My lord, the new Mum album is incredibly boring

Absolutely nothing happens, no good melodies, no interesting sounds. I can't recall a more meandering album -- no focus, just random fluttering and wibbling.

new mum album

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

they were playing this record in Fopp the week it came out and I have to confess I burst out laughing (and I will willingly defend the singer of Cranes to the death!)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, didn't notice the other thread.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's too quiet you're too young.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

someone came into my store looking for this yesterday. I guess I will have to travel back in time and tell him that ILM strictly does not approve of it.

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and he will look at you like you're an idiot. oddly enough.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I would too if someone was giving ILM endorsements to me

(ducks)

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"ILM? is that, like, a band?"

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, actually the guy was a customer who thought I was incredibly interested in hearing the history of the band and other bands he liked. Alright, I'll be nice, I usually like yapping about music with customers, cuz it beats acting like a salesman, but I was grumpy yesterday.

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

uh

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT? YOU GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? OUT WITH IT. OUT WITH IT. COME ON RJ, COME ON, WHATCHA GOT, WHATCHA GOT, YEA, I FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE, COME ON, SHOW ME WHATCHA GOT, COME ON, COME ON!

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

is your name really enoch?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, no.

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide if I like the way the vocals fit to the music or if I want to laugh out loud because they sound like they were recorded by a four year old girl.

deadjoe, Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a wonderful record. i love enoch soames. it sounds fantastic in the dark, very uneasy.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"random fluttering and wibbling"

LOL! Brilliant definition. I don't even need to hear it to know exactly what you mean...

grock, Thursday, 6 May 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't heard it either but the description sounds a lot like the last plaid album. The older I get the less I can tolerate wibbling.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

they were really good when i saw them live in st petersburg a while bakc. but maybe thats the girls are pretty cute. but no, it sounded good. it was like, that twee pastoral bollocks actually seemed, well, pretty good.

plaid: end them now!!!1

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm imagining something like a cuter Lali Puna...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so more Enoch Snow too but then Enoch and also fuck it, really, Enoch Snow and anyway Snow was Enoch

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"My lord, the new Mum album is incredibly boring"

What the fuck were you expecting?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Baaderoni OTM. The new Mum is so twee, it'll make you wanna go on a killing spree. Check my flow, ho.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, new Mum is absolutely nothing like Lali Puna.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Both groups should be set adrift on a raft in the North Sea without a compass or paddles.

byeerk (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I haven't heard the album... Most descriptions just made it sound like Lali Puna. How is it different then?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 7 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i really dislike the whole style of which this band is a part, it's like a cartoon of "ethereal"

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 May 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like it. I scrounged a promo copy a while ago and wasn't really that keen on it to begin with, and forgot about it for ages, but when I had another listen recently I was converted. It's less focused and darker than the last one, sure, but I found the songs had really stuck i my head when I saw them live a couple of weeks ago.

Incidently does anyone know the name of the weird bowed instrument the trumpet player sometimes plays?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 7 May 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like a cartoon of "ethereal"

That actually sounds kind of interesting, like a Pokemon Bible or something.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 7 May 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just pages after pages of square panels filled with blue skies and minor variations on white fluffy clouds

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 7 May 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there anyone who'll stick up for this? I rather like it, it makes me think of the album I wish Stina Nordenstam had made instead of Dynamite.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good. it is neither better nor worse than the other mum albums. it's certainly better than lali puna.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez, I feel so indie having the opposite opinion.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Mum is death by twee tedium--tweedium.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there anyone who'll stick up for this? I

Erm... I just did!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe someone bothered to make a thread w/this title. I mean, isn't being boring their JOB?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, and they deserve respect for doing it so well

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Their first album was good IMO, though I haven't listened to it in a while.
