ok, streaming this J.O.Y shit from dfarecords.com

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus a 3CD comp including a MIX!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Up / Say What (DFA Remix) is supa-dupa. It sounds like an experimental club-scene piece ca. 1999, but in a positive and exciting way.

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This is all well and good, but WHEN THE HELL ARE LCD SOUNDSYSTEM GONNA RELEASE THEIR ALBUM??????

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Hisham recording with Pixeltan again or are these old recordings? When's there gonna be a DFA produced Plate Tectonics LP? I'd piss myself with joy.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

this is Hishammmmmm

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD album's out on EMI in January...

Jason J, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

IVE SEEN PIXELTAN SUCK 4 OUT 4 TIMES.

IM JUST SAYING.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you seen them with Hisham?

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

of course, I think dude from OSS is better

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen pixeltan with hisham. he was impressive as always, but over all, the music/show wasn't so good.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the comp is pretty great. best track = LIQUID LIQUID!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What else is on the comp/mix?

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bellhead" could render their entire collected output impotent. it's ridiculously good.

BbetaA, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

as is the juan maclean dancehall track

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ungh, can't contain the jealousy.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

did they just commercially release that JOY track now? i coulda sworn i saw it back in march or april. it's really good! the pixeltan less so, but still good.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

but, yeah, what barima said.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the joy track was never released. i believe it was originally supposed to be a b-side to some import thing. as i've said before, i think it's their best production.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

*DROOOOOL*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That Rapture track, "Alabama Sunshine," is by far my favorite track of theirs.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh lordy

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That Rapture track, "Alabama Sunshine," is by far my favorite track of theirs.

Really? It's OK, but it's one of my least favorite. I even like "Silent Morning" much more.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mo'Wax also released 'Bellhead', right. And yeah, what jess said.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i wish that liquid liquid comp was still in print. my copy is scratched to fuck.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(the expression of interest, not the band)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bellhead" was re-recorded at Plantain. bunch of other stuff too? the 99 Records version was live, which would lead me to believe the Mo Wax one was the same.
J.O.Y. came out in Japan, i think. weird how Tim Goldworthy has been revisiting his past, what with these Major Force West cats and the UNKLE mix from last year...wonder what his high school bandmates are up to?

BbetaA, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Silent Morning" is definitely great, too. I think the Rapture is great when they get a little weirder. I just love the fucked-up harmonizing "whooos" on "Alabama Sunshine." I didn't get why that wasn't an album track.

So what's Black Leotard Front?

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know if EMI had definitely bought DFA?

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

EMI did NOT buy DFA.

BbetaA, Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody tell popbitch

duke nevermind, Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE YOSHIMI P-WE

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Thursday, 30 September 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like some sort of version of Black Dice's "Wastered" is going to be on the comp. This strangely makes me want to hear some sort of DFA remix of an Animal Collective song, as it would be entertaining at the least.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

when DFA remix animal collective look to the skies for some sure collapsing

duke rapture, Friday, 1 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

more EyE remixes plz

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but it would be some HILARIOUS sky collapsing. i'm having trouble even imagining what it could sound like. i mean, technically i can see how it'd work, but damn that would be funny.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

lemin (lemin), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there would be beats...xpost

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

okay okay, dfa in hypothetical beatmaking shockah. i get it.

lemin (lemin), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think DFA should remix DAF, or do a mash-up of DAF and FAD GADGET. Get to it, guys.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"EMI did NOT buy DFA.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

somebody tell popbitch
-- duke nevermind (dan...), September 30th, 2004 11:10 AM."

...and Pitchfork. They have reported the EMI purchase thing today.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

p'fork just said there was a "deal", people, perhaps p'fork as well, are inferring that it means buying, as opposed to a distro deal, or p+d.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, yeah -- it seems like it's most likely a distro deal.

"In related news, the DFA imprint is said to have inked what one insider called a "mega-bucks deal" with major label EMI. Goldsworthy cops to the partnership in the DFA Compilation #2 press release-- which has recently been just a rumor-- mentioning that the two labels have finally "got their shit together." As to what this means for the future of the label, no one's talking quite yet, but it would seem that better distribution and more funding is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg."

