Erland Oye's Dj Kicks

They're playing a lot of this on RadioActive lately. His voice his great, and the lyrics over the top of the very dancey music work superduperly. Especially like the Smiths lyrics over Royksopp's Poor Leno (Silicone Soul remix).

Well, I think it's damn choice anyway. It's caught me in a way most of the lyric-endowed Kompakt-y stuff I've listened to never quite did.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there was a thread about it recently

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

erlend oye - dj kicks

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

love that intro to rubicon!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i have even warmed to the avenue d track at this point

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is Erlend Oye anyway? Should I know this?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

him out of kings of convenience

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(aka indie mope boy who's somehow realigned himself with world global electronica network)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(like most of them these last few years ha ha)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Clever kid him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i like this a lot, though! it's so bubbly or something.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no, it's great.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ack, i did a searchy thing before posting to. must've had the despoilation filament set to the wrong gain.

damian_nz (damian_nz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

MOR/steely dan-house, like i said on the other thread.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i skip rubicon and 2d2f every single time

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

skipping rubicon is some sort of extreme mentalism

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

even I, notorious snob irt french house tomfoolery, came around eventually

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds neat. I'll listen to it whenever !k7 gets it online.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, crocket and tubbs!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

is all i am saying

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

CRACK-ER!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the Justus Kohncke track w/Oye's narration (?) = put on repeat great

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have any real problems with the track, only it's the longest on the mix, if i ain't mistaken (i might be), and i get bored!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i was in this park when i was in madrid and there was this little area around a pond where lots of families were sitting. there were all these guys in animal outfits, evenly spaced out on the gravel (about ten feet apart), and they were all holding up balloon animals which i guess they were offering to make/sell to the kids. i was listening to rubicon on my headphones as i walked through this strange little display and that is when i really started to love that track.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

slocki ft. erland oye - "madrid park"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a good park walking record

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I totally thought that slocki's little speech was ghostwritten by J.D. Salinger.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you need to add a "if you want to know the truth" and something about flits

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I guess it wasn't quite defensive enough.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm aware of how ridiculous that sounded but really it was funny and great!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh don't worry, I like Salinger and I thought it was cute.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

highfives?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want to know the truth, I just read that book. and it wasn't because I wanted to, but it just reminded me of D.B. so I did it. I'm always doing stuff like that, really, I am.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it reminded you of donut bitch?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i thought he was saying! i'm confused

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

we're all having an episode i think

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm seeing those guys in animal suits again!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

they told me to do a bad thing.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

leave the matress tag alone, slocki

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what to do now, laddie! BURN 'EM!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

alex. the erlend cd i bought when i saw you at amoeba is pretty good (save for a track or two). the prefuse song on there is really great. i can bring you a copy friday if you're interested

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 25 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to this today on my new headphones, walking around town. it was great, i was feeling really jaunty, there was a spring in my step, and i wanted to wink at everyone.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Has this thing been officially released yet? Didn't see it at FE.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

april 26th i think

hector (hector), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wouldn't even give this a cursory listen if it weren't for the fact that so many people whose opinion I value keep saying that it is good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

snØb

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How does one download an album like this? When I do individual MP3s the transitions never line up and it sounds like shit.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

not that i endorse burning pre-release stuff but it may be that your cd burning software is set to "burn track" mode ... you may want to change it to "burn disc at once" mode. some software also lets you set the pause time between tracks.

although sometimes its the cd ripper that puts the dead air into the mp3s themselves, and there's not really anything you can do about that except d/l a different set, i guess.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(my copy of oye's dj kicks has the same problem, in my case it had to do with the way the mp3s were ripped, i'm just going to buy a copy when it comes out i guess)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

actually .mp3 rips of mix discs will always have a tiny pause between tracks, sometimes more noticeable, sometimes less.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

why is that and how can we fix it, spencer?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you gotta go in with an mp3-editing program to fix it, unfortunately! it sucks

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Always do "disc at once", I think the problem is w/ how they're ripped. It seems like different computers have different ideas of exactly where tracks end. Even a tiny split-second stutter drives me nuts, unfortunately.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Look for this rip of it: Erlend_Oye-DJ_Kicks-(Promo_CD)-Proper-2004-MS

It is in bin/cue format as a big 88 meg file.

