One terrible band after another...

Snow Patrol...The Thermals...My Chemical Romance...The Hives...

I need to stop watching Subterranean on M2 - it's making me want to never buy another record made after 1977 ever again

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Thermals aren't bad. I keep saying this and occasionally someone listens. It's sort of like a mantra.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god they were the worst of the bunch. Wifey and I were just wondering how Sub Pop is gonna sell any of those. At leats I can sorta see the appeal of a band like My Chemical Romance - the kids dig it - but The Thermals song was so offensively hookless, unimaginative, and boring, I wanted to smash the TV. It reminded me of Dead Milkmen doing Nirvana straight-faced, complete with totally contrived drum set destruction. Awful kanawful.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching The Alternative on VH1C instead, suckaz! Subterranean does indeed suck ass.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

On the bright side, Piebald, while still pretty awful, seem to be expanding their pallette a bit.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Snow Patrol's not bad, I've never seen any of their videos so I don't know if that might make me like 'em less, but Final Straw is a damn solid Brit-rock album, the kind of thing you always thought Travis had in 'em but never did.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i quite like snow patrol. the hives give me the shits though.

gem (trisk), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I switched over so I can participate, this Piebald guy looks exactly like my first guitar teacher.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaaa

A lot of people have been speaking about Blonde Redhead's 'evolution,' but this sounds exactly like the same sub-Sonic Youth indie crapola my friends loved back in the mid-nineties

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

DEVO VIDEO ON THE ALTERNATIVE YO! SATISFACTION!!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really loved the first Thermals album (it rocks very hard and has a lovely, unique sensibility to it) but I haven't listened to the new one besides one download. If that song was any indication, I see where you're coming from, Roger, but I wouldn't write them off entirely.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost omg the satisfaction video is sooo magnificent

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the devo dvd + bonghits = another world of giggles

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If one ever forgets how much Devo rules, that video is all you need to remember.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah now the Alternative is playing Nick Cave "Mercy Seat"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

grrrr

this is fun we should do this every week

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no reason not to.
THIS THREAD IS NOW THE DESIGNATED SUBTERRANEAN VS THE ALTERNATIVE THREAD!!!!
k thx bye

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG this Hives shit is terrible. What's up with the lame ass Jagger moves?

The only cool thing about this band is the fat guy. You KNOW he's got a side project and it's awesome

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

not Peaches AGAIN VS who are Wolfgang Press again?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I actually like this Dresden Dolls vid-glad they're playing it again, but I have it on my hard drive.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it was ok - who are they?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

read this, rog:
Anyone heard the Dresden Dolls CD yet?

T REX VIDEO ON VH1C RIGHT NOW Y'ALL

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Face it - music television is for watching when you should really be outside having fun.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS THREAD IS NOW THE DESIGNATED SUBTERRANEAN VS THE ALTERNATIVE THREAD!!!!

So let's get to it! The Alternative is playing Bad Religion "American Jesus" right now. They also have played some Violent Femmes, Matthew Sweet, L7 and Love and Rockets so far.
Subterranean hasn't started yet but tonights guest should be TV on the Radio.
Who's up for a shitty music television bitchfest?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! NOOOOOOO!!!!!
IT'S THAT MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES SONG FROM CLUELESS!!!!!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 9 August 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Subterranean: ugh, they're playing Keane again. oh, new Badly Drawn Boy now. Not that bad, but the video looks kinda like "Paranoid Android"
The Alternative: meh, Lush.

yes, I'm bored

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 9 August 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

good show tonight.

Lush - "Superblast!"
Charlatans - "The Only One I Know"
JAMC - "April Skies"
Morrissey - "We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful"
Pop Will Eat Itself - "Can U Dig It?"
Electronic - "Getting Away With It"
PiL - "Rise"
Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Kiss them for Me"
MMBs - "Where'd You Go?"
Afghan Whigs - "Debonair"
Love and Rockets - "Motorcycle"
Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

and a bunch of others that weren't so hot. I don't know what was on Subterranean but I don't think it could possibly be better.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 9 August 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha, the Damned cover of Love's "Alone Again Or". The Alternative wins by a mile.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 9 August 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Alternative just played Kraftwerk "The Telephone Call" and now they're playing Devo "Freedom of Choice". This bodes well.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 16 August 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't play tonight, fellas, i gotta be up in four hours to drive 11.

The Veils are hosting Subterranean tonight, FYI (who the fuck are The Veils?)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG ALEX A KILLING JOKE VIDEO!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in.

Sahara Hotnights. Terrible. Lordy is that drummer hot, though. The vest!!!

