Besides Soundmurderer and the Rephlex gang we get to hear Plasticman and Mark One for the first time out here. Sorry for the plug but I'm excited.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

well maybe not GRIMED

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there such a thing as "indie-grime"? this sounds like whatever that would be.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite sure. Not sure how that was supposed to be meant. ????? Should that be meant as they are the college radio darlings of sub-low or grime or whatever they are called? I get spooked easily by genre classification.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer OTM. Though something inside me wants to go to this.

Soundmurderer - Hmmmm, okay.
Mark One/Plasticman - mind numbingly dull with occasional flourishes of goodness
Tigerbeat - stab me in the face, please. I can't take it anymore.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

we were walking out of club 6 after a sweaty night of dancing and my wife got her hair petted by a crack whore

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

$7, though. Hmmmmmm.....

(x-post okay, then)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(interested in this at all, J?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna go. I don't know much about what Plasticman/Mark One sound like (I've heard that Technotronic knock off and nothing else) but for Soundmurderer alone it should be worth it. Tigerbeat6 is yawn though (unless it was Rupture or the Bug, that would be worthwhile.) And yeah it's fuckin' cheap!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't heard plasticman in years. was wholy unthrilled by the decks, fx & 909. is the rest drill'n'bass? probably not really interested

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cs appleby, where's the plug? how are you associated?

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wrong Plasticman! This is the UK Garage one!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not the same Plasticman, JaXoN. That is, if you're thinking about Ritchie Hawtin,

(x-post)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, well then, i know nothing about any of them

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Bogdan Racynski is drill'n'bass.
Soundmurderer is ragga jungle.
Mark One/Plasticman is garage/dubstep.

I've not heard the others.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'd definitely be interested to see Soundmurderer.

Alex, do you know if the Kompakt tour that is hitting NYC is coming over this way?

(I'm still upset about missing Mayer/Voigt)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oops I didn't notice Bogdan there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not. :( Miami, Chicago, NYC and then nuthing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll be back soon, surely.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i may go. i like soundmurderer and im not exactly adverse to plasticman/markone even though they're sorta the 'serious' go-nowhere leg of grime. the tb6 artists featured i've barely heard of but i guess it wouldn't be surprising if it was just 606 pranx. that goes for bogdan too unless he's supposed to be different live than on record.

scissors (Honda), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

rephlex grime

scissors (Honda), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

braingrime

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll probably go to this.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The one sad thing is that it may end up being a total chin-stroking non-dancing hipster affair (this seems to be a running theme of Tigerbeat6 shows). But I was scared about the same thing at the Kompakt show and it turned out to be totally unfounded.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

or 20 people in the front moshing around as was the case the last time i saw kid606 play

scissors (Honda), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the latter would be preferable to the stroking of the chins and the non-dancing. Though I don't really know how people "dance" to Soundmurderer or Plasticman.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not going to that Kompakt show is going to haunt me until my dying day.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling not buying cheap tickets to NYC and seeing the Kompakt/Rephlex show there this weekend will haunt me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course if I lose my job in two or three weeks, I'll be patting myself on the back for making the wise decision.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummm, haven't you just got back from Cologne or something?

(how was that, by the way?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

When I interviewed Mayer I tried to emotionally blackmail him into coming to Australia but he was having none of it. :-(

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in Cologne over X-mas, yeah (at the time my job seemed more secure.) It was incredible.

