because I don't have one. Don't have any records to speak of either. But I feel like I should. Don't you think?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 3 May 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yougo in a seccond hand shop and there are tons of LPs that you think look good but will never be released on disc (what if someone dumped their entire Hasil Atkins collection) Then you sould have a turntable.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 3 May 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wait til that happens, then pick up a turntable on the way home

Getting a record player is a great way to accumulate way too many overpriced, out of print gatefolds to impress your friends and way too many $1 garage sale wonders (Black Uhuru, Gene Loves Jezebel, unplayable Troogs or dancehall 12"s have made their way into my collection this way). It's a slippery slope. If you do get it, you should be aware of this. Also, everytime I move I dump like 20% of my collection only to repopulate it by the time of the next move. Invariably, I ask myself, "Why do I have all these records?"

frankE (frankE), Monday, 3 May 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T get into vinyl.

Enough people already routinely beat me to the cooler new arrivals at the thrift stores. I don't need more people in the pool.

Stick to CDs. You, like, don't have to listen to pops and crackles. And you don't have to flip them over. That's what pro-CD people always say, right?

Slave of Eric Neis, Monday, 3 May 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

get an 8-track player instead!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 May 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No no, one of them things that plays it in a cylinder with holes in!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 May 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

No a CD player!

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 May 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about all those 70s Jimmy Cliff records they never put out on CD? How ya gonna listen to them without a turntable!?!?!?

John 2, Monday, 3 May 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Old Avant garde LPs going round for 50 quid is what this country's built on!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's why : 100 albums that sound better on vinyl..

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck that shit. Reel to reel is the next in thing, huzzah.

uh (eetface), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely recommend it. I've accumulated a huge number of records for next to nothing, rarely paying more than a few dollars for a single item. And yes, there are things that are much easier to come by on vinyl.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

when I got my current stereo system in 98, it just happened to come with a turntable.

The cool thing is being able to buy albums cheaply at garage sales on vinyl and play them. or play my dads Evita original concept recording on vinyl

uh (eetface), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

cheap records are fun. Things I've got in my collection that were less than $5 when I purchased them:

Gang of Four "Entertainment" ($1!)
Ravi Shankar "Shankar Family and Friends" (free! on George Harrison's Dark Horse label!)
Biz Markie "Goin' Off" (free!)
a bunch of Belle and Sebastian, Beck, and White Stripes 45s
Funkadelic "Rocky Mountain Shakedown" (an amazing live bootleg from '76 never reissued on CD)

This is true. Now wait until you have to move it all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

SHHHHHH ... Ned, keep quiet about that. Let him learn about the weight of vinyl on his own.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Moving 3 times in 3 years made an mp3 fan outta me.

I still have a ton of vinyl...I am dreading moving it all again.

ddb, Monday, 3 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't dread moving my records half as much as I dreaded moving my books or (even worse) my old electric organ. Just put 'em in boxes, what's the big deal?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the big deal is that there are like 5,000 of them...and when you are poor (because you've bought 5,000 records) and having your friends move your shit, the bulk being records and they are bitching...it just sucks.

ddb, Monday, 3 May 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

5,000+?!? damn. I don't think I'm even much over 1,000 and I'm already running out of room in my apartment.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the #1 problem with vinyl -- where to fuck to put all those records?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)
