Anyone else enjoying this?*

I am. And he's right. It isn't funny.

*this question is only for people who have the capacity to enjoy comedy records that aren't funny

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MAN! He is riffing on fat ladies in the office and I can totally relate to being in an office with fat ladies! WATCH OUT JOHN MAYER

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Use the search function. Read the wisdom. Read more wisdom. Meet Chaki on Saturday. Fin.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, hates me.

If I was at home and was extremely lonely and all of my friends were dead, I might be tempted to post a picture of me and David Cross from our upcoming double album "WE'RE NOT FUNNY (OR LIKEABLE)."

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That comma is for emphasis, you dig?

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I dig. I repeat as well that you would have been contacted about the FAP if you had a valid e-mail address available. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

His stand-up isn't as strong as his sketch comedy, but damn! You guys don't like David Cross? ILX = dud.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM TOTALLY EMAILING YOU DUDE

(they cancelled my hotmail)

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

His stand-up isn't as strong as his sketch comedy

Urf. I've said it elsewhere, but Mr. Show is pretty damned underwhelming -- and since I think Odenkirk's done some good stuff elsewhere, I think I know the reason why it's underwhelming.

Dean: rock. Keep Saturday late afternoon/evening open, will tell you more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you are krazy ned. but you knew that already. wicked sceptor? marilyn monster? dickie crickets? "A Mouthful Of Sores"? Not funny? Uh uh. waaaaaay funny. and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That's mostly season four though, so there's no way Ned could know those skits without already having the LOVE.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

DICKIE CRICKETS!
JEEPERS CREEPERS: THE MUSICAL!

mr show = classic
david cross = dud

from the new york press list of people to loathe:

19
David Cross
Comedian

CALL IT HUMOR for slow hipsters: Cross is condescending, meandering, undisciplined and...not funny. His HBO comedy special opens with him screaming a lot and pretending to speak Italian. If only Andrew Dice Clay could have jumped out of the front row with two sets of brass knuckles. His new DVD, Let America Laugh, follows him cross-country as his smug brand of humor falls on deaf ears and loud mouths. He's literally cursed off the stage in Little Rock—a show he likens offstage to "babysitting retarded puppies." Apparently it never occurred to Cross that he got the cane not because they couldn't handle his acidic New York wit—er, he's from Georgia—but because even hicks have taste. To understand why Cross requires a beatdown, imagine Jeff Foxworthy working his more "down home" jokes at the Apollo

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Arrested Development is the best thing David Cross has ever been involved with by a million miles. Mr. Show is a distant second-best for him, then it's the stand-up, and the lowest low is that dvd that he did with Lance Bangs where he mostly just insults the people who come out to see his gigs and the people who work at the venues which allow him to perform.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

A comedian ... pretending?! GASP.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak and scott on fucking point.

please, everyone else, give us your list of 'funny' standup comics.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, wait, is david cross in interpol? that would explain the mass ilx hate.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Your collective lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(instigating "David Cross writes for Pitchfork" rumor just to bear witness to ILM nuclear holocaust of hate)

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really understand the Cross hate here. But I guess when something or someone is praised or becomes popular that you don't happen to like, empathize with, etc. people get pretty vicious. Especially on a forum like ILX where people can voice their opinions and easily find others that share then to join in. A pretty damn obvious observation, I know.

"Cross is condescending, meandering, undisciplined and...not funny."

The first three adjectives are qualities of his humor that I like (I don't agree that he isn't funny).

"mr show = classic
david cross = dud"

Well, I don't think Cross is dud, but you're right that he isn't the main reason that Mr. Show is funny. Bob Odenkirk has a lot more to do with that (though Cross was obviously integral to the show's humor and sensibility). Odenkirk is immensely more talented than Cross as a writer and performer, in my opinion.

But anyway:

"His stand-up isn't as strong as his sketch comedy, but damn! You guys don't like David Cross? ILX = dud."

Thank you, OTM (except for the ILX = dud part, which of course wasn't meant iterally).

odenkirk's work on ben stiller, however, is vastly overrated.

Cross apparently guest-produced on the Gorillaz album.

He also mixed the Strokes last album too.

odenkirk is doing beer commercials. and they're not even that funny.

He also mixed the Strokes last album too.

and played violin with king crimson 1972-74.

with the exception of Manson which may be the most bizarrely funny comedy sketch in the history of TV.

i just love how he brags about "only listening to good music" on this new one. what a stupid bitch.

what do you say you listen to? heinous bullshit?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

in the bitter dispute that divides the Mr. Show audience, i stand firmly in the Bob line.

Hah, I was thinking about that recently due to a reference in Bob Fingerman's Minimum Wage -- 'take Manson with you, he's underfoot today.' (Of course the whole sequence in MW is about the trap of being nothing but a series of references and I HAVE FALLEN FOR IT.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you say you listen to? heinous bullshit?

i dont brag about the music i listen to being better than anyone elses. he pretty much says anyone that listens to poprock is stupid.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, superchunk rules. im sorry if you people have a problem with it.

love, dave cross

i think the fat guy with curly hair was the foundation of the show and

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit you know the Brian guy whos always in Mr Show? he looks like a taller nerdier David Cross? he came in my store yesterday looking for Death Angel and Machine Head!!!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the tall guy is the funniest (herky jerky dancer, story of the story of everest)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Brian is huge into metal and such. I saw him do standup awhile back and his act consisted of him reading some thread from his website's message board where he argues with some guy about how Local H sucks ... post-for-post ... Surprisingly it was funny.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian kicks ass.

Was that the guy who said: I was in Italy, but I took a balloon up my ass to Amsterdam.

Yeah, John Ennis.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, that tall guy who does the herky-jerky dancing should have been banished to doing fucking stand-up on Conan or some shit.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you look at the herky jerky dancer and not laugh?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak, you're drunk....Jay Johnston is awesome!

ddb, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps I am, perhaps I'm not; I will concede that the hiker knocking over the thimble collection is literally the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life. However, in other sketches he is purely a malignant, rubber-faced ham.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well, that's what i referred to as the story of the story of everest

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm aware.