(x-post) Hahahaha I tried to get him to tell me when he was going to release an LP. He looked positively embarrassed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He vaguely hinted at the end of this year to me. He talked about an ep coming out first which in retrospect may have been "Privat" or may still be in the pipeline.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That's exactly what he said to me, too hahaha (I think "Privat" was the EP.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I get no benefit so maybe it ain't a plug. I'm goin' even though it actually might definitely be a hipster chin-strokin' affair. Oh well. I wouldn't know how to dance to it either, HA. A chance to hear this stuff other than on my dinty home speakers is a rockin' prospect.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

c-man, gratuitous shout! hope you'll let me know your impressions sooner than I've got back to you on Dizzee... did you catch the New York gang's (incl. me) write-ups on the original thread?
DIZZEE RASCAL COMING TO NYC AND... TORONTO!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo Paul. I'll keep ya' informed. C-man?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(short for cs appleby: sounds basic but I like it!)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM THERE. how will i recognize ilXoRs?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ummm, I'm short, nondescript. You can't miss me!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid, where do you live? have you been in sf this whole time?

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nope. i'm in san diego but i'm flyin up to see the show in SF.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i thought you were in LA.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be the jock looking guy most likely wearing a grey Fox cap...unless I decide to cut my hair. Vahid, Adam, Jason...maybe I'll bump into ya'. Paul should take a day off, spend a thousand bucks to fly hear from New York and hang out for a day. Hmmm.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 11 March 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the hipster contingent will be in full effect. the party is co-promoted by Compression, which started out doing really successful gimmicky drum'n'bass parties (ie wet t-shirt contests, locked-bathroom-and-everyone-drinks-free-til-someone-pees parties) which graduated to heavier and heavier guests (Grooverider, Goldie, Krust etc) until their recent NYE party which featured quite strangely Disco D, Z-Trip and Vikter Duplaix [yeah, i was like "huh" until i figured out that Hollywood Records is the thread here]. expect drunken trucker-hatted looky-loos.

on the other hand, the party is being co-promoted by Blasthaus, who did the recent Kompakt tour as well as the last three Warp tours and are doing Seiji at Milk on 3/19 [full disclosure: i'm on the bill]
so i think there will be lots of heads to round out the crowd.

if you're feeling the broken beats, come check out my night Safe on 3/20 where our guest is Domu (a ton of labels, london uk). email me for details.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 11 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, funny. i've never been to milk (went to galaxy a few times) but i'm going on the 19th for a birthday party

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 11 March 2004 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like i'll be seeing you there, then. i'll be the white guy behind the turntables anytime before midnight.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 11 March 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee is at the Mezzanine March 16th Weds. Lot's going on next week. I preety sure that's the right date. I'll double check it at Blasthaus.

turk (cs appleby), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i will let you know how it is this weekend. (though truth be told i'm not planning to spend much time in the rephlex room other than for soundmurderer.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY is DJ rephlex = aphex twin for sure?? or is this speculation?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know if anybody's going to get this before they leave but i'll be there ... jeans, silver adidas, military shirt, blue tshirt with "colors / noises / love" printed on the front. dark hair, glasses. say hi!!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 21 March 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

WELL...how was it????

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, for real!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Luomo was a DUD in L.A. I made my friend a best of Luomo disc at home before the show and was wondering how Luomo got a copy to put in his laptop and push play while looking like he was doing something (and I usually LIKE laptop shows).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, were you really at the luomo show? did you ever go downstairs?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I was really there in the flesh. I looked for yous everywhere!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you shaved or something?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up splitting way way early (so no Soundmurderer at all and only about half of the Plastikman DJ set, I am guessing) but I can say that everything up until the point I left sucked other than Plastikman which was 1) great and 2) the only danceable thing played up to that point (hmmph!) The whole Tigerbeat6 crew was pretty dull biz (someone--the ghettotech guy, I think, and not the gabba guy--closed their set with the tamest remix of "Bellydancer" imaginable.) The Rephlex DJ was wretched (couldn't mix worth a damn and who the fuck can dance to Autechre rip-offs anyway) but he did play the new Bug single which sounded great (some totally unknown to me female dee-jay on it) and Black Devil Disco Club. Anyway Bogdan whatever his name was next (why the fuck couldn't they have closed with this guy--he's sampling or mimicing Soothing Sounds For Baby and I could just leave and go home and mix Raymond Scott into my memories of his lame Aphex Twin/Squarepusher knockoff tunes and then fall asleep.) Anyway I have nothing nice to say about him. Then Plasticman comes on and me and Jen leave because it's actually good (don't ask) and that's the end of my night at the Rave of the Year.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