Even the Susanna Hoffs solo joint rocks harder than this.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to punch this dude from the Veils in the face

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

so i'm doing this alone now?

I like this Piebald song now. It's catchy.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hey rog,
I really didn't watch much Subterranean at all tonight. Did I miss anything good that they haven't shown before?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

As a VH1C "The Alternative" fan, I want to participate too!

(a.) I too saw the Killing Joke video and also thought of Alex when it was being played. It was actually pretty visually exciting!
(b.) *squeals* Ultravox!! "Passing Strangers"!! Ultravox!! "Passing Strangers"!! Makes little New Romantic fanatic me happy happy happy!! *squeals*
(c.) *squeals* Depeche Mode!! "But Not Tonight"!! They're actually playing this video!! *squeals*
(d.) "Whoa, The Cure's 'Fascination Street'?? WHOA." *ogle*
(e.) Devo's "Freedom of Choice" is no "Jocko Homo" but it's damn close to it in terms of classic-ness.
(f.) Heh. They went for a GOOD Gene Loves Jezebel song. That's cause to celebrate, even if the video's nothing to write home about.
(g.) Missing Persons! "Words"! A chance to see Warren Cuccurullo before he was Muscle Man! (BTW, I wonder how tiny Dale Bozzio is IRL, since she looks shorter than Warren and I know I towered over Warren when I met him.)
(h.) Ahh, Lene Lovich. "Lucky Number". The universe is right again.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Uh, with the exception of (a.), that was supposed to be a "How I reacted at the time they played the various videos I listed above" list. I also obv need to calm the hell down there. *laughs*)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what time is this Vh1 show on? I got to tivo it.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

tonight:

Husker Du : Makes No Sense at All
Jesus & Mary Chain : whatever one from _Automatic_ has all the stars
My Bloody Valentine: Soon
The Damned : Anything
Pixies : Velouria

hell yeah

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what time is this Vh1 show on? I got to tivo it.

Every Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday night from 10 p.m. (Central time -- 11 p.m. Eastern) onward. The Sunday show is two hours long and the Wednesday and Thursday ones are one hour in length.

Really. It is the greatest video show ever. Or from 1991 onward, at least.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(BTW, I am SO glad our local NBC affiliate currently airs its late night news broadcast at 11 p.m. while the Olympics are going on. That way, I don't have to skip out on the news in order to watch "The Alternative".)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Kingfish I believe that JAMC vid was "Blues From A Gun"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds about right

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to smash the TV.

complete with totally contrived drum set destruction.

Homarus Vulgaris, Thursday, 19 August 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

New Order's "The Perfect Kiss" was on too...somehow I'd never seen that video before. Awesome.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 19 August 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's ON!

we've started with "Gone Daddy Gone." Not bad.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Perfect Kiss" video is on a bonus DVD that comes with "International" and also has the
video for "True Faith" and a live performance of "Blue Monday", FWIW Andrew.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG ALEX A KILLING JOKE VIDEO!

Which one was it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

A New Day

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, nice. Jaz in Nazcal spider get-up. Geordie painted black. Raven & Big Paul tatooed. Newsreel footage. It's a beaut.

http://www.an-irrational-domain.net/images/geordie/geordie07.jpg

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 August 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

funky. looks melted.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

KC hated that fucker once it was done, he barely even played it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

would YOU?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's butt ugly. Funny this is, if you look at KC's Journals his design sketches are in there and it looks exactly the same. Of course we're talking about a guy who was never much happy with ANYTHING here.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

poor kurdt. his failed career as an instrument designer caused him to eat a breakfast of buckshot.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, thanks for helping to clarify this "Hangin' with MTV" co-host conundrum for me, Aaron! Yeah. Karen Bryant. Ha. Oh dear. I am so losing my memory....

(That does sound like something Faith No More would do, BTW.)

There weren't NOTHING cool about Tabitha Soren.

Double negative = you're actually agreeing with me here. Celebrate!

(No, really. I know what you mean. Why would you think that?)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a whole SLP VHS tape of "Hangin" (that is if it hasn't yet completely deteriorated) including that FNM bit in storage. I haven't watched it in years, I wonder if I have the bit where pre-fame Brian "Marilyn Manson" Warner was interviewed in the audience and talked about his band The Spooky Kids...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

back at that age, i mainly taped stuff like Aerosmith or Queen appearances...

oh look! A Sugar vid! cool!

