Raining Blood

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmmmm....maybe for sheer brevity and purity of intent, "You Suffer" by Napalm Death.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Damage Inc.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck I shoulda said You Suffer.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Supernaut"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shedding Skin" by Pantera fuckin rocks.

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Balls to the Wall" and/or "Fast as a Shark" by Accept...if only for their sheer, unrelenting, unapologetic ridiculousity.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 July 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

on friday night at Ozzfest for about 8 minutes, it was Priest's "Painkiller". I was surprised too.

(Jon L), Friday, 23 July 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

god. either "fast as a shark" or something by judas priest.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Something by Queen, or Ace of Spades.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Master of Puppets"

subgenius (subgenius), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"BALLS TO THE WALL" SECONDED

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
or
Every Rose has its its thorn

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Motorhead - Killed By Death

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ace Of Spades" seconded.

Or, less predictably,
"Kingdom Come" (Sir Lord Baltimore)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"kingdom come" is really pre-metal. and that song absolutely blows the doors off of anything mentioned on this page so far.

"shining wizards bring the rain/shooting arrows at the sun" ahh, genius.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now it's "Destroy The Orcs" by 3 Inches Of Blood.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

anything by jethro tull

jedidiah (jedidiah), Friday, 23 July 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

My gut reaction as soon as I saw the title of the thread was something by Priest, but I can't choose a specific example.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The version of "War Pigs" that Sabbath opened with a week ago.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stone Cold Crazy"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

probably iron man

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart.
It starts with a motorbike and they go WOAH YEAH lots. It's the best.

Rockbitch, Friday, 23 July 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Symptom of the Universe

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I would go with Black Sabbath's "Fairies Wear Boots." If not that, then "Sweet Leaf." Those are pretty much the essence of what metal is supposed to do ... hit you in the nuts and fuck with you with all sorts of weird stuff thrown into the mix.

Chris O., Friday, 23 July 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Children of the Grave!!

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Symptom of the universe" or "Xanadu".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, Rush's "Xanadu?" Or Olivia Newton John's.

Getting creative with the idea of metal here, aren't we?

Chris O., Friday, 23 July 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Children of the Grave!!
-- Andrzej B. (ww_sketche...), July 23rd, 2004.

I'll second that.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Rush, of course!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Always been partial to the Rush song myself, especially that ridiculous drum part.

Chris O., Friday, 23 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Paranoid". A bit obvious, but it just is.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Saturday, 24 July 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wars of Armaggedon," Funkadelic. Or maybe "Miss Lucifer's Love," or "Maggot Brain" or "Cosmic Slop." Very probably "Funky Woman" by Parliament. "Matador" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs should be considered, as should Alice Cooper's "School's Out" and Heart's "Barracuda" and Love's "7 and 7 Is." But still voting for "Wars of Armaggedon" because it's got the best soloing and the best title and the best fart noise and the best apocalyptic riot noises and the best sentiments: "more power to the pussy! more pussy to the people!"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 24 July 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fast As A Shark" thirded. Or "Back in the Village" by Maiden.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

keeper of the seven keys

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Seconding "Paranoid."

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

More recent: "The Unknown Knows" by Voivod

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

revive because I had a vision of Chuck Eddy coming across this thread and looking up like the old Native American dude in the 1970s commercial about pollution, with one tear coursing its way down his cheek

and because no one mentioned "Purple Rain" or "Mama Said Knock You Out"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Matador" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs should be considered,

Ummm....pardon me but.....SAY WHAT??

"Matador" by LFC is a fucking FANTASTIC song, but there is absolutely NOTHING 'HEAVY METAL' ABOUT IT IN THE SLIGHTEST!.

I don't think there's even a guitar on it. It's simply drums, horns, whistles and vocals and maybe some background keybs. And it's not heavy. At all. It's great, but don't call it metal.

End of rant.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Rush ain't no metal. Rush ain't got no balls!

Judas Priest "Diamonds and Rust."

Seriously though, Dark Tranquility's "Punish My Heaven." Though Priest does rock.

James

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

AC/DC, "You Shook Me All Night Long"

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

My Priest choice would probably be The Helion/Electric Eye.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex I think that
you are a good guy but dude
metal /= guitars

if that was the case
Jeff Tweedy would be the big
metal dude this year

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

SUPPORT THE WAR!!!
WAR SUPPORT!!!

Slayer "War Ensemble"

tk, Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Anything by Carcass but if i had to choose 2 songs:

Inpropogation or The Sanguine Article. The songs that open and close the best heavy metal (ok, grindcore/death genre) album of all time: Carcass' 1991 album Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious.

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a best heavy metal album thread at ILM somewhere?

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be hard pressed to name the top track on Necroticism. Man, that albums fucking rips.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Heartworks is pretty good too.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark me down for Ace of Spades, with emphasis: Ace of FUCKING Spades! Fuckers!

briania (briania), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wheels of Confusion

earlnash, Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Slayer - Angel of death

Rudolf (Rudolf), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I'm kind of leaning towards either "symptom of the universe" or Sepultura's "troops of doom" to-day.

