dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm not really twee... more hipster than twee.

bart hooganot (stimpson), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Willfully obscure, perhaps?

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally gay?

Kidding, I like all of those minus moldy peaches

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, too many competent rhythm sections to achieve true tweeness

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

gee, yesterday i couldn't even spell "hipster" and now i are one!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

tweeness rears its ugly-kitten head with the inclusion of the hated decemberists. then it disappears again, though.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

twee rating = 3 (not very twee)

Ryan WS (fffv), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave, you've even HEARD of all of those? The Mountain Goats? M83? Venetian Snares? Are these all emo or something?

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

blur? radiohead? man!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

;-) sorry

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've heard of Radiohead and Blur. They're Soca, right?

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - is Wooden the english response to Mr. Snrub???

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, not very twee and not very good either.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 26 July 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a Mr. Snrub? Is that some kind of popular music combo?

Wooden, Monday, 26 July 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave, you've even HEARD of all of those? The Mountain Goats? M83? Venetian Snares? Are these all emo or something?
-- Wooden (josephgoode...), July 26th, 2004.

Yeah. Mountain Goats is actually a guy who used to post here. M83 is an electronic shoegaze band, pitchforkmedia.com really liked them. Venetian Snares are a hardcore glitch kind of band.

They're all familiar names if you're follow music way too closely and have no life like me.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, JD's not posting here anymore? What'd I miss?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very disappointed in the lack of tweeness. 0/10 and a great insult

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Listen and learn,
Side A of a tape I made last week:

Orange Juice, "Felicity"

Abba, "Knowing Me, Knowing You"
Belle & Sebastian, "Women's Realm"
Sly & the Family Stone, "Runnin' Away"
Heavenly, "C is the Heavenly Option"
Dismemberment Plan, "Elle & Ben"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

dl, I heartily approve of Sound + Vision.

I just made this!

1 tv theme - aquaman
2 gerry rafferty - baker street

20 glen campbell - wichita lineman

Judge me appropriately.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm... i'd say both of those are on the same levels of twee as mine so far. there are bursts and stabs of twee.

is "nite klub" twee? sonny has abba and belle and sebastien fighting (or picking daisies) in his corner, while the tv theme from aquaman and wichita lineman manage to frame derrick's choice appropriately.

there is a draw on emo points with sonny's sufjan stevens contribution weighing the same as derrick's dismemberment plan!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops; the sufjan stevens is mine, the d. plan sonny's. and i thought it would be more twee than emo? oh well.

That fairport song is the most-listened-to in my itunes right now.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

doglatin needs to make me a mixed cd

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 26 July 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only does Sonny have B & S, he picked their tweeest song.
9/10 twee!

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 26 July 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

roxy - mail me at address below :-)

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Derrick has Phoenix. The twee-ometer has gone off the twee scale.

___ (___), Monday, 26 July 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Glenn Campbell at the end? Let me quote Blue Velvet and invoke the hipsters of Williamsburg to explain how untwee that is: "Heineken?!?! Fuck that shit! … PABST BLUE RIBBON!!!"

musto, Monday, 26 July 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine had a Babyface song on it, too, but I forgot it when I was writing the tracklist down. (I rep for Hoosier Soul.) Those are totally the tweest D.Plan & Sly Stone songs; can't believe I didn't get props for Heavenly. Derrick's mix is good, though I haven't heard a good portion of it. Twee props for old folky stuff and kitschy tv theme and Baker Street.

I am listening to Camera Obscura.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

not very twee. you need some MUM

kephm, Monday, 26 July 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a fairly twee mixtape that I've just made for my new boyfriend. I absolutely *hate* myself for giving in to my twee impulses on certain songs here... I congratulate myself for putting 'I C One Female' in amongst all the slushy love songs though.

Belle and Sebastian - 'Seeing other People' (Slow version)
Delgados - 'Everything goes around the water'
Gorky's - 'Let's Get Together'
Felt - 'The Ballad of the Band'
Pulp - 'Nites of Suburbia'
Hefner - 'Dragnet for Jesus'
The Karelia - 'To His Coy Dietress'
Luke Haines - 'How to Hate the Working Classes'
Sons & Daughters - 'Johnny Cash'
Mogwai - 'Xmas Steps'

Tindersticks - 'Tiny Tears'
Clinic - 'Distortions'
The Clientele - 'I Want You More Than Ever'
Yann Tiersen - 'The One off the Amelie soundtrack where she's skimming stones on the canal'
Divine Comedy - 'Songs of Love'
Looper - 'On the Flipside'
Black Box Recorder - 'IC One Demale'
Hefner - 'Goethe's Letter to Vic Chesnutt'
Blur - 'To the End' (French version with Francoise Hardy)
Belle and Sebastian - 'Here Comes The Sun'

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate wins.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

wow! that's about as twee as it comes. good blur, divine comedy and GZM choices. i may attempt to out twee it when i get home later on.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i made this CD for a friend once:

heavenly - our love is heavenly
sweet william - ambiguous
the cat's miaow - hollow inside
mccarthy - way of the world
relationships - spoilt kid
birdie - folk singer
the field mice - emma's house
sweet william - invisible ink
heavenly - it's you
the orchids - walter
belle & sebastian - le pastie de la bourgeoisie
mrs. kipling - sha la la
birdie - linus
the orchids - women priests & addicts
harper lee - clifton st. passage
blueboy - toulouse
the clientele - an hour before the light
the cat's miaow - make a wish
blueboy - fondette
harper lee - doing nothing
the clientele - reflections after jane
the dufflecoats - sunny tuesday afternoon
the field mice - an earlier autumn
the relationships - country catalogue
belle & sebastian - dirty dream #2

from what i can gather the clientele would resent appearing on this disc but it sounds soooooooo gooooooooood

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that version of "to the end." never been able to find it.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I would, but I COULD top all these mixes by including but one song from Joanna Newsom's "Milk-Eyed Mender" on a disc consisting of nothing else but hardcore Screwston freestyles. The overwhelming tweeness of Newsom's mewlings instantly curdles everything it comes in contact with.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The French version of 'To the End' is on the B-side of 'Country House'. Oh God, 'Country House'. The terror! The terror!

