Four years ago, I never suspected that I'd ever love the Chameleons (UK)- in fact I used to make fun of friends' obsessions with the band. But in the last year or so I've really grown to love the band. I really dig the way they were able to use the post-punk guitar tones to create unusually uplifting, inspiring music- I see them as almost the antithesis of the proto-goth rock bands; they use a lot of the same techniques to create a radically different sound. I don't think the tag New Wave really applies.
I suspsect my newfound enthusiasm may be age related. As I approach the end of my 20s, the nostalgia soaked lyrics and relatively subtle compositions really call out to me. Anytime I'm in my mopey sad bastard mood, I know I can listen to the Chameleons for some uplift.
Whatever the case, they rock, and I was wrong about them for a long time.
