classic.

can someone tell me is the "Never Scared" thing distributed officially? or was it just a bootleg? if so who distributes it and is it possible to order it for Europe?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to persuade diplo to come to singapore (and zouk club in singapore to book him).

Any singaporeans reading this: bombard zouk with requests...

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

well i think diplo works at http://www.turntablelab.com/ and they used to sell them there. but fuck that site because they don't have a search engine and it's nearly impossible to find anything with the way the sections are broken up.

anyways, i saw them play records in SF one night and it was awful. they played nearly the same mix as on the cd and one of the two dudes spinning (or maybe it was their friend - hopefully) kept doing major trainwrecks. pure noise. and terrible records.

but the cd is still pretty fab

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

The CD is hot, I got it at Gramaphone in chicago for 12.99. Try ordering it from them.

I've never seen them live, but I'm catching Diplo open for RJD2 and I really dug Diplo's Favela Funk mix CD as well.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

$19.99?!?!? WTF! I got it for $12 too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

hollertronix - never scared

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Reading the last post on that thread confirmed my suspicions - that most ppl who are into hollertronix are not really "getting" the dirty south stuff - or they see it as a joke or something which is really too bad.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago)

well jesus its a couple of northern white kids playing to mostly an audience of northern white indie kids...i'm tempted to just say "duh". but yeah duh.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

pfork's ying yang review to thread, etc etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Dude northern white kids loved g-funk when Chronic came out.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago)

oh there are plenty of northern white kids who LOVE lil scrappy. just not that are going to hollertronix gigs.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I found "No Problem" in the discount bin up here in chicago at 2nd hand tunes for 49 cents. Snatched that shit up so fast.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Sadly Hollertronix seemed to have abandoned the great dirty south stuff that made Never Scared interesting on their new Doing it Real Big mix for the likes of ragga (Capleton,Elephant Man,Mrs.Thing) not a bad thing and indie fodder (Postal Service,Mum,Pixeltan)not such a great thing. Sort of inevitable I guess considering their audience but goddamn why must they pander to the kids.

dbl, Friday, 3 September 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago)

They've gone even dirtier south to Brazil man.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

as evidenced by the recent Diplo favela cd you're correct but the Brazlian stuff doesn't even make the slightest cameo on the new mix. I could've done with that moreso than Radio 4 for the upteenth time.

dbl, Friday, 3 September 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago)

They should have put that song that comes in at the 20 minute mark on the favela CD, the one with the vocoder opening and chorus and the guy singing R&B style about "baille funk" or something.

djdee2005, Friday, 3 September 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

its just 2 many djs all over again right?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 6 September 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

i didnt go to hollertronix 2 weeks ago.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

yes the fact that it's also a dj mix means it's just 2manydjs all over again. of course. there need not be any actual overlap in terms of genre. none at all. I'm not fussy anyway.

This Diplo single is good. But its also a bit too much RJD2 and not nearly enough Technics/Mannie Fresh.

djdee2005, Monday, 6 September 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

after i listened to never scared once and loved it i didn't seem to be able to go back to it. but i put it on at a party last night and it totally killed! so i approve again

I went to the feb. philadelphia thing without knowing anything about it, and it didn't seem much different than any other club. I had to wait in line for an hour, that was different, I'll admit. I think they played sweet dreams and a souxie and banshees song. That's when people really went crazy.

What am I missing?

I'll post the Montreal set as soon as I can, in the next couple of days or a week or so. In the meantime a quote from Diplo about the Gwen Stefani remix from the Hollertronix board:

"if yall can find it .. cool . post it the fu** up. I already got paid for it. i dont give a shit about any of my mp3s on the internet. yall are the only people that listen to my shit anyway. if I relied on record sales to eat. Id be like real broke and sad and dead like a zombie"

I don't know much about LaCrate but would like to add that I think Debonair Samir is like one of THE best bmore producers out there... his productions are so clean and dynamic and just pound-you-in-the-face sounding... I wish I could hear "Throw It Up" the one that uses the Lil Jon break every time I walk into a club

Preview of the Matrix 12, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

dude is talented, yeah!

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

he basically introduced the synth horn sound that every other club producer in the city was using at one point a few years back.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

fuck yeah he is....and I don't jsut mean like oh i know who he is....I mean out of all the "elite" bmore producers hes the only one who every single time ive heard his production they just blow everything else away. a lot of times guys come with stuff that sounds tinny or underproduced (and I know that's part of Club's aesthetic in part) but he just seems like he really knows how to craft great sounding beats, like DJ Toomp or someone like that...