Rush = r0x0r, nevertheless, obv.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I know Necroticism as a whole just jumps right up there as the best death metal album I've ever heard. That first track Inpropogation is just ridiculous though (in a good way). I used to goto sleep to it on repeat which, looking back on it, is slightly odd.

Heartwork I appreciated (and should dig it out) but man, Necroticism, wow.

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I once read through the lyric sheet with a dictionary to hand to look up all the silly long words they used. Really!

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Rush - I'd go with Tom Sawyer, just love that song.

Sepultura - Desperate Cry

Someone said Voivod's Unknown Knows upthread which I'll second, and just thought of an ultimate fave:

Cenotaph by Bolt Thrower.

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Re dictionary - yeah tell me about it!

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to make a big list of favorite metal songs in certain aspects of the style[s] (best vocals, best thrashing etc, yay)
BUT! I won't!

So uhh.. I dunno. Random-pick sez:
Entombed - Sinners Bleed (or almost anything off Clandestine! Shame the band went right into the dumps after that album)

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And Left Hand Path too!

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Pentagram "Be Forwarned"

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Fishbone "Monkey Dick"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
"Holy Wars/The Punishment Due" - Megadeth or
"Seasons in the Abyss" - Slayer

jwest, Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

One not mentioned:

Judas Priest's "Victim Of Changes"

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

Stairway To Heaven

SRSLY, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

No Aerosmith, huh? Oh heck then - Sweet Emotion.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

I keep thinking I should get me some Judas Priest

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

Slayer "Postmortem"

Regular John (Regular John), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

People's idea of heavy metal is really out of context. If Funkadelic is heavy metal then Otis Redding is hip hop. No disrepect to the funkateers, I'm a big fan, but they are funk rock for sure.

Best metal track, anything off Megadeth's "Rust IN Peace"

Stone (stone), Thursday, 20 April 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Not THE best, but I really like "War Eagle" and "Like A Goddamn Rat" by Early Man.

The best, of course, is "See You In Hell" by Grim Reaper.

Helltime Producteau, Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

jwest iz awn the m.

"See You In Hell" is outstanding for so many reasons.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Angel of Death or Raining Blood
You Suffer
Battery, Master of Puppets, Damage Inc., Creeping Death
Number of the Beast
Painkiller
War Pigs, Supernaut

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

"New Millennium Cyanide Christ" by Meshuggah

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

forgot to mention anything on Antrax's Persistance of Time album.

Also, not to be overly critical, but some people need to know the difference between death metal and heavy metal. I'll admit that Slayer and Sepultura are borderline, but bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death, and Carcass are definitely death metal.

jwest, Thursday, 20 April 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

Nazareth, "Ballad Of Hollis Brown" -or- "This Flight Tonight"
Judas Priest, "Diamonds And Rust"

hank (hank s), Friday, 21 April 2006 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

how do we get this far in this topic with Iron Maiden?

"Run To the Hills" or "Two Minutes To Midnight" or "The Trooper"

undeadsinatra, Friday, 21 April 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

Up The Irons!

That being said however, we can't continue the thread without calling forth Ronnie for Dio's "Last In Line". Fair's fair.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 April 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Finally seeing Maiden last year made me realise just how awesome a song Phantom of the Opera really is. That is surely a strong contender for the title being debated herein!

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 21 April 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

A fight between "United", "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love", "Photograph" and "Jump". None of them very heavy, I know.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

"The Conjuring" by Megadeth came to mind first, but the best ever...hm...I gotta go with "Angel of Death".

p.j. (Henry), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Iron Man seconded. Primal Concrete Sledge, Walk, and Fucking Hostile by Pantera are all brilliant. Back in Black maybe?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Holy Wars/The Punishment Due" - Megadeth

This was the first song that popped up in my mind. I still listen to it constantly, and I never listen to any other Megadeth songs these days.

Then someone mentioned Raining Blood, and I had to change my mind.

others that are close for me:

Slayer - Mandatory Suicide, War Ensemble
Napalm Death - Mass Appeal Madness
Metallica - Orion, Sanitarium, Fight Fire with Fire

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (the Anthrax version... *flees for life*)
Meshuggah - New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Morbid Angel's "Chapel of Ghouls"

josh in sf (stfu kthx), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

some that I are super classic for me, that I don't think deserve to be called the "best ever":

Exhorder's - Desecrator
Pantera's - Primal Concrete Sledge
Dead Horse's - The Murder Song

josh in sf (stfu kthx), Friday, 21 April 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, the Anthrax Sabbath Bloody Sabbath actually was extremely good as I remember...
*flees for life too*

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Either Slayer's "Angel of Death" or "Postmortem", whith honourable mention to "Master of Puppets" and "Holy Wars".

a. begrand (a begrand), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

"Over the Mountain" by Ozzy
