Poison -- a thread for the lovers and the haters

Because apparently they didn't have a thread before about their entire career, though Dan's take on "Talk Dirty to Me" is exemplary and contains much wonder.

Anyway, I bring this up partially because of an interview that Metal Sludge has just done with Ric Browde, the Ross Robinson of his day (well, not really, that was Mutt Lange, and Browde fully agrees), who produced Look What the Cat Dragged In among other things. It's a freakin' great interview through and through about all sorts of glam-era and after stuff (Browde loves Turbonegro and is bored by the Darkness, so I like him already), and he has things to say like this:

--
2. You produced Poison?s ?Look What The Cat Dragged In.? What do you remember about recording that album? What comes to mind?

Recording Poison was interesting because I felt I was doing a great service to frustrated wannabe vocalists around the world by opening the singing profession up to those who were tone deaf and cannot sing , which had previously been barriers to aspiring singers.
--

But hey, I like 'em, and there for once Dan and I differ. So what do YOU think of these, the legends (here in smaller than legendary size)?

Mutt Lange is way more talented than Ross Robinson!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I agree -- I mean more in the sense of 'signature, inescapable sound of an era'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they are great...esp. on Look what the cat dragged in...

at that time, they are so resolutely bubblegum that I find it hard to people don't like them...no machoness to get in the way of all the pop hooks...also, I luv CC Deville as a lead player, much more tuneful and less wanky than lots of the era, and when he was wanky it had a certain "hey ma look what I can do!" gooniness that is infectious....like he didn't take it seriously enough to really think of it as anything more than making cool noises....and CC's voice! I mean best speaking voice ever! He sounds like some cigarrette inhaling, grizzled 50s New Yawk diner waitress! (and looks like one too!)

Also, I was in Jr. High at the time and have many fond memories of all the girls in my grade dancing to them at school dances. they were really good for that.....

All this said, they got worse and worse every album, more "serious" and less fun and they thought they were like a real band or something...with some exception like "every rose" and the gooooorgeous and melancholy springsteen thang "fallen angel" (which no one seems to like as much as I do)...

Search "Bret Michaels". I may have done a Poison thread involving Mel C some time ago.

Rikki Rocket is the man. As pointed out on another thread (on ILE i think), he took the whole pretty look on the front cover of Look What The Cat Dragged In and then took it one more step.

M@tt OTM.

I'll profess a liking for Def Leppard's Pyromania in this thread. And Skid Row. but that's it. Until I think of something else embarrassing later. Not that Skid Row is, cuz it's not.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing embarrassing about liking music.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, this guily pleasures thing has been discussed on some other threads...you can search them if you'd like.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That would involve me reading more threads. No, no, and no.

So in summation, um, Poison: no good.

Thank you for casting your votes.

Probably trying to be like the 500 bands a year who thank Abe Vigoda in their liner notes

Let me pull out the liner notes to the Lips' Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking ACID collection here...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, it's completely unintelligible to talk about the New York Dolls when someone brings up dressing in women's clothing! That's sooooooooooooooooooooo far off the mark.

By the way, in order to be completely unironic from now on, you might want to not call somebody unintelligible in a sentence where you use incorrect grammar: IT'S 'YOU'RE', YOU FUCKTARD!

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I initially thought Poison was an all girl rawk band and I was seriously bummed when I found out they were boys. But they still rocked.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They rocked harder than taffy.

uh, did it ever occur to you that db and myself may have actually have heard of the NY Dolls and listened to them and be quite aware of their influence on the look of glam rock and might just actually want to talk about Poison without some toolbox bothering us? Fucking find a NY Dolls thread if you want to talk about them....or fuck there's prob. even five threads on solo David Johansen by now if that's yr bag...

god, you have this way of making these completely banal and cliched observations and then acting like you're the first person on earth that's ever said it....

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Matt, you're a complete idiot. Yea, I REALLY thought I was dropping an obscure reference when I mentioned the New York Dolls on a site perpetuated with writers of Allmusicguide and fans of allmusicguide, who probably have given them enough coverage end over end.