Jesus, I don't know why I even give a shit where it comes from - I just want to hear the comp!

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 1 October 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The new single is marked "Copyright DFA Records under exclusive license to EMI", so there's your answer. No sale, just deal.

Jason J, Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's another option, they're not just distributing it and they're not manufacturing it FOR DFA, they're licensing it.

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not exactly sure when it's coming out, but I've got the new LCD Soundsystem song on the blog today. It's not on the same level as "Yeah," but it's pretty hot nonetheless.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i sound like a jerk complaining about the two extra cds when i said i'd pay $17- for the mix cd. i guess it's a steal compared to the money i paid for colette no. 5!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Vahid, you're normally so positive!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Black Leotard track!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the other two discs ARE good!! i mean i plan to buy them when they come out but ...

put it this way: unclassics is genius. but metro area is GENIUS. and genius != GENIUS in this case. and weatherall is obviously just treading water with this mix, and i sort of hate that.

as for the DFA mix, in my mind MIA saying "LAHN-DAN CALLING" is a detonation on par with the opening guitar chords of "house of jealous lovers", whereas everything on the DFA discs is sort of a reiteration of DFA stuff that's already happened.

man, i LOVE the delia gonzalez / gavin russom material though.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

So the LCD Lp's around? Tracklist?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

that Tim Sweeny mix is like an introduction to my music collection

Spinning Down Alone You Spin Alive (ex machina), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the tim sweeney mix is also an insane value. i've paid much much more for far shittier CD's. the part when he goes from kraftwerk into LFO midway thru never fails to get me.

big baby jesus., Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the LCD album still called 'ECLECTIC WARRIOR'?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's probably worth your $17- to buy the dfa #2 for the mix disc but i really think the first two discs could be cut down to one solid disc by killing the juan mclean tracks, the black leotard track (is this chicks on speed?), the j.o.y. tracks and (hate to say it) the black dice track. i am starting to agree with people that without hisham the black dice sound pretty lost (sunroof! they are NOT).

finally how is juan mclean's "dance hall modulator dub" any less laughable than the mo'wax dancehall instrumentals disc everyone always heaps abuse on??

man, i LOVE the delia gonzalez / gavin russom material though.

On the money on the money on the money on the money on the money.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That Black Leotard track is fantastic!

Who finds Mo Wax Dancehall instrumentals laughable and why?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Mo Wax fans. They're stoned and will laugh at anything.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to really like Mo Wax. :(

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I still do (in that I won't throw out the collection anytime soon).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

What do people think of Alabama Sunshine? Wacky!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe my fave ratpure track

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain, I said "WTF"?!?!

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

andy do u h8 post-barbershop??

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, btw. I like Wacky! There's something a bit televangelical about the recent Rapture stuff...

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"finally how is juan mclean's "dance hall modulator dub" any less laughable than the mo'wax dancehall instrumentals disc everyone always heaps abuse on??"

That Mo'Wax instrumentals thing is great! The only thing that's bad about it is that all the non-instrumental versions are obv better. I think people might give it a bit of a hard time cuz it's such a weird (and possibly suspect) conceit to release of instrumentals totally out of context like that, but those instrumentals still sound fantastic on their own (and it is neat to listen to the details of those tracks without the vocals.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Amoeba SF sold 70 copies of this yesterday.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Alabama Sunshine" more every time I hear it, actually.

And "Rise (DFA Remix)" >>>>>>>>>>>> "El Monte". The latter might be the weak point of the compilation (except for the Pixeltan b-side, anyway).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll admit i own a copy of the mo'wax dancehall instrumentals album too.

juan mclean's "i robot" has started to grow on me, a bit. i am always real excited when dutch dudes copy early-90s detroit techno, so why shouldn't i be excited when these dudes copy mid-90s british experimental techno? (of the two lone swordsmen / ferox / mark broom variety)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i still like my mo wax records and still love some of them.