X-post

ok. first few hours were all skittery drill drums, 200 bpm gonzo-gabba, kitsch, "terrorized" versions of ginuwine and kardinall offishall, NES infantilism, etc. wasn't really feeling it. i think bogdan was treated as the 'headline act' as it were.

the plasticman/markone segment finally started around 1 and wasn't as larger-than-life revelatory as i'd hoped for but still really fun. i think it got the biggest crowd reactions in terms of exciting the way people move (i believe it was a darqwan track [!] that set people off). of course there were only a few clusters of people dancing while everybody else stood around.

as for soundmurderer, well... we got about 30-40 minutes of his signature breaks jungle which was - amidst all the rephlex/tb6 chaos - the only thing that was both quite challenging and pleasurable to dance/attemptdancing to. sorta like grasping a quivering thread trying to find a pattern in the bass and snares to move with, but the tension is what made it (vs. a discernable groove appearing only to be laptop-fucked away). after about half an hour he switched full on to 4-on-the-floor booty music which the sparse remains of the crowd enjoyed, maybe til the end of the night. i left around 3 while it was still going on.

no candy kids showing up for "the biggest rave" but there were a couple of people in rabbit suits and i took a leak next to a wolfman.

scissors (Honda), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

don't worry, alex! soundmurderer played for about thirty seconds, then someone else came on and started mixing back-to-back dj funk and dj assault and sped-up house anthems. there was a version of "new jersey deep" with a 130 bpm kick drum that was pretty hot. of course i was thrilled at these developments but at that time it was 3:15 am and my girlfriend had completely tired herself out trying to dance to bogdan raczynski (WACK) and i was completely stiff just from being in a murderous rage at the suckitude of the whole affair.

plasticman's set was really really short, too. in fact philip s had to tell me that soundmurderer had played, i couldn't tell who was who at all. the rephlex dj started his set with some dubstep, so at first i thought HE was plasticman. i thought the soundmurderer set was just some interstital tracks some guy was throwing on it went by so quick. oh, and he played some aphex and squarepusher, too, further confusing the matter.

and i'm pissed i didn't get to say hi to anybody!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OH that was soundmurderer playing the booty house???

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it was him. unless he traded places with somebody who looks a lot like him while i wasn't looking.

scissors (Honda), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha so basically it was awful, folks. If you didn't show up, you didn't miss nothing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

i was up by the bar on the left but couldn't see shit because of the way they had backlit the djs. i hate the layout of club six.

where were you dancing/standing??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Me and Jen were up front by the left speaker.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i danced through plasticman and soundmurderer up around the front. the rest of the time my friend and i just sat around sipping drinks wondering when it'd get better.

scissors (Honda), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So what else is happening? ;)

Antmusic78 (Antmusic78), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

instead of the soundmurder thing, i went to my friend's bday party at milk where seiji was playing. by the end of the evening, i was so fucking drunk, i had no clue what music was playing.

i introduced myself to who i thought was heywood jablomi (white dude djing before 12) but he didn't know what the fuck i was talking about. maybe it was him and i was just too drunk to understand?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you just didn't drunkenly shout that name at some random dude.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I hope you DID!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(Unless he tried to beat you up. Then I will regret that you did.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't just scream his name. there were hand and mouth gestures included

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooh did you play charades?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

wow it sounds like SF got dicked up the ass!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

in the mouth! in the mouth!

