CD recommendations - any late '03/early '04 must-haves?

To rein in my music buying ways I've tried to scale back my "new" (ie retail vs. eBay/Half) purchases to just three discs every three months.

Aside from the Trapez disc mixed by Triple R heading up my list - any suggestions?

Hip-hop/rock/electronic/dance need apply.

The more melancholy the better.

With Three Months Down, My Favorite Records of the Year So Far

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I should've named this thread a (relative) ILM consenus Top Three (with 3 mos. down)?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

a bit early for even a relative consensus

one or t'other of the Arthur Russell CDs might just scrape a majority vote tho'

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM's Metacritic-equivalent is never there when you need it.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur Russell, Liars and TV on the Radio. I'm always much more indie toward the beginning of the year, I don't know why. Kanye deserves a mention too, but I haven't listened to it that much because like a rockist dipshit I always want to listen to the whole "album" but I never have time.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But seriously, just buy The World of Arthur Russell

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and the kanye west album

2 must haves in the melancholy/dance arena:

CiM - do not multiply models clips here: http://www.ann-aimee.net/ this is my favorite album of the past few months.

dj angel molina - pasada professional, techno from argentina immaculately mixed by a dj from spain. like a deeper and weirder cousin to friends. beguiling and unique. this has been slept on by ilm unfortunately.

the triple r trapez mix is good, but a. it should be a double cd, and b. i wouldn't have picked those tracks necessarily...(that's coming from a huge fan of the label perspective, too)

tricky disco (disco stu), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tricky Disco, why do you torment me so?

I recognized a few of CiM's samples [and like them and their ilk very much], but why's it gotta be so M83-expensive (e.g. at Other Music it's $20.99 USD)? The Molina also sounds awfully tempting, particularly as Friends remains my all-time favorite Kompakt disc (and honestly one of my Top 5 all-time favorite mix discs).

But I'm curious how the Triple R Selection 2 compares to Friends - just not as good? Just different? Or is it that Trapez simply has better tracks more worthy of CD release & distribution?

nader (nader), Thursday, 1 April 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i think the CiM is so expensive because ann aimee is an obscure label out of the netherlands with the distribution channels that come along with it. it's worth the cash though. the lp is actually a collection of 2(?) eps so if you buy vinyl you could try and hunt those down. if i actually had the time, i would write some worthy praise other than just random gushing, but really it's that good.

selection 2 is just way different than friends. all of the cuts on selection 2 are trapez cuts so the record pool was a lot more limited, and the motivation behind the mix is different. it's also geared way more towards a peak hour dancefloor whereas friends is more versatile with regards to listening environment. one of these days i will do my own trapez mix.

one other recommendation i would make is the new clouddead album...

Oxia-24 Heures.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

how's the oxia, ronan?

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

tricky d OTM - CiM's "do not multiply..." IS the best thing i've heard this year (or last year, anyway).

the alex cortex album on ann aimee is also quite pretty but much sketchier and more fragmented. kind of a difficult listen, because tracks don't really develop.

both albums are boards of canada for droids.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's good, very much in the same vein as the usual Goodlife stuff but the non dancefloor tracks are fairly ace swirly cinema-electro stuff. There are at least 2 absolute belters on it aswell, Reflexion, and Hasard Part 2.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

are there tracks as good as his hacker remix from a few years ago? (fadin away) or better yet la rock?

completely agree, vahid. the CiM album is also my favorite, i listen to it constantly...

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all closer to Garnier type stuff than Vitalic, very melodic and epic.

I prefer Vitalic's Fadin' Away remix myself. Did you hear DJ Tonio/David Carretta-My Telephone Is Dead from last year? That's one of my favourite "sounds like Vitalic" tracks.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i haven't heard that. i'll have to check it out. david carretta is quite reliable for those discoid arpeggiated bangers.

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest though, that gigolo/goodlife style wore thin on me pretty quick...melodic and epic are generally good adjectives though!

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it interesting still, I'd like to hear some decent sets of it out.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick of being sick of waiting for Vitalic to release more stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'd like to hear it mixed live as well. most of the records have that big room sound. i heard vitalic's album was going to be all led zeppelin covers.

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes he's formed a supergroup with Billy Corgan and Flea.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey can someone tell me more about this DJ Angel Molina mix? Allmusic.com has let me down.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, I'll certainly tell you more once it arrives!

Thanks to everyone (particularly TD) and their suggestions. CiM, Triple R, and Pasada Professional are scheduled to ship to my home any day now...(as I also wait for Espers and Calla's Televise - gots to rockit sometimes, you know?).

In the queue: Arthur Russell, Kanye West, and TV on the Radio.

nader (nader), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I love that Espers album! And of course Kanye is great. I really can't get into TV on the Radio though... For whatever reason they just don't do it for me.

My favorites of the year so far are Susanna and the Magical Orchestra's List of Lights and Buoys, Frederico Aubelle's Hotel Buenos Aires, and All Night Radio's Spirit Stereo Frequency.

nperich (drpenguin5), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nader, i hope you like what you ordered!

i was just listening to "pasada professional" this morning. tim, i'd imagine you could write plenty about it. it's my favorite commercially released techno mix in ages...it is all deep and clicky, fuzzed out, moody, and cerebral, but it also grooves. the records all hang together in just the right way. and i hate making comments like the previous sentence, but if you are a fan of dj-ing, the ambiguity should make sense.

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the things that make the mix so great is the unique style of mixing. there's very little obvious beatmatching and everything is very subtle. it's seamless, but more so in mood and feeling than in rhythm.

here's what other music had to say about it

tricky disco (disco stu), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hearing this now, it's really interesting.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
I've finally got me some "Pasada Profesional" (note: one "s" per its proper spelling for those of you on the need more microhouse quest) and though I'm wholly swamped at work right now I feel obligated to agree: It deserves its own thread (and not only for its gray/grey day utility).

nader (nader), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
you need the lucky & easy lp "talent hoover", nader. for the last 29 minutes.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 10 June 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

melancholy? Superpitcher - Here Comes Love [we don't need people/to be alone]

willem (willem), Thursday, 10 June 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Diggin' on the CiM right now - Lucky & Easy, who dat?

nader (nader), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh, they're more of the Ann Aimee lot. Only one $20 disc at a time (and preview it elsewhere in the meantime?).

nader (nader), Friday, 11 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, i can't wait to hear that lucky & easy lp.

tricky disco, Friday, 11 June 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't sleep: Thomas Brinkman's Tour de Traum is awfully nice, awfully inventive.

nader (nader), Friday, 11 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Brinkmann

nader (nader), Friday, 11 June 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)
