Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw that Modest Mouse thing yesterday and immediately ennui gripped my system and, much like Chewbacca and Steve Case and many others in the mid-nineties, started to eat my balls.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ATP Camber Sands Event DEC O4

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

$5 says 'Sebadoh' plays this.

TEH POSTAL SERVICE OR DEATH CAB 4 CUT1E?!!?!?!?!!

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If Malkmus plays, I am going. Three or four times.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we'll get lucky and MM will be too busy curating to play their slack jawed rock for the kids?

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me be frank:

I like "Float On" better than the crap that came before it.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't see that pic at the top of the thread. What does it tell us?

DJMencap0))), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That you'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better not pout
I'm telling you why
Modest Mouse is cur-a-ting
ATP

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

odds of bands appearing:

sonic youth - 80%
mike watt - 75%
deerhoof - 50%

last year was great and this year will be too. the curator doensn't make that much of a difference.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

why can't HELLA curate ATP?

if thee Sebadoh plays it'll have to be under one of their 'wacky' side project names, like Sentridoh or summat

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Suckadoh"

Some ILM hater-virus is infiltrating Ned's brain and corrupting his elegant prose...

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

why does that graphic require a username and password to display?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Ned is one of the biggest haters on ILM!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Some bands never worked for me (in this case, with the exception of two or three songs...max).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That just seemed more "nya-nya-nya-NYA-nya-esque" than the usual gentlemanly derision

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It dates from that period of my life (the early nineties) when I was more inclined to rage without direction against folly -- now I just do the same thing on the Internet, and let mute words do my arguing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the ONLY person who gets a username prompt every time I load this thread?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I do too. I think it's part of the thing I mentioned on the UK thread that the whole ATP network seems to have gone password controlled at the moment.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the only "mute word" I can think of is..."hmmmf"

was there ever a deaf/mute singer of a band, I wonder. i heard about some club in San Fran that has something to do with that. Imagine Polyphonic Spree as deaf mutes.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

A GLORY AND A DREAM FOREVER

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

curse you Hogan! that doesn't work.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Would someone be kind enough to explain exactly what the site is saying in terms of a new festival/line-up? As stated above, it seems a password is required and it's REALLY FUCKING LAME to post about this and then ignore requests from those who are part of ILM, but I guess not in the SUPER COOL CLICK tha knows such things....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm assuming actually that modest mouse is involved, so, coupled with this annoying password issue, I formally announce my complete disinterest in ATP this year. I'm sure they are weeping tears of shame and playing violins.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to agree, but I still think someone should answer up....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

As stated above, Modest Mouse is curating. THAT'S ALL. CALM DOWN.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I start a different thread for the 2 of us who thinks this will be a great time and looks forward to the other bands they'll announce?

I'm interested, but not terribly hopeful. It could really go either way from those headliners. I would hope that it gets less-indie as they announce more bands, but that's highly doubtful. It looks like they want to guarantee that they make some money this year.

Lou Reed performing "velvets and all classic hits" >>>>>>>>>>> Sonic Youth, Deerhoof, and Cat Power

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Yes... and I'd rather listen to Lou sing those songs all night than sit through any part of another Sonic Youth performance.

If it's between V.U. songs that I've never seen played live and a set of his cover versions of Edgar Allen Poe stories or whatever, I'm going to pull for a "Candy Says."

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago)

BB, are you going?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't have tickets yet, but I am defintely going. Let's meet up this time for real. Despite all the hating, I think this show will be a lot of fun. I had a blast at Coachella just relaxing and hipster-watching... I am hoping for something similar... did you go to this last year? I heard it was a bit of a clusterfuck with the venue.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

This ATP reminds of that one time that festival had a shitty lineup and sucked a whole bunch.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I went last year... it was lots of fun... the venue was fine, for the most part.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Being able to leave and go drink in the parking lot was great.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

this lineup is genius! there won't be any cynical ilm-ish bastards there.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Friday, 17 September 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah. they'll think they're having fun, but we'll know that they really aren't.