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

tonight's been pretty dire. So far just Sugar, Depeche Mode and Curve have been noteworthy.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

omg the Jim Carroll Band.

doing a nasal Sweet Jane

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this is terrible.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

gah. another Jane's vid. SEEN IT

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever programs this show is running out of ideas. I'm watching Smackdown.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

HA! Morrissey taped at a Hangin W/ MTV!

THIS THREAD HAS COME FULL CIRCLE

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe the adulation Morrissey is getting in this video. The idea that he was actually fairly popular in the US in the early-mid 90s is still somewhat unfathomable to me.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 27 August 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, here we go again.

we start out with New Order's "Fine Time", with plenty of cheezy 1989 video effects

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

to be followed up by....

inxs

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'm going to have to start a separate Subterranean threda

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

you did already

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy Mondays, anyone?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No, most of my Mondays are quite dull. ;)

Really, though. Ever since watching 24 Hour Party People, I've started to develop a tiny bit of an appreciation for the artists from the Madchester era. Plus I found it really cool that there was actually a band out there with a DANCER as a member.

OMG. I wonder why they won't play "Connected". That's the lone Stereo MC's song I was familiar with for a long period of time.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

SHRIEKBACK! "NEMESIS"! YAY! :)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAH Shriekback!

this looks like an ep of "Jim Henson's Storyteller"

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hell yeah! J&MC "Happy When It Rains!"

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I heart that Alternative show.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Gary Numan's "Cars" is one of my favorite videos ever. I don't care if I've seen it half a billion times before in the past -- I still think it's awesome. And the "Nemesis" video -- yeah, it's hilarious, but hilariously brilliant IMHO.

For some reason, I just thought, "Hey, cool, Nitzer Ebb!" I think one of my friends is influencing me more than I thought music-wise.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nemesis" changed my life. Kind of.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

it made you swear off your career in the military?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It made me appreciate the wonderful combination of pop and goth.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also "parthenogenesis"!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Both are good points that shall be taken.

OMG, Paul Westerburg's "Dyslexic Heart"! Ha. Last time I saw this was back in 1992!! *laughs* This video looks SO DATED! Hell, the *song* sounds SO DATED! But it's all fun.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit. Fishbone covering Curtis Mayfield

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

listen to pas/cal. the cover of duchess on their web site. has life without buildings broken up? they should (have) do(ne) a cover of sweet and tender hooligan,

youn, Monday, 30 August 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, i think they're gone.

oh wow. "Jesus Built my Hotrod". Flashback to high school & riki rachtman.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, this is the first Ministry song I ever heard. I was SHOCKED HALF TO DEATH when I heard "Revenge" several years later, obv.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY FUCK the PLASMATICS!

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahah

"WARNING: This video was created & performed by professional conceptual artists. You should not attempt to try this at home."

enh. the actual song is too metalloid.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

y'know, folks, sometimes your art can be so subtle that it requires a schoolbus driving thru a wall of television sets to properly get your point across.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm currently staring at this Plasmatics video with my mouth agape.

xpost -- Ha. Totally.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

HEAVEN 17! MY MUSICAL COMFORT FOOD! GRINS GALORE!

(Though I do wish they'd play the video for "Penthouse & Pavement" instead. Or hell, even "Temptation". But I'm not complaining. I can remember when I would've done almost anything to see the "Let Me Go" video.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha ha ha, suddenly I feel this compulsion to figure out what I did with my old flannel overshirts. Um, 1992 revivalism tonight, anyone? (Not that I'm complaining -- I'd much rather deal with this as my generation's musical heritage than have to deal with the hair bands this type of music rendered irrelevant and uncool.)

God. Alice in Chains. Layne Staley R.I.P.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

my flannel shirts were remarkably useful. Michigan winters, yo, and stomping thru them to get to class for 6 years.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I would imagine flannel shirts would be a lot more useful to you in the MI climate than they were for me down here in, um, TX. (But I perspired anyway. Ha, early '90s fashion victim!)

God, Eddie Trunk is so idiotic. I've seen this (Thrashing Doves) video before on VH1C! How can he say he can't ever remember not seeing this video before on that channel?? God, I know I've seen this one like three or four times, the first on the "I Love the '80s" program! And my memory's pretty darn dire!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and thus we have this week's obligatory Morrissey vid

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. But it was a fun one. And that song's stuck in my head now. In spite of the easily earwormed "Tom's Diner" that's currently being played. Or at least it WAS stuck in my head. Damn you, "Tom's Diner". (BTW, I love thinking back to a time when the hairdo Suzanne Vega is sporting in this video was considered oh so very hip. Those were simpler times, weren't they?)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 30 August 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There weren't NOTHING cool about Tabitha Soren Layne Staley R.I.P.