You, like the other peons on this board, are really good at drawing inferences that aren't there and making stupid assumptions. But keep on, you're amusing me. :)

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Do not feed the asshabadasher.

x-post

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, no one was talking about "thanking" anybody in the context of the discussion and you were and are being completely annoying and insulting for seemingly no reason at all, hence the 'unintelligible' comment. Spelling mistakes are not unintelligible, since you obviously figured out that I meant "you're". I still can't figure out your thanking the Abe Vigoda/New York Dolls comment.

Seriously, uh, get off the crack.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If your definition of troll="someone who likes entirely different music than me", then by all means :)

It's easy to categorize and thus distance yourself from something, right? Well, carry on then, if your ignorance makes you feel better.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

right, because I was the one that told someone to "fuck off" first.

you idiot.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, please note the mods are collectively well aware of him and will likely be acting accordingly soon. DB, Matt, let it go. Uh is a boring, lying fool, no more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(it's hard to tell which troll is posting under which new anon alias these days... can someone clue me in offboard?)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, since you're dense, I'll break it down. I said the "Abe Vigoda" thing to reference the zillions of bands who thank random celebrities in their liner notes just to be funny, which was one possible motive a band could do something like that.

I mentioned the New York Dolls as an aside, since they did the whole sleaze-drag thing earlier than Poison did the whole OMG WE'RE WOMEN thing. But since you all take everything entirely too seriously here, I'll figure you missed that too.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just kinda sad to see this, that's all. I hope someone is about to get the help he/she/it deserves.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, acting accordingly, eh? Why don't you go and delete the account already, then, if it makes you happy? Cuz all I'm doing is responding to the silly elitist bullshit you and your ignorant peons spout forth.

fyi, this is the only nick I've used in the last four days other than "censored" to my knowledge.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, James Slone was right about this place. No wonder this board couldn't handle someone like him.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm lost.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, this is the typical behavior on elitist pop boards, is it not?

Bret Michaels was just on that "Yes Dear" shitty sitcom...i saw the rerun the other nite...the dudez get a chance to party with him, and the one nerdy guy (that doesn't wear the hat) feels like he's a square, but they Bret has a heart to heart with him on the balcony and say, hey man, i don't really like this rock n' roll lifestyle, lots of times i wish i was back at home with the kids, just like you.....makes the nerdy one feel good!

also wierd music thing on that show: the "slobby" one (wears baseball hat and lives in their carriage house and works as a security guard) wears a Son Volt shirt with amazing regularity!

I love Poison! The first live band I ever saw... and I remember they did indeed do a cover of "Rock and Roll All Night". I have to say, out of all the thousands of shows I've been to, the Poison one was really memorable, even though it's been nearly 20 years since I've seen them (now that is scary). But what's up with Bret M. always, always wearing a hat these days?

Rikki Rockett, drummer for US rock band Poison, has been arrested for rape in Los Angeles.

Rockett - real name Richard Ream - was held after a woman filed a complaint claiming she had been raped at a casino in Neshoba, Mississippi.

A police spokesperson said prosecutors were deciding whether the star would be sent back to Mississippi.

The 46-year-old musician, who was unavailable for comment, has been released from police custody.

The band, who are best known for releasing the song Talk Dirty to Me, was founded in the 1980s by Rockett and singer Bret Michaels.

Bogart Puff 'n Stuff (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 24 April 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

LOS ANGELES – Bret Michaels is in critical condition suffering from a brain hemorrhage, his publicist said Friday. Joann Mignano confirmed a report on People magazine's website Friday that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. The report said doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

Mignano said tests are being conducted and that no further information was available.

The 47-year-old reality TV star had an emergency appendectomy last week after complaining of stomach pains. He said on his website that though the surgery "has taken its toll," doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Michaels starred on the VH1 dating show "Rock of Love" and is a contestant on Donald Trump's NBC reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice."

Trump said in a statement Friday that he was "deeply saddened" to hear of Michaels' condition.

"He's a great competitor and champion, and I hope he will be fine," Trump said.
