So I'm interviewing Graham on Sunday; obviously I've got plenty of ideas and questions lined up, but is there anything anyone is desperate to have answered?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead obvious, is he planning to play live again sometime?

mzui, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, I need to wake up more fully to think of questions to ask. Don't let this thread die!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall resuscitate it every few hours, Ned.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll cover the Nouthallless inetrims then.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(or inetravls, even)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(to say nothingatall of missioninters & the Charisma break)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also you could ask him why and how Regal Zonophone (who were originally going to release the album) fucked him over.

mzui, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Regal Zonophone anything to do with Regal, The Beta Band's label?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, it's an old salient arm of EMI that was revived for a few of the more 'left-field' artists, Graham had a bad time with them, I don't know the details becuase it had only just happened when I mailed him and he was still very angry so I didn't wan't to push it.

mzui, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Replay: Why?"

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Graham's input to the Replay thing was less than minimal, shall we say. I haven't heard it and don't intend to.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Missy (bump).

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

are we talking about graham sutton here? if so, the most important question is: what the hell happened to boymerang!? why did he end the project?

willy, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, so who is putting out codename:dustsucker? anyone? is it shelved again?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Fire is releasing it.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

graham do u have a girlfrend? i always bump your music when i am about 2 go 2 sleep in the winter. hollla

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask if they're rereleasing Independency because I'm not paying some guy on ebay $35 for it, even if it is great.

original bgm, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they are, and Hex, via Fire as well.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow! Found a copy of Hex a year or two ago already but that's some EXCELLENT news there.

original bgm, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

daniel gish used to be a lurker on here, he emailed me once about 10,000 terrorists in england after i had mentioned something about a new bark psychosis lp being listed on dj martian's site.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump for Ned.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"How does it feel to know that Hood do what you did so much better than you?"

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah BP's guest MC spots and glitch-bits didn't work so well.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Snarf.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the idea that hood do anything better than anyone is kinda funny

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They do better quiet fragile indie songs that are often long and are released on Domino Records and are from Leeds or nearby than anyone else.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ned you are forgetting um uh

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yeah BP's guest MC spots and glitch-bits didn't work so well.
-- Andy K"

That's right. Because Hood have been doing that for 14 years.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha uh...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Bump, because now I have the record this can actually go ahead at some point in the next couple of weeks.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Right, I think this is actually happening tonight at 10.30pm, so jam in anything you're curious about.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Ask Graham will he be doing any radio interviews for the new album: e.g John Kennedy on Xfm or 6 Music [for example, Stuart Maconie Freak Zone show]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Questions so far include...

Bark Psychosis Questions

1. How are you doing?
2. ‘Alternative’ rock/indie seems to be woefully incapable of addressing the innovations you and Disco Inferno made a decade ago, while hiphop and pop steam ahead – one of Timbaland’s recent productions sounds just like “Starbound” by DI with added motorcycle/chainsaw found-sound riffage; do you see it as your job to try and address that imbalance, to try and drag guitar-led music forward, or are you unconcerned with genre-based trends and just making music because you love it?
3. As an addendum to that, Radiohead’s last three records could well be seen as an extended apology for not being Bark Psychosis; how’ve you viewed the careers of bands over the last ten years that have obviously owed a debt to your past ventures (Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Elbow, Hood etcetera) – have you been paying attention or did, as Boymerang suggests, you simply not give a fuck for that cos much more interesting stuff was going on elsewhere?
4. Is ‘the black meat’ a reference to Burroughs/Cronenburg and are you turning into a bug?
5. Why come back now?
6. Why use the Bark Psychosis name? Is it a ‘spiritual’ continuation of an aesthetic vision even if the band does not remain the same?
7. Do you consider being a producer to be your ‘occupation’ and a musician your ‘vocation’?
8. I gather there were label difficulties (Regal Zonophone) during the recording process for Dustsucker, is this true, and if so do you want to go into it and elaborate, or is it a case of ‘least said soonest mended’?
9. Are there any plans to play live, and if so how will you approach it? Dustsucker, more so than Hex, seems like a very studio record, plus the logistics of the almost floating pool of musicians must almost prohibit live performance?
10. What have you been listening to, and, most importantly, enjoying?
11.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

the cut off point for this year's Mercury Music Prize is July 19th, Codename: dustsucker is released July 26th - will Graham be entering the album the following year?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 09:25 (twenty years ago)

does he feel that the current gatekeeperless climate, where genre boundaries have melted, for real, (partly due to p2p) rather than as an eclectic pose, is conducive to his music, or that, before, the boundaries gave him something to kick against. ie, would he like to have been starting out now, in todays climate?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Good Q, Gareth. I shall be sure to sneak that in. I know Graham's keen on p2p - he leaked early mixes of Dustsucker himself to see what happened.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I may use less commas though.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:47 (twenty years ago)

My phrasing (I hope this gets yr point's 'essence' accross, Gareth)-

17. File sharing and a burgeoning eclecticism in dance music, hiphop etcetera have contributed to a ‘gatekeeperless’ climate in which, for many artists, anything goes. Is this atmosphere conducive to you making music or did you feel that, 10-14 years ago, perceived genre-boundaries and musical conservatism gave you something to kick against creatively? Has this internet-led eclecticism helped to galvanise a more musically conservative mainstream as well, given the success of acts like Norah Jones / Robbie Williams / Stereophonics etcetera?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Haha, this has now been bumped back to Friday afternoon due to Graham's hard drive failing cuz of a virus...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:27 (twenty years ago)

WILL I EVER GET THESE QUESTIONS ANSWERED???

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:27 (twenty years ago)

YES I WILL. Graham's a very nice chap to have a natter with.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
did you ever mention where/when this interview will appear?
if not, please do. Would be cool to know the answers to these questions now that we know these questions!

bleu, Friday, 23 July 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

graham sutton is over, you should interview andrew prinz instead.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 24 July 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago)

This will be published on Monday at www.stylusmagazine.com along with a review of the new album and a short feature on hex by Ned Raggett.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 July 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah. I had forgotten about that! (it was a good vacation)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Excellent! Where did you go?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 July 2004 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Behold!

Rah, I am back from Venezuela

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Ned, my gmail is being a nobhead, could you possibly re-send me the doc. to nick@beatbay.co.uk at some stage today? Thanks!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, not to worry, it's opened! Blasted thing.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:39 (twenty years ago)

ned's writing for stylus now?

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 26 July 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago)

I was invited by Mr. Southall, and write I did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:21 (twenty years ago)

So here's a link - review

interview

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:40 (twenty years ago)

And write very well to. It shall go up later this week, and a link here shall be forthcoming.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Very nice! Some excellent writing here, Nick.

And yow, a magnificent quote from Graham on comparing record producing to gynecology.

doug watson (solid air), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Indeed - the only sad thing about the interview is that you can't quite capture the fact that we were guffawing like fools and swearing like troopers down the phone for an hour; laughing never comes off very well in print, and the tone of the finished piece was more twisted to fit the record than the actual amiability of the conversation (after all anyone can hear the record, but only G and I had the chat).

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
There's a new BP article at http://www.stimulusrespond.com/
It's a pdf file, go to page 42 for the article.

At the moment I've got this idea for writing the next album, which is basically field recordings and voice -- that's it....Hopefully the new album will be done sometime next year, but no promises!

Probably another decade before this release, huh.