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha well you fuX0rs got Kompakt and we got the ass end of Tigerbeat6 (not DJ /rupture or the Bug, NO!, shit like com.a or whatever.) Next time looming unemployment be damned, I'm flying to NYC.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

if anything plasticman/mark one played too LONG in nyc.

i'm still not 100% convinced the soundmurderer set wasn't pre-recorded. i didnt even see anyone operating any equipment during it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha I kept on trying to remember which totally unremarkable looking white guy was Soundmurderer during the preceding awful sets ("it's that guy. . . no wait it's him. . . okay it's him") I could totally see him popping "My Awesome Ragga Jungle Mix" tape into a deck and then sitting back and relaxing for the rest of the time.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha okay SF people did he play two songs off the album and a mix of shy fx's "who run tings?"? because if he did he's conning us all.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

on the positive side, he did play "stamina" by the dream team!!

and dj rephlex records played the "aphex acid edit" of "windowlicker" back-to-back with the aphex remix of 808 state's "flow coma", which is totally obvious because they're sequenced that way on "26 mixes for cash" but it was a pretty killer five minutes nonetheless.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

also i ordered two seven dollar red-bull-and-cokes, the bartenderess totally knocked one off the counter ballistic-missile-style all over my shirt, and then ONLY COMPED ONE OF THEM!!

fucking club six.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

alex i think i was standing a few feet to the right of you guys for most of the evening ... you weren't the couple actually physically leaning on the speaker for most of the early sets, were you??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

haha say yes, please

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha we WERE!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a beautiful relationship right there

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody shook my hand and said something inaudible to me while dancing. that wasn't any of you was it?

scissors (Honda), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm amused that we were so distinctively bored looking in a room full of bored people.

(xp)Nope. I didn't see ILM that day so I didn't know what anyone looked like.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think some people here got a few Dj's mixed up. Mochipet was the japanese guy playing things I would imagine T.Ramshiere playing. He even wore a trucker cap and cheap looking t-shirt. I thought Grant (Dj Rephlex) played a fine set and didn't think his mixing sucked. He did play the obvious Rephlex canon though (AFX acid edits, Cylob..). Methinks it made for some fun acid-electro. AND AND AND....MarkOne was FANTASTIC. That was definitely my HIGH POINT. I am so relieved. The ILM nay-sayers have been disproved. Some of you started to give me doubts.

The low points were having a one square foot sweet spot. I stood near the DJ area the most. The DJ monitors were consistent. That space is not set up right. Soundmurderer became the vibe-murderer that night. I WISH he only played a half hour. Maybe only because I was so intent on listening to Plasticman's full set. I felt bad asking Chris (Plasticman) when Soundmurderer would be over. Paul...he did play Terror Danja. nice. Well... it sounded just like it.

I couldn't stay. My best friend AO needed to leave in a bad way. Plus the asses couldn't wait to pack up the equipment.

Okay..I left out a bunch of mean sentences.

cRaiG (craig!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be back for the pseudo grime contingent. ABSOLUTELY.

cRaiG (craig!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Strongo...They didn't play enough in SF.

cRaiG (craig!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi I just stumbled across this page on a search in google about the forthcoming Rephlex release from myself, Mark One and Slaughter Mob.

I just wanted to say thankyou all for turning up in San Fran and LA, and if any of you made it to any other shows - again, respect goes out to you guys for making my first Rephlex tour a very memorable one !

Those guys who waited til the end @ the San Francisco event, I'm really sorry that my set was cut short ! I think I'm as pissed about that as you guys are. I waited til 3:15 for the set which only lasted 20 mins - I think the fact the club shut the bar early had a major effect on the stamina in the rave !

Mark One played a whole hour on his own earlier on in the night and he represented really well ! I was really looking forward to getting on the decks toward the end, but sadly had a feeling toward the end of the Soundmurderer set that my night was going to end early !!

I'm sure I'll play San Fran again one day - It seemed on the night that the audience really enjoyed the "grimy" parts of the event, and on the whole tour aswell - it seemed pretty well recieved.

To make up for the shortlived set in SF, I will be putting a mix online for all to download and share - I'll be sure to post the link on this page for anyone interested.

Feel free to drop me an email for any info on releases or audio online.

Once again, Thank You ALL !!