Alabama Sunshine is great - it definately is a bit of a wtf? moment when in comes in though.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the The Juan Maclean tracks!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

me too "Give me Every Little Thing" is gorgeous.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i listened to this 10,000 times on weekend--i had the cds in my changer and over and over again.

eventually i went a little nutty. but it's really good and yeah what a steal!

i like the joy traxx myself (at least the dfa remix). prefer the dfa vocal version of sister saviour to the one on the mix but i already have that on 12 so who can complain.

what is particularly different about beat connection? i haven't listened to the original in a while so i can't figure out how the "dirty disco dub" (or whatever it's called) differs.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i ended up thinking they had put the wrong track on the CD.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no difference -- that's the way it's labeled on the 12" as well ("disco dub version"). I'm very glad they included it. Would've been nice to have the Geist version of House of Jealous Lovers on there as well. Oh well.

I'll take "Wot" over "Alabama Sunshine" any day.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't got this yet, but isn't one version of 'Yeah' labelled 'crass version' or something? Is that just another name for 'stupid version'?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah its just a different name.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Morgat Geist is DJing tonight at Luke and Leroy's in the west village. Cazzo Pazzo, and Italo-Disco party...all NY'ers be there or else...miss good music times.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it still supposed to be gay (as mentioned above)?

I missed him in Detroit but made up for it by buying Unclassics last weekend.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Morgat -- gun clappin' and toe-tappin.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a mixed crowd...but the hosts are gay (mandy and andy of Dance Homos Dance, also responsible for Mad Clams at the Hole...) Cazzo Pazzo is italian for big dick or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

literally cazzo pazzo means mad dick

paul c (paul c), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no difference -- that's the way it's labeled on the 12" as well ("disco dub version").

i never noticed!! i wonder why it's on comp #2 and not #1

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

For fuck's sake. Bought this today and it's got copy control technology on it. I can't play it through iTunes, as I do with all my other music. I have to use some special shitty player that comes on the CD.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm thinking of returning it. It says it's a promo on it - I guess Avalanche shouldn't have sold it to me.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit - I think I threw the receipt away at work. Grrr...

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OK - found receipt. I guess I can go and get all consumer rights on them.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 20 November 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"get up/say what" by pixeltan is very reminscent of one of the trance songs on GTA3-Liberty City [thank you google: "Shake (revolt clogrock remix)" performed by Chris Walsh & Dave Beran]

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 21 November 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

so, is there a thread for talking about the lcd soundsystem album? who's heard it? what's on it? all i've heard is "great release" (which i see is now on slsk), which is great and not at all what i'd expected.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 22 November 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The LCD Soundsystem album

Alba (Alba), Monday, 22 November 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
How's DFA #2 holding up for everyone else?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

listened to it yesterday. very enjoyable but all of the best stuff could have fit on one CD as mentioned somewhere else here. the juan maclean tracks that were produced "at home" suck. "el monte" sucks. "sunplus (remix)" sucks. "wasteder" sucks.

my proposed single cd version:
Casual Friday - black leotard front 15:07
Alabama Sunshine - rapture 2:46
Rise - gonzales/russom 7:26
Get Up Say What - pixeltan 9:10
Yeah (Crass Version) - lcdsoundsystem 9:23
Endless Happiness (eYe Remix) - black dice/eye 7:41
Sunplus (original version) - joy 4:58
Beat Connection - lcdsoundsystem 8:04
Bellhead - liquid liquid 5:39
Sister Saviour (Faster Stronger) - rapture 4:27
Give Me Every Little Thing - juan maclean 4:42

time: ~80 min

a banana (alanbanana), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I love all the Juan Maclean tracks and both Gonzales/Russom tracks. "Casual Friday" should be chopped in half - I like the second half much more.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

"i robot" and "less than human" seem pointless, lifeless to me. maybe I just expect too much from them because "...venus", "...both ways" and "...every little thing" are among dfa's very best. I hope his album is dfa-produced.

a banana (alanbanana), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Dunno about DFA production, but "Tito's Way" (the upcoming Juan MacLean single) reportedly has Nancy Whang vocals- if it turns out to be anything like "You Can't Have It Both Ways" I will be ecstatic.

Telephonething, Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