Morrissey
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Devo
Billy Idol
Tears for Fears
Ian Brown of Stone Roses
Missing Persons
Flock of Seagulls

Franz Ferdinand
The Killers
Muse
Death Cab for Cutie
The Walkmen

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

key word in elvis' post was "more." i'm not expecting much progressiveness from the missing persons reunion.

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago)

You never know. especially given that the new Missing Persons comeback album has been produced by O' Rourke and remixed by DFA.

Mr. Policeman, Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

(at least a Missing Persons reunion is far more progressive than the fucking Epoxies.)

i didn't take pics of this set. they're just not that photogenic.

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:45 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
so, uh, did anyone go to this? was it as bad as everyone thought it would be? Anything redeeming from the festival at all (save the 2 or 3 bands who aren't pretty wack)?
I went to the ATP LA in 2002 and hope they get their shit back together cause this one seemed to be scraping the bottle of the barrel all around.

ainsley harriott, Monday, 8 November 2004 05:21 (twenty years ago)

I didn't go but it was raining on Sunday so I'm sure that made things better :)

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

The Flaming Lips performance/spectacle/audience participation glee-athon was pretty much the greatest thing ever (and I'm not even a fan of the band).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

It barely rained at all, actually - a little at the end of Built to Spill's set, and a little at the end of Flaming Lips' -- but even those were just mild drizzles.

Built to Spill and Stephen Malkmus played sets of almost entirely new songs (Built to Spill did a Halo Benders song, and Malkmus played "Do Not Feed the Oyster," but I think everything else from each was new - and sounded great).

Flaming Lips were so fucking fun. 500 balloons everywhere, confetti, Wayne Coyne walking across the crowd a'la Coachella in the inflatable space bubble, and a duet with Peaches on "War Pigs."

Modest Mouse took this chance to play some of the less bass-guitar-drums songs from their albums - they did some acoustic ones with the banjo and cello. It was nice. They also played "Interstate 8" and "Cowboy Dan," but their set was WAY too short.

Lou Reed was a bit of a bummer, I thought... I didn't know most of the solo songs (except "Sattelite of Love" and a couple more) but everything he played - incl. the Velvets songs ("All Tomorrow's Parties," "Jesus," etc.) he played had this creepy, mid-80s sheen with chorus pedals and snappy drums and synths. I really wish he would have just played acoustic solo or something. His voice sounded good, but it was all a bit uncomfortable. Left before it ended... not sure what I missed. The next day, Malkmus said onstage "so, did you guys see Lou Reed? That was neat. Parts of it, I mean. Some of it." Or something like that.

The venue was AWESOME. They set everything up in a park right on the water, overlooking the skyline of Long Beach, with the boat in the background. I think after all the coimplaints about organization last year, they went overboard to fix everything this time -- plenty of food, toilets, space, security, etc...

...the thing is: Nobody was there. Which was nice, in many respects -- the crowd was a nice collection of polite, considerate indie geeks -- but I have a feeling they just totally shit the bed on ticket sales. They must have lost a great deal of money. Which is a shame, because it was everything I could want out of a concert (regardless of which bands were playing).

Other highlights for me were Lungfish, who were creepy as ever in all the right ways, and the Cramps, who were also just fun as hell.
All in all, I had a great time -- sorry I missed you, Morris...

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was looking for you the whole time! But there were so many guys with beards there... (I saw one guy wearing a Q And Not U shirt, but he didn't have a beard.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 8 November 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't the beardless Q and Not U shirt wearer. I had a sweatshirt that says "Free the West Memphis 3" on the back on. One of these days I'll have to post my picture on one of those "what do you look like" threads.

Nostalgia for the Old Cineramadome (Ben Boyer), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:14 (twenty years ago)

What's with this explosion of fratty indie-rock fans? I've never noticed it until these past few ATPs (though my girfriend says that back when she was in college, lots of frat types came to Pavement shows and made fun of the indie kids).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago)

A few members of Pavement were in fraternities (albeit academic, scrabbly ones).