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I may or may not have La Casa Azul hiding somewhere up my sleeve though.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the playlist from my first ever radio show last Wednesday. I actually had it in mind to curb my most twee impulses, but in practice this just means that there are no Amelia Fletcher bands (tho her vocals are on the Pooh Sticks song):

KG: Sex toy box
Yo La Tengo: Today is the day (ep vsn)
Aislers Set: Fire engines
Electrelane: On parade
Oh-OK: Brother
Frenchmen: Runaway
My Bloody Valentine: The things I miss
Slumber Party: New Trouble
Shop Assistants: Train from Kansas City
Dougal Reed: Go your own way
Cannanes: Ern Malley
Pastels: Coming through
Hidden Cameras: Worms cannot swim nor can they walk
Bearsuit: Prove Katie wrongg
Pipas: Mental
New Order: Leave me alone
Radio Dept.: The city limit
Clean: Diamond shine
Siddeleys: Bedlam on the mezzanine
Luna: Astronaut
Magnetic Fields: Fear of trains
Dolly Mixture: Welcome to the perfect day
Wire: Mannequin
Orange Juice: Three cheers for our side
Chills: Rain
Pooh Sticks: Sweet baby James
Feelies: Slipping (into something)
Clientele: From a window
Razorcuts: Jade
Pines: The rest
Fat Tulips: Last to know
Mountain Goats: Against pollution
Ballboy: Born in the USA

brian patrick (brian patrick), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the only person I know who doesn't like Amelia Fletcher's voice. It's a lonely place.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

aside from brian and kate, no one here is really twee. and the word emo has been completely bastardized. if it doesn't sound like the promise ring or sunny day
real estate in some fashion, then it's not emo. i went to high school with the twee-est
of the twee people and the emo-est among the emotional-- and btw, the two cannot
exist without cancelling eachother out. when they touch, they both dissolve.
i hate amelia fletcher's voice. and aside from the microphones and (sometimes) the
make-up, i hate k records. the guy who started this post made about as un-twee a
mix tape as you can make out of songs from people who may not be living by the
hair of the dog... he made a tape like someone who prefers organic vegetables. not
that that's a bad thing mind you. i like most of the stuff on the mix and i like organic
stuff... carbon... mmm...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and patrick

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry, did I win because the tape was the most twee, or the best? And can I really be twee if I don't like Amelia Fletcher? And is it a good thing or a bad thing to be twee in the first place?

I don't wear hairclips and pinafores, y'know...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry for the stupid question, but what means "twee"?

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Not stupid at all. I've been wondering the same thing.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't see how Sons & Daughters - Jonny Cash is twee. It is a pretty bold tune.

Twee = music that makes you go "meh". The modern equivalent of MOR / AOR.

___ (___), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

See, that's not how I understand 'twee', I think of songs that aren't necessarily MOR/AOR, that my parents are unlikely to have heard of, good guitar songs with not much in the way of balls.

So yeah, 'Johnny Cash' definitely isn't twee, and neither's Mogwai, or Magoo, or Black Box Recorder...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate - I agree, I just wanted to make a kind of rash generalisation.

And Agree with the others that you say are not twee. I just have more an issue with Sons & Daughters being called twee, as they are the best band to come out of this part of the world for some time.

___ (___), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Twee scores to date:

dog latin - 3
Sonny A. - 8 (I do not know the dismemberment plan song, but I knock down points for that anyway)
derrick - 5
Kate Jane Connolly - 6
fortunate hazel - 8 (too much sarah stuff)
brian patrick - 10 (extra points from me for including KG, even though that song isn't particularly twee. yet more points for including the pastels)

Ryan WS (fffv), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i love it, my twee score was lowered for having too much sarah stuff.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that said, brian patrick's playlist is pretty ace.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

thats not really twee. its more like, pitchfork-friendly, than anything else.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the guy who started this post made about as un-twee a
mix tape as you can make out of songs from people who may not be living by the
hair of the dog... he made a tape like someone who prefers organic vegetables. not
that that's a bad thing mind you. i like most of the stuff on the mix and i like organic

come again?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

since when did pitchfork like the fat tulips and pipas?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like the closest Pitchfork has come to even acknowledging Pipas is in their review of the admittedly-weak Matinee comp "Romantic and Square is Hip and Aware." They're not mentioned by name, just summarily dismissed when the Lucksmiths are named "the only band on this collection whose own material is at all noteworthy."

brian patrick (brian patrick), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dog latin's def. more hipster than twee, where-as Kate's seemed straight on the twee Mark. Sonny A was half-half.

Christ I dunno what Twee is either. Good music taste though dog latin.
