theres no jeff mills thread!

so, whats people thoughts on this? ive only played the first 15 tracks so far. its sort of building up slowly, i'm hoping later on there are going to be more tracks like he played on saturday night at Lost, some of which were totally brain numbingly amazing (especially the corroding bell track, whatever that is).

highlight so far: headroom ~ ride the threshold

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I am very excited to hear it.

There WAS this, but it's a bit half-assed:

Ambient techno trainspotting (Jeff Mills / unknown)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm considering the DVD version - supposed to be very nice.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

especially the corroding bell track

'The Bells' innit?

Haven't heard it, i'm a bit wary about another Mills mixcd, there's some other stuff that has priority (new Pokerflat compilation, Luciano album) but it probably will end up in my collection. So it's a separate album/DVD?

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He's playing in LA soonish ... I've heard he's fallen off a bit, but I've never seen him so ... should I go? Should I skip a date with a cute girl to hear him?

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely not.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely not. Never skip a date with a cute girl for a night of techno, even if it's Jeff Mills. Unless she wants to come of course.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

quite

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

no omar, this wasnt the bells, this was something ive never heard before. it wasnt really a bell sound, it was difficult to describe, but it kind of split in 2 as the track wore on, (hence the corroding)

lukas, i saw jeff mills here in london on saturday night and it was barnstorming, a great night (it did help that it was a massive venue, packed out, electric atmosphere, dont know if it will be the same in LA), but he certainly hadnt dropped off on saturday night

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

wrath of the punisher and condor to mallorca made me smile back in 1994, do I really want to lnoe wat he does now?

egon krenz (slaytrack), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the every dog has it's day records are so much better than that stuff it is not even funny. He makes good on the promise of Detroit techno as future jazz. I am old and bitter and I hate everything, but those record make me smile.

Former Supposed So Called Nihilist Teenage Drug Disco Addiction Counselor (mjt), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

if she wants to come then you REALLY shouldn't skip that date!

(sorry)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Last saw him about 18 months ago, he has fallen off, but he's fallen off from such great heights that its still well worth seeing...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What, for the splat? I saw him two years ago and he made everybody go bananas, ??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

is that some oblique banana peel joke?

mills mix cd's never make sense to me because he has no ability to SLOW THE FUCK DOWN, which is fine live, but doesnt make me want to put it on much at home.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's a bit gonzo, you put on track 1 and there's like 8 seconds of moody synth and then before you know it you're expected to be flinging plates around your fucking kitchen or something, like 30 seconds in it's just BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG.

I'd like to hear it out, maybe I don't like techno enough for hearing it at home I guess. Or that kind of techno.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to Cycle 30 right now...

I don't feel like flinging kitchen utensils.

Strongo, you need listen to Mills loudly when you are driving down the freeway on a nasty gray day.

Former Supposed So Called Nihilist Teenage Drug Disco Addiction Counselor (mjt), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes! i was just about to come back and say having tried out the extremist today driving (it's kinda nasty but balmy enough to keep the windows open) that i forgot how good mills is for driving.

Former Supposed So Called Nihilist Teenage Drug Disco Addiction Counselor (mjt), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops for extremist read exhibitionist there. it's kinda same-y for me (or maybe mills-y) until about track 20 when it really picks up.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

bang that shit at the gym.

we used to listen to the liquid room mix to get psyched when we'd have to go to parties in unfamiliar/lame neighborhoods. (being good friends with a mobile dj can be fun, but more often than not - it's not!)

oh yeah, guess I should have checked there. But, you know, he's got stuff on a gazillion labels. I love Mills, but I do find him kind of hard to keep up with. I own around 10 cds, but I haven't bought a new one since Metropolis, as I found that a bit disappointing.

This will probably be pretty good though.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Metropolis was like the prototype for the Every Dog... records. He was reaching for something but did not quite get there. I think that is why he is still important, he is still moving forward. He stumbles sometimes, but he is deadly when he zero's in on an idea and fleshes it out.

Born-Again Pubescent Undercover Pocket Nihilist Crochet Ninja (mjt), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember Metropolis being great, I should dig it out again.

Haven't heard Exhibitionist but The Extremist makes me want to learn to drive so it can be driving music.

hilarious!

i am excited to hear this. i havent heard all of metropolis but some of the tracks are amazing. i have 2 of the "every dog" packs on vinyl (gold and silver... is there another?) and they dont amaze as much as "praefecture" but are more consistent i imagine.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

strictly limited 2000 pressing editions. I have vol's 2 and 3 on vinyl, and mp3's of 1 and 4. Nobody on ILM believes me when I rant and rave about how dope those records are, but their 2nd hand value says it all.

(x-post AG)

Strongo in not being agorophobic and getting buff at the same time Shockah!

(X-post Senior Goatington)

There has been talk about the Metropolis dvd for awhile now and I will believe it when I see it. I actually saw the edit at a screening at the Submerge building with Jeff Mills doing a Q&A session after the screening. It is not the full version of the film, it is actually an edit of the original with additional cuts and digital effects. Don't expect a full version of Metropolis with a Mills soundtrack that is sync'ed to the screen action. The music was composed independently of the video and does not directly corespond to the film. It was kind of cool, but not as cool as you would expect.

