What are your parents favorite records?

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Carole King's "Tapestry"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

she loves that one, too.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the only white person my mother likes is joni mitchell. (though, like seemingly every woman who was between 15-25 in the 70s, she owns a copy of tapestry as well, though i never remember her playing it.) otherwise it's motown, sly stone, disco, prince, funkadelic, teena marie, anita baker, luther vandross, earth wind & fire, jill scott, angie stone, etc etc.

her favortie records last year were erykah badu and r. kelly.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My mum actually really likes anything with a Bollywood flavour.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And my dad likes "Tobacco Road" and the classical canon.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And The Tindersticks, seemingly.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And even though this isn't part of the question, my younger brother likes 2 Many DJs, twee indiepop, anything Swedish, and random alt country (now that he kind of "manages" an alt country band). Oh, and British Sea Power.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sorry.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother likes Marillion

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

*cries*

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

now that he kind of "manages" an alt country band

Disown him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

my mum's favourite is for the roses.

I'm not sure what my dad's is. maybe can't buy a thrill.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Mother: Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of life
Father:....I Don't Think He Even Listens to Music

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Disown him.

!

For ages, I though this said "drown him".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dad - Blonde on Blonde
Mom - Moondance (though her favorite Rolling Stones is Some Girls)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think either of my parents have a "favorite record." My mom's might be Hotel California, if anything. She at one point owned hundreds of records (all of which are mine now) but she never had the kind of relationship with music where she needed to have a totemistic favorite. Dad I'm even less certain about -- I haven't witnessed him playing a record for anything but ambience in decades.

In related news, me and my mom are going to see Willie Nelson this June 19th in Westhampton, New York, which is waaaay out on Long Island.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be horrified if either of my parents had a favorite Rolling Stones record. RS are so NOT THEM.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mom: probably Billy Joel's Greatest Hits of the Cats soundtrack;

Dad: Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits (and Some that Will Be) & Bob Marley's Legend always seem to be in the car changer when I go home.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My Mother and I Were in the car one day Listening to the radio
"Wild Horses" Came on and she started to sing it So I Said I Didn't know you Like The Rolling Stones And She Said "This is The Rolling Stones?"

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about parents' favorite Rolling Stones records and that would be a toughie.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Joel's Greatest Hits of the Cats soundtrack

who wouldn't have this as their favourite record?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Until the last couple of years when they both got in-dash CD players, I don't think either one owned more than a half-dozen CDs.

Phil Collins is the only thing I remember my mother listening to when I was growing up. Her favorite bands right now are Creed and Coldplay (and var. bands like them, Three Doors Down, Travis, etc.).

My dad has generic middle-aged white guy tastes - classic rock, bad '60s electrics blues, smooth jazz. He finally stopped trying to make fun of my tastes in music when I gave him some Lucinda Williams and Kasey Chambers CDs.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 29 March 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother likes Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and Sir Cliff. I think the Rolling Stones are still perceived as a bit racey. I don't think I've played a record in her presence since 1980.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Monday, 29 March 2004 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad is soooo not cool.

I don't think my mom ever liked anything by the Rolling Stones.
