OK, so we all do mixtapes/CDs. But if one of those offers came in to make the one and only 'generally available' defining CD mixes, what would you make of it?

It needs to be something you'd stand by totally for at least six months, and something you were still happy to be known by in perpetuity... 80 mins, all licensing sorted, lets rock (or not).

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

should it be themed or not?

God, that really is the most Nick Soutall compilation ever.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok.

No theme, just me.

Under the influence of Dog Latin:

CDR80 - What kinda stuff? Explain your taste in one CD

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to check the tracks "don't take ecstasy", "where is claire", "pancreas" and "the reefer song". but "fuck off" is definitely an ethereal entity unto itself.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Great idea. I got the Under the influence of: Morrissey, and it is very good, lots of obscure stuff (at least for me).

Of course i will make one real mixcd like that.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ: Well, it's the sort of stunning curtain opener I wanted, and is an instrumental too.

Elvis Is Dead: Don't miss 'A House is not a Home'; I had to have some Bacharach/David, and this is a fine version; lavish soul with hovering harps and strings. Would go nicely into the Smokey...

I've not heard all of them in this order, admittedly... but I gave a lot of thought to the ordering, and of course, know all the material well. Though the Hammill and Public Enemy ones are things I've heard fairly recently, but been sufficiently blown away by to include.
J.C. Clarke and Public Enemy could be quite an inventive contrast; Mancunian poetry to a beat, and New York rapping: both very bleak numbers.
Al Bowlly and Stanshall is quite a nice one, as VS is a rare 60s generation artist to be influenced by 20s/30s crooning, of which Bowlly is the *master*. "Couldn't Be Cuter" is the most smashing trad. jazz *song* I've ever heard; the vintage, ebullient band performance invests a very fine song with *so much more*, as does Bowlly's calm urbanity - stirred more than usual by the fiery band and jocular backing vocalists. "The Cracks Are Showing" is about the most economical use of 46 seconds I have heard.

Malcolm Clarke > Eno might just be very affecting too... Including some Radiophonic Workshop was a must, and this brief bit - for Dr Who - from 1972 makes a good bridge between Meek and Eno.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Just a few comments about people's comps:

Excellent mix, Roxymuzak. Rather reminds me I'd have liked Blur's 'To The End' in there, somewhere...

I like Nate's O Jays > Ghostface Killah; two great songs those, and I sense a fluid mix.

I imagine Tim Finney's being a fine overall sequence; Smiths and Sundays into Britney Spears is really *ILX* par excellence. ;) I was sad not to be able to include some pop hit of recent years, but priorities won out: i.e. more unusual and personal choices I wanted.

Nick Southall's; 'It's A Kid's World': what a rampaging ditty! And the other entry along with Malcolm Clarke that includes Dr Who music; in that case Peter Howell's version of the theme is sampled near the end.

Mark Grout's is nicely UK-centric. Is the Peel "Story of the Blues" even better than the record? And presumably including the spoke monologue? I myself was close to putting "Me, Myself and I" in, too.

Scott Seward's intrigues as I've barely heard *any* of those tracks, and it looks very wide-ranging genre-wise.

Overall; I'd love to hear some of these on CD...
Wherefore a 'Under the Influence of The Pinefox', also...? :) Or Robin C. or Momus, for example? Would be interesting to see plenty more of these.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, if someone played me that, I'd most likely get rather pissed off. There's nothing from last year, for starters, and last year was great. Also distinctly bereft of the Scissor Sisters and Dexys and Bearsuit for some reason.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Tom May: The peel session "Story of the blues" is more sixties-centric, and no It doesn't have the monologue, but it's still trez cool. A good portion of the first half comes from already existing mixtapes, and then to off the top of my head stuff. (That Wah track being one of them, I was like OMG WTF Where did that come from, great!) (Another mixtape for the Ivor Cutler into De la soul. It just works, it just does)

Anyhow, I love that this thread is simmerring along nicely. Nothing worse than '99 new answers' to put you off looking at any, it's definitely carrying on in the spirit it was intended for. Laters...)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

don't see the point of this at all, unless someone's paying me to do it. in which case i'd probably just do what all under the influence artists do, i.e. let sean rowley or whoever compile it and append my name to it without even looking through the track listing.

although that usually means at least ten tracks of dreary muscle shoalzzzz zzzzzzoul.....

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a shame actually, as I was just thinking "I wonder what would be on Marcello's" seeing as we're both on ILM at the same time. Admittedly, you have a point but then it's a wonderful fantasy world where we the people get to make our own CDs. Being the sad kind of fuck that I am, I spent every third September 10th compiling my top 40 songs of all time - hey, next one is due this year actually, hadn't thought of that - so my compilation wasn't that hard to think about, just ordering it into some semblance of running order.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't yet have a cd burner so am still stuck with compiling old-style mixtapes. my other half does have one but i'm banned from using it.

i do compile mixtapes for work but i never attach any thematic import to them; just throw together whatever i'm listening to at the time.

though in my present state any mix CD would probably comprise four 15-20 minute tracks.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

and they'd all be tempoless.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anyway, introducing

The NME liiiistening Cluuub. Want to hear some good music? Of course you do. And you can, too. Just make a mix CD or a tape of songs you like and post it to liistening cluuub at the normal NME address. In return you will receive a letter from us explaining exactly what is wrong with your selections and another reader's mix in return. Like a kind of cassette swap fun club. Exciting, huh? All mixes must be in by Sept 14th."

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds stupid - unless they pick something they think the sender would like to receive in reply.

a better way of doing this would be to allow people to post their tracklists on the NME website, and then other people can request an exchange that way - even including mp3 CDRs...the BPI would doubtless furrow their brow but it happens anyway.
