it's pretty fantastic yes.

4 CD set of their complete works on Basta august 3rd, i.e. Tuesday. Raymond Scott / Perrey & Kingsley fans watch out.

ah: not complete works. a historic overview of the dutch electronic & electro-pop scene. but it includes 'song of the second moon' (aka 'electronic music') from the early 60's, worth the whole set for that alone. though I expect the rest will be just as great if slightly less rhythmic & catchy.

Milton, have I mention how much I like you? Yes, I have. But I will reiterate it now. Thank you.

this thread needs your help I think

The four cd compilation is not really a reflection of what happened in the dutch electronic scene and pop scene, but a compilation of stuff recorded in the Philips Studios (at the Fysics Laboratories) in Eindhoven. As I've just learned, Varese made his Poeme Electronique there. There was a piece on this compilation in a dutch newspaper yesterday that I've missed, unfortunately. Currently there's a thread about this on the Subjectivisten forum (in dutch...) that's now somehow evolved into a search to the origin of 'the groove' in electronic music.

thanks for the correction.

the baltan / dissevelt record is certainly some of the earliest pure electronic pieces with scootin' tape-loop grooves and rhythms. released around the same time as scott's 'soothing sounds' & ad jingles.

one month passes...
just got the box this morning. I wasn't prepared for the packaging; Basta's completely outdone themselves this time. 7 booklets, close to 200 pages of essays, photos of their 50's/60's electronic studios with gear lists, shots of them working, graphic scores, all the album covers and 7" sleeves, huge fold out posters of sheet music and timelines, nerd paradise. Reissue of the year hands down, they should get an award for this.

the main attraction is still Song of the Second Moon, basically the very first electronic pop music album. 7 of the tracks are on disc 1, another piece is moved to disc 2 (the most abstract piece on the album, appears on disc 2 with the other pieces for dance), but it's all here. if Basta is smart they'll do a seperate release with the original track order; it's a piece of history, and heads will explode once people start hearing it on a wider scale.

but if you're even slightly on the fence about it, buy the box now, it's worth the money...
