Raunchy Young Lepers -- classic or dud, search or destroy?

Let's get down to something *really* alternative. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, obviously. DJ Assault at his most frenziedly masturbatory is the only performer I know to come close to the sex stuff, and the violent rock stuff is like Eminem joining the Shaggs. (Actually, faking up a tape of the most offensive RYL songs and sending it to news outlets pretending to be a concerned parent whose Em-lovin' offspring made it....could be fun)

That said I never listen to them. Which is probably the point.

Search: ooh, tough. It still has to be "Darkness", or as my tape says "Darkness (edit)", which is mindboggling in its implications.

Destroy: my life would be better for not having heard "Grade School Sex Queen", it being the only RYL track I can remember the 'tune' of.

Tom, Wednesday, 14 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Total dud. Yuk! Actually I still accept the existence of the Raunchy Young Lepers and I'm in the process of compiling a "greatest hits" compilation as we speak, as well as putting together the final touches on the box set, lovingly entitled _Simon & Garfunkel Shoot Up Salt Through Their Wangs_. Any input on songs that must make the cut would be welcome. ( http://tapemountain.tripod.com/ for more details.)

Search: "This is not a song about rainbows"; "Grim Reaper"; "Anal Scabs (Don't wanna pick it)"; "The struggle for minds and power", at least for today.

Destroy: any song where 28086 sings; "I am a cowboy", oh lord, where to begin, it's like that Alfred Bester story "Adam and No Eve" where the entire planet is turned into ashes. Or it should be.

So, the greatest hits is currently in the works. Watch out, world. Someone's about to unload a megaton o' methane.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all good, it is. Speaking of which, I know at least two ILXers ordered the overall PACKAGE recently. What did they think?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had it for many months now, and I've only managed to listen to about half of it... Partially because I got distracted halfway through, partially because I somewhat want to save the rest (although having heard samples of RYL side projects, wow, there is no end to the madness). I think perhaps I will try to work my way through it again over December -- the office will be mostly empty then, and it will make *terrific* office listening...

That said, absolute and utter classic, a Shaggs for my generation, except with more typical sociopathic tendencies.

Search: The entire "Sex" album, "I Love You For Your Mounds", "Longtime Lesbians", and any track where Dr Pain goes off like a foul-mouthed hummingbird, and probably also the album with all the 30-second songs (but I've only listened to a few tracks off it).

Destroy: That "greatest hits medley" -- oh, no, wait, that's where the "Why play cribbage when your wife has tittage" line comes from. Ach! There are few bands where the boring parts seem as important to listen to than RYL.

Jake, in his online diary, refrained from going into specifics about a recent impromptu Celesteville set that included an impromptu RYL medley. So I won't go into the sordid details here. But e-mail me (or, I guess, Jake) if you want to know.

But. So what do other people think?

All right, time to revive. For all you bums out there who have for whatever reason not yet given into the glory, there is now a full new 'greatest hits' collection out on Tape Mountain, Virgin Sleaze Propaganda. You can place an order for it right here, and as you can all afford it easy, buy now, DAMMIT. $2 for more great wrongness and wrong greatness than you can ever imagine -- and as the page says, first run has genuine New Kids on the Block stickers as an inducement! Nicole will forever be jealous of mine, as it features a picture of Danny Wood cut down the middle, so you see half a smile and an eye rather than his whole face, the words "Raunchy Young Lepers" typed in red ink lurking just off his shoulder. It is pure art.

(And for no good reason, some of the findings in google that you find when running a search on RYL:

Actually, considering this link was about the modern New Kids equivalent, might as well post it...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My copy has -- I think it's Jordan? -- he's wearing a button-down shirt and he's got the top button buttoned. Apparently that was one of the NKOTB's "schtick" -- per my bandmate, anyways, who would know. Anyway, 43 songs of pure mindboggling teenaged hormonal fury. Blast it at work, see if you get fired.

A year later and a mention on another thread means it's time to revive.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god. the most frightening indictment of childhood EVER. I was trying to describe them to a friend a while ago, and I couldn't remember the name. I kept hemming and hawing, "Raspy Young Leopards? Rainy Yonder Leotards? Random Yobs Leaping?"

There can never be enough revivals, not least because of this exchange and the fact that Momus now knows at least two of their songs.

I have now not only met Dr. Pain and the Goat-Boy, in addition to my longstanding friendship with 28086, but I've actually seen THE GARAGE. And recorded in it! On THE BOOMBOX! I was a pilgrim who completed the hajj.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And now I've seen everything -- a Polish-language page about them.

It's been a year since this thread last had anything on it, so I figured I'd revive. Haven't bought the box yet but when I get enough money (which means whenever less than half of my paycheck will be immediately depleted) I definitaly will.

I IS THE JOCK AND U IS THE HOMEBOY

(oh my god, I'm losing it.. I'm listening to selections from the Simon & Garfunkel Shoot Up Salt Through Their Wangs! set..

"They were a little TOO young for sex ed, but they knew what they were doing when they WENT TO BED! Grade school sex queen, pregnant at thirteen, she took what he could give her, and now she's GONNA DEEEEEELIIIIIIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR, YES!"... I really should be committed now.)

donut e-goon (donut), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Committed with the force of love. They truly are one of the greatest bands ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)