svend (svend), Thursday, 25 March 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems like this mix should end after Minizza: Winning A Battle, Losing The War.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i agree that's why i made a custom version with a larry levan track, a morgan geist remix of franz ferdinand and a ghostface killah track mixed on to the end. flows much better now.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm surprised people are saying this about the ending. with the exception of rubicon, morgan geists lullaby is the best track on here i think

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

its funny, i didnt recognise his singing on track 2 as being opus III's its a fine day at all at first. but really, he would have been better off just playing that track, as that track sounds like kompakt/superpitcher anyway?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 25 March 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
(the other thread's gone off at a tangent, so I guess I'll post thoughts here)

Better on paper than in reality, for me. I like the idea for this mix a great deal, but was kinda disappointed. You can't fault Øye's taste - the track selection is consistently good (that Phoenix track in particular is superb!). But his vocal additions... meh. He compensates for the lack of harmonic progression in most dance music by changing the melodies to avoid any risk of dischord. The result is monotony. I swear he sings everything in the same key and uses about 3 pitches in total. (I'm not surprised gareth didn't recognise 'It's A Fine Day', Øye might as well have just recited the lyrics.)

It's all rather too tasteful as well. Don't get me wrong - tasteful can be good. I listened to the first Groove Armada LP for the first time in years just beforehand, and was reminded how pleasant that is. But by the time I got to the end of the Øye mix, I was wishing I had some death metal to play.

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually think that this is one of the best things I've heard this year.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's fun. i wouldn't say the best.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course I don't like it as much as KOC.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Look for this rip of it: Erlend_Oye-DJ_Kicks-(Promo_CD)-Proper-2004-MS

That rip sucks. There's these little half-second gaps between the songs and you can't do anything about it.

I think I'm just going to actually go out and buy it. It's that good.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i find it pretty goddamn addictive

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That rip sucks. There's these little half-second gaps between the songs and you can't do anything about it.

I think I'm just going to actually go out and buy it. It's that good.

that will happen with ANY mix segue CD that is ripped. i just eyed this at the store though, $15.99. OUCH. i'll stick with my d/led version. thanks, ddb.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Man this bites, the Avenue D song is great but the man clashes about 6 different but not radically different styles together, it's all horribly out of sync, and it seems to keep beginning again after every couple of tracks.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked it a lot but i burn out on these sorts of mixes very quickly, and i'm almost afraid to go back.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the Avenue D song is an abomination

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the Avenue D song is great!

I am listening to this again now and enjoying it a little more. I think only cos I'm a pathetic sucker for basslines like the Royksopp remix.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out of touch and not afraid to admit it"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i listened to this on the walk to work this morning...still so good! the phoenix track may be one of the best songs i've ever heard.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

As soon as I stop buying too many 4CD box sets and reissues of Keith Hudson records I will buy this and the new Ghostface Killah.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the new ghostface is a hit with the west chester fratboys, lemme tell ya

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did they call you to tell you that?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no, they told me as i sold it to them

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"it's slammin, son"

"i hope you die of venereal disease"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They told you "they hope you die of a venereal disease."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

no that was my internal dialogue

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you put venereal diseases on the CDs as you slipped them in the bag?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

when they turned their head i misted it with the syph out of a spray bottle

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the westchester fratboys have been down with the ghost since day one, i don't doubt their enthusiasm.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus I think they already have syphillis.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no doubt

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

one can never be too careful though

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
it's been a long time since i listened to this.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Me too!

Jaymc was listening to it the other night though.

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

you should! i listened to a month ago and it's still really entertaining.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i think it's time for a revisit. maybe i should copy it for my friend who thinks he doesn't like any "electronic" music but i know he really does. i could see it being a good gateway drug...

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Medical Erlend Oye has been banned by the Supreme Court.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

My brother likes it and he refers to Four Tet as "dance music".

Yakuza Ghost Six (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

I love this record. Still gets played once a week in my house.

My roommate loves the 2D2F song, so even the misses go over as big hits around here.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I really like his Unrest album, it called to me from the shelf from the public library despite my dislike for the stupid kings of convenience, the last song is a killer. Its like The Faint have finally relaxed, and then turned into jelly. Anyone who attacks The Faint here is no friend of mine!!!

I know, right?, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)