Meeting Jeff Mills and having a discussion with him after the film was absolutely fantastic. My whole understanding of techno changed when I met him. It wasn't that he set me staight on history or played me these rosetta stone dance records. It was just his attitude and demeanor that put those records into context for me. On the Derrick May thread everybody dogged me out for saying that you cannot understand Detroit techno unless you have come here, and this was exactly the experience I was referring to. Being in the situation and speaking with him about his music completely changed my view of his work.

(x-post ryan)

Fucking yeah, Gareth! There is something inherently wrong with going to a Mills gig and being all VIP like you are in some bling rap video. Being all P. diddy at a techno gig is so not futuristic.

(x-post you know who...)

i have the dvd and it is ok. its him. in a room. all black. wearing black. he plays. thats it. sometimes the camera does focus on his hands, and the mixer, but sometimes you are just looking at him. i wish there was a live dvd, with the same focus on the dj and technique, but with, you know, dancing, lights, etc (i wish there was a techno website like the uk's drum and bass arena, that featured live djing in clubs from the best of the best, with cameras allowing you to see vinyl/mixer manipulations). obviously the mixing is sick.

Well that was strange! I guess that's his "tribute to Detroit" set. (yeah, yeah cue jokes about "when is it not.") Some pretty rough transitions, very un-Mills-like; never heard him do a set like that ("The Bells" into "Seven Nation Army"??) Good fun, though.

Thanks for the heads-up, Martian!

Far too much hate for "Blue Potential" ... Detroit techno lends itself well to orchestral music (the synths already sound like strings). I can't put my finger on why, but it feels like Mills accompanies the orchestra, not the other way around (which I think would suck). That is, the orchestra is the star (for instance, I can't imagine dancing to any of this, not even in my apartment when nobody was looking).

Following-up his incredibly good "Contact Special" with yet another full-length excursion available only as a Limited Japanese import, Jeff Mills seems to have hit his stride with "One Man Spaceship", for our money one of his finest, most relevant releases to date. Positioning himself at some kind of majestic axis-point that takes in the finest aspects of classic Sahko minimalism, the more recent percussive variations of Sleeparchive and the peerless reductions of classic Rob Hood, Mills has here delivered an arrangement of minimal techno that's about as far removed from the more recent European "minimal" crop as can be, and the results are just incredible! Mills' fascination with Japanese culture and Sci-Fi lends the material here much of its narrative core, as well as an underlying aural theme, but more than anything else its the fact that Mills has managed to keep himself so brilliantly ahead of the curve that makes this album so wondrous and engrossing. Awesome!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 27 January 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Japanese-only cd compilation of the hugely limited 7” series released by Mills over the last 12 months. The 7” format has often had a strange impact on producers (perhaps it’s the need to create music that has to somehow stand on its own, striving for individuality, accessability and all within the parameters and time constraints offered by the limited surface area) - and despite the more anonymous nature of the genre, the format has willed Mills into producing some of his most advanced, layered and inspired material in what has been a long and illustrious career. These sets of 7”s (released in 3 groups of triple 7”s and only available at Axis events around the world and a very small number of outlets) amount to 18 tracks that ooze an analogue warmth and mastery of minimalism that stand as a masterclass for anyone dipping their toes into the genre. Combined with the textured melodicism and soundscaping most recently evidenced on the brilliant Metropolis and Three Ages releases, “Contact Special” for me somehow manages to play as the most rounded, complete and utterly absorbing full-length ever released by this master producer. This album will extend the narrative into an arena well connected with Techno’s past and brilliantly striding into it’s future. Highly Recomended.

heard them last year, it was okay, not mindblowing.. sort of hard to remember subtle really (moreso than the "every dog.." stuff). sounded fantastic, but not much more than good sound design (yes, prob. misusing that term I know...) in the end.

fandango, Sunday, 3 February 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

subtle is a good word. the drums are not foregrounded. i hope the rediscovery of deep house and techno sounds does not pass this guy up because he is still making brilliant and rigorous music that is all his own and has all of the sound elements that are reemerging as the popular choice.

tricky, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

i am imagining the new material as a more concise, more percussive version of the "relevee" sound.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

i know that's a weird analogy but there's definitely something tangerine dream-ish about the "metropolis" material and i'd that things like "contact special" were playing that up.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

"analogue warmth and mastery of minimalism" <-- see the delia and gavin liveset called "and did we mention our disco"

Whatever happened to Susan Douglas? She was crazy.

jim, Thursday, 7 February 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think that's a weird analogy at all. it seems a little left field, but they both have that space thing going on (for lack of more eloquent words at the moment). contact special is less melodramatic and more techno than metropolis. he keeps on getting more and more refined. i will hunt down that live set.

He played at the Barbican last night with a full symphony orchestra and it was astonishing. Focussed on the more melodic parts of his catalogue, with virtually no electronic elements at all, Mills at the side behind a drum machine and the orchestra's percussion section going mental.

I really wasn't sure if it would work but it really did - it would have been so easy to just plump for rudimentary arrangements but the orchestra was really used to its full potential. Actual bells for The Bells, obviously, people went apeshit for that, I looked down from the balcony and could just see this whole concert hall raving. Plus they encored with a version of Ashford & Simpson's Bourgie Bourgie.

Also apparently there's an Exhibitionist 2? I missed that altogether.
