Your favorite bands that existed only in cartoon/puppet form:

1) The Way-Outs. This from the Flintstones, it was a parody of the British Invasion. I think they came from Mars. Snappy tune: "We're going way out (way out)/ cuz that's where the fun is (way out)"

2) The River Bottom Nightmare Band (was this from Fraggle Rock?) "We hate what we don't understand/ River Bottom Nightmare Band"

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

River Bottom Nightmare Band A) weren't cartoons! they were muppets, and B) were from Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Flintstonewise, it's a tossup for me between the Way-Outs and that group that played "Bug Music" (he said yeah, yeah, yeah/she said yeah, yeah, yeah/We said yeah, yeah, yeah/AAAAAHHHH!")

But I really have to give it up for Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem. Animal's the drummer!!

mike a, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jem & The Holograms, obviously.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Puppetmastaz!

- and the goth-ish, Tom Waits-y trio that acts as background musicians throughout 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.

Do the pooh sticks count?

Only to ten, Mudhead!

Best toon band? The Archies, of course. "Sugar Sugar" is eternal, "Jingle Jangle" is close behind, when it comes to tambourine, nobody's better than Betty!

Honourable mention: the Beau Brummelstones

not to mention the impossibly catchy "bang shang-a-lang."

As far as the flintstones go, I liked the Beau Brummelstones. Also a big fan of the Alvin and the Chipmunks cover of "Puttin' on the Ritz"

They WEREN'T cartoons,BUT... The Mosquitos;Bingo, Bango, Bongo, and Fred, were the best TV band ever.
The Archies own this thread, though.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Prozzak.

The Northern Pikes

That's what came to my mind, too.

abegrand, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Far out in front is Elwy and the Tree Weasels. ("Watch me twitch, hey!")

Distant second is Stinky Wizzleteats. ("If'n you ain't the grand-daddy of all liars! The little critters of nature... They don't know that they're ugly! That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumblebee! I told you I'd shoot! But you didn't believe me! Why didn't you believe me?!")

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Homer's band the B sharpes from the simpsons deserve a mention. As do The Jackson five for the video for 'ABC' taken from their short lived cartoon series. Though I agree with the contention that The Archies own this thread, it would be foolhardy to ignore the guitarist in the opening credits to The Funky Fantom.

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Has a Banana Splits album ever been released? I haven't seen the programme in years but I remember the music in it as being a kinda soul-influenced bubblegummy K-K type thang - my False Memory tells me it was preety good.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

there was one banana splits LP, "we're the banana splits," which for the past several years has been intermittently available as part of a bootleg cd that combines the album with a bunch of extra banana splits tracks plus an album's worth of tracks from another tv group, the beagles. at least i'm pretty sure it's a bootleg. maybe there was a legitimate cd release way back when that's been copied by shady underground cartoon bootleggers. either way, if you like soul-influenced bubblegummy k-k things, you totally want it if you can find it. their psychedelia homage "i enjoy being a boy" is one of the greatest songs of the bubblegum era. there are lots of other goodies to be found here too.

Speedy, I believe the fourth Mosquito was not "Fred" but "Irving." Unless we're thinking of two separate groups...

Quite possibly. It has been years since I saw that Gilligan episode.
