Do you even actually read Pitchfork?

I don't. At most I click on the review to see the rating. All the news is here before it's there. The ads are obnoxious as hell (terrible layout). Why bother?

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

why bother starting another pitchfork thread?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

pitchfork hating is tantamount to vice hating, hipster hating, and trucker hat hating.. ENOUGH

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

this is funny tho - currently on the front page of pitchfork

>> RETRACTION

Last Tuesday, June 15th, Pitchfork published a review of the Beastie Boys' To the 5 Boroughs by Brent DiCrescenzo, a frequent and trusted contributor. In his review, Brent detailed experiences with the Beastie Boys' public relations firm Nasty Little Man, and its president Steve Martin, over the course of several years. Pitchfork has since determined that a number of DiCrescenzo's assertions were false, based on corroborated statements from the two parties he claimed were participating in the chain of events referred to in the review. With apologies to Steve Martin and Nasty Little Man, we have retracted the original review in its entirety, and would like to make the following known publicly, to correct any and all falsities perpetrated by Brent's review:

1) Radiohead were never in Milan in June 1999.

2) Radiohead never moved a concert from Villa Reale in Milan to Monza in 1999, 2000 or otherwise.

3) Steve Martin never "forgot to tell" Brent that the concert was moved, as it was not.

4) Neither Steve Martin, nor anyone working for Nasty Little Man, ever confirmed a Radiohead interview with Brent DiCrescenzo or Pitchfork.

5) Brent DiCrescenzo's declaration that Steve Martin had not gotten back to him or Mean magazine about a possible Beastie Boys interview after six weeks is untrue: Martin was in constant contact with Mean publisher Kashy Khaledi and editor Andy Hunter throughout that period.

6) Mean magazine never "delayed their publication to accomodate [Martin's] procrastination." Kashy Khaledi did so of his own volition in order to keep the Beastie Boys cover story Martin had confirmed and saw through with him every step of the way.

7) Steve Martin has never, to Brent DiCrescenzo's knowledge, "dangled [his] major artists... like carrots to the media in an attempt to blackmail press for features" on less established artists or bands.

Sincerely,
Pitchfork Media

FOr all my Pitchfork posting re: that one silly review, I like the site, it gives me the heads up one some interesting music to check out. i.e. I read it for the William Basinski reviews, not the Flaming Lips reviews

PITCHFORK HATING HATING IS TANTAMOUNT TO VICE HATING HATING, HIPSTER HATING HATING, AND TRUCKER HAT HATING HATING... ENUFF. BTW WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS SO QUICK TO RESPOND TO ANY THREAD THAT MENTIONS PITCHFORK?

PITCHFORK LOVER, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i only read pitchfork when someone starts a pitchfork hatin'-on thread.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I skim it about once a week. Sometimes try to read an article but never usually make it all the way through. HOTTT Dleone kinda lost me yesterday with this:

"In some ways, no-wave's successors were merely continuing a long standing New York tradition of eclecticism and the post-modern in rock that had been initiated in the 60s by The Velvet Underground and influenced by composers La Monte Young, Tony Conrad and Terry Riley."

I think No-Wave (and its successors) had a lot less to do with the La Monte-side of things (if you discount his early word-music pieces in An Anthology...) and more to do with Fluxus and its progeny Performance Art. But hey, other than that, when it got to the music, the review was okay.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to go read it RIGHT NOW

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

dear anonymous dick:

i'm quick to respond to any stupid-ass thread, cause i'm bored at work.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the reviews/news of the bands/artists I'm interested in, just like any site.

I wouldn't call the layout "terrible", although it could be better.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

for news, pitchfork should switch to a team blog format - as there news is often days late and re-written in a stoopid jokey style.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

any site that's got interviews with Acid Mothers Temple, Animal Collective, Black Dice, Circulatory System, Kevin Drumm, Explosions in the Sky, Fennesz, Fugazi, Daniel Johnston, Liars, Matmos, Mission of Burma, Mountain Goats, Mouse on Mars, Need New Body, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Xiu Xiu, etc. has got SOMETHING good going on.
x-post-i agree

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I check in every day. There's usually at least one review and one piece of news that I'm interested in reading.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If you think this layout is bad, you should have seen it when it was various shades of blue- this one is at least easier on the eyes, although the constant blinking ads can be annoying (but no less annoying than the rest of the web's incessant blinking ads).

-- hstencil (hstenc!...), June 22nd, 2004.

I think he's talking about the music continuum that began with Lamont, to VU, to no wave, not saying No Wave was directly influenced by what VU was influenced by. Lamont just started a chain that made it acceptable to have many influences, which don't really have to include his music itself.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I think that's fair assesment. I just think it links No-Wave and minimalism a little too heavily, perhaps inadvertantly, altho there's always some overlap with this sorta thing. And I think it being a continuum is an important point. I'd love for somebody to someday write a comprehensive survey of L.E.S. art/music/whathaveyou.

But wasn't Young was a fluxus member (is that what you're referring to by his 'word-music' pieces)? Anyway, I'm not sure about how deeply into the whole thing he actually was.

Other than that I'm not sure what other things- beyong velvet underground and a few other primitive rock things- you could attach to no wave.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Young was Fluxus, initially, before Fluxus really was Fluxus. After Maciaunas really codified it into his movement, La Monte kinda dropped out.

beyond velvet underground and a few other primitive rock things- you could attach to no wave.

In a sense you could say that La Monte's Poem for Tables, Chairs, etc. sounds a lot like a lot of No-Wave, just in a different context perhaps.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

not that they're asking me to, or anything. it just seems like they are the place to go to for record reviews. i think i'm funny could totally do it.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't check Pitchfork out often, but when I have I've appreciated the news section more than the reviews. I've read some really over-the-top reviews on pf that just made my eyes roll. Pitchfork would be a much better site if it weren't so obvious that most egos there have ballooned past recognition.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I still read pitchfork's reviews most of the time (although I will echo the many many criticisms of the oftentimes confusing and self-indulgent writing)...but there's been lots of times I've been "hipped" to a new band (as the kids say) that I'd never heard of before from P-fork....I guess as a cornee fux-ola I do still find it useful, at least because - even if I don't really understand what the author is getting at - I can usually divine some kind of meaning or basic bands that the CD at hand is reminiscent of and put it in my mental "I should check this out" list...

Thank you, Andrew L.

I only read Pitchfork for amusement purposes, as it teaches me how to NOT write reviews and gives me something laugh at. Only on scarce occasions have I ever agreed with the bastards, ratings-wise. My mate Sophia and I relish in denouncing Chris Out and his reviews, too. Oops, I mean Ott, sorry.

By the way, has anyone seen Sub Pop's parody of Pitchfork? Actually, I don't know why I asked, I am sure of great portion of you have, but I must say...VICIOUS. Brilliantly vicious.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork is worth reading for me because of the daily news updates for a large portion of the bands and types of music I listen to. Some of the features and interviews can be fun and/or interesting to read as well.

The reviews are hit or miss. But when they miss, DAMN....
