so much!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 27 March 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

by all accounts phoenix should be like my favourite band! yet i'm still having a little trouble getting into them. WHY

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(love the song on the erlend oye dj kicks though. and actually, i'm listening to "everything is everything" again, for the 3rd time or so, and maybe i'm starting to feel it...)

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like the first record s l ocki?

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'Run Run Run' has great remix potential

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mullygrubber: i haven't heard it! but i will now!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 28 March 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Anyone Know if it's Coming out in the U.S. on the 29th?
on their website wearephoenix.com it says nothing about a U.S. release.

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Sunday, 28 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it will be out on import this week

duke everything, Monday, 29 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i like their first record a lot, although that country hoedown thing is a bit much.

"Funky Squaredance" was fine when it was the vocoded country hoedown. It was the part where it turned into that stadium rock monstrosity that ruined it. Like, wtf?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Think about what you're saying, a "vocoded country hoedown" is "ruined" by "stadium rock monstrosity"??? It only adds to the exquisite oddness of that track. And it all sounds great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, in theory, yes — that should be awesome. The problem is that the whole last two sections don't really do anything. Trust me: I'm with you in loving the idea and have tried my damnedest to love that bit. It's just that it ends sounding...weird, scattered. And not really compelling.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-03/24.shtml#story4

whoever (whoever), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for reminding me of the "halcyon days of Boz Scaggs," Alan Smithee. If that IS your real name...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the big bombastic part. It sounds like Toto's score for 'Dune' (see also Pulp's "The Fear"). I like the building crescendo of "funky squaredance, Funky Squardance, Funky.... SQUAREDANCE" still in the robot voice - which recalls Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, s'okay. It's the only thing really resembling a melody in that 10 minutes or so of the tune...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

çà fait plaisir de savoir que nos p'tits groupes de chez nous soient
autant plébiscité :o)

vive la google

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Doe's anybody out there know the title of the new album?...
Why can I not get access to their website?...

David Wells, Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the new album is called Alphabetical
and their website is wearephoenix.com

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that's funny (and kind of shady). Aurelie up there is earning points on the Phoenix website towards more entries in the contests she talks about by posting that link here.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 4 April 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm, just completed my first listen of the new album.

Everything is Everything is absolutely ace. The rest of the album is less engaging, with maybe 2 other good songs.

I'm gonna try and listen to again.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 11 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, 3/4 ways through the third listen and already i'm having more fun; i'm thinking lionel richie fronting "aja" steely dan/"rumors" fleetwood mac here.

best tracks

everything is everything (although a great song, it sits oddly as the production is so 'now' compared with the rest of the album)
if its not with you
run run run
victim of the crime
(you can't blame it on) anybody
holdin' on together

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 11 April 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoenix's music always reminds me of "Dazed & Confused" (the film)

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 11 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i just landed in this thread by googling so i m not shure if my question is right positioned but do you know mirrowball from the soundtrack of swimmingpool i think its a french band to very similar to the bands you all mentioned above so maybe you know where i can download it thx

chefchecker, Monday, 12 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
"mirrorball (let's do it)" by steve everitt

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

fourteen years pass...

This Starbuck song popped up on spotify and I had to pause and check to see if it was Phoenix - especially when he sings the title during the verses.
