Lorelei Gilmore just claimed to be a Sparks fan

Now I don't usually tune into the Gilmore Girls but every once in a while I'm tempted and each time it happens someone on the show makes some rote reference to an obscure band. Last night, while lying in bed, Rory's milf said she was a Sparks fan. Does this warrant discussion?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope.

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe she meant Sparks alcopop, or Sparks, NV.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

heck no. they were talkin' 'bout music

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope yet happens in this our sad universe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What Ned said. (odd coincidence -was listening to "amateur hour" less than 15 minutes ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Full quote plz.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched it a few times. Once, the girl's intellectual friend was talking about how cool The Velvet Underground and Nico is.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

she was telling her new boyfriend (luke) about what cds he needs around the house to appease her or something like that. the wifee was watching and i was sorta paying attention from the computer.

she asked me who the sparks were and i told her they were good, but not as good as the drink.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I disown you from my will. (Not that you were in it.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, dude, Kimono My House is outstanding.

CF: SPARKS VS SPARKS

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly Linda Perhacs was on the soundtrack a week or so ago. I missed the episode, so can't confirm.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of sex in stars hollow these days. i can't believe they lane's band a ska band.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

they made

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't mean in any which way that sparks the band was bad (i really like them) but that sparks the drink has an otherworldly effect on my head

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit Ned, i wanted some of yr shit when you died

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 7 October 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed that episde. What else happened?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

from what i remember, paris' old professor bf died. she cried. uh, rory has some friend that's kinda dorky, and there's this other kid that acts like a twat, but really they're gonna hook up later, obv. lor and luke are dating and it's out in the open. the towns folk don't think it's a good idea that they date because if they break up then the townsfolk will have to choose sides and the town's economy will go down. the grandparents are sleeping in separate beds and hate each other.

this is all coming from someone who doesn't watch the show and hears it out of the corner of his ear while he's on the computer and his wife hogs the tv

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Gilmore Girls. The Sparks mention was cool but a lot of the other music references make me cringe (the Shins? fuck you). First season there was a Young Marble Giants joke/reference thing that was great.

adam (adam), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Gilmore Girls has a pretty long history of music references - some are a bit bland, but a lot of it is pretty great. Not many shows in prime time will have Pavement's "Price Yeah!" be the soundtrack to a scene, you know?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, who can forget the classic episode where Lane wanted to buy the new Belle & Sebastian single but her mom had grounded her?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Lane Kim is awesome. Paris is funnier, though.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right, and that time when Adam Brody was in a band with Rory's friend and they played "Fell in Love with a Girl" at that party and the girl got really drunk and told her mom she was dating a white guy.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the towns folk don't think it's a good idea that they date because if they break up then the townsfolk will have to choose sides and the town's economy will go down.

this part was weird. almost mad no sense. there was a town meeting and it was a big issue, and the thing is, at first, luke and lorelei didn’t think anyone knew they had slept together (best part of the episode: Lorelei woke up in lukes bed and without thinking went downstairs, to the diner! for a cup of coffee, wearing only lukes flannel)

also, the professor’s wake was in rory and roommates apt. and they handed out books to everyone who came

i have no idea why i watch this show and will not make exusces for it

kephm, Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Please note that the Luke / Lorelai issue came up during the regular course of business during a regular town meeting; the meeting wasn't called to specifically discuss this issue.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That town meeting was meant to be ridiculous. It's not consisent with reality, but definitely consistent with how the townies have been written in the past four seasons.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Sally Struthers there?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i just started watching over the summer. i doubt i will make it to the end of the season, but stranger things have happened.

the whole sparks, pavement, etc. soundtrack doesnt surprise me a bit

kephm, Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure that Sally Struthers was in the town meeting scene. She was in the episode, for sure. She was there with Miss Patti and another old woman gossiping in two scenes. She had a funny line, but I can't remember what it was.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren graham is genius, she goes from hilarious to lovestruck to dramatic all in one episode. she's done the whole luke thing perfectly. i suppose it's the writing too.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

is lauren graham lorelei? if so, she's never struck me as all that attractive until i saw bad santa. it made me want to buy a santa outfit

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the worst show on television.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm inclined to agree.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 8 October 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst show? Wha?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the dialogue makes Joe Buck-Tim McCarver inane baseball banter read like fucking Shakespeare.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't watch much tv do you, hstencil? It's fine if you don't like it, but there's soooooooooooooooooooooooo much more terrible stuff in the tv world.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt win any new friends by telling coworkers i missed a red sox playoff game cause i was catching up on the gilmore girls.

kephm, Friday, 8 October 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My god, you could have at least warned me for spoilers. Anyway, Sparks has come up on the show before, when Rory borrowed cd's from her friend Lane, who appears with some heavy namedropping every time the writers feel they've become a bit lazy on thrilling the indie audience. They do have a nice soundtrack though.

strom (strom), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Not exactly a shock that macho dudes hate the Gilmore Girls.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Not exactly a shock that macho dudes hate the Gilmore Girls.

My experience with the show has been admittedly brief but based on that I wouldn't necessarily *say* I was macho...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

In my experience, there's a lot of different ways that men can have a 'macho' attitude.

I'm not trying to say that there's something wrong with any of you for disliking the show, just that it's not always a surprise when some people dislike it. The show has a very distinct aesthetic, it's definitely an acquired taste for most people.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but you still haven't explained why disliking it is macho!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't say that disliking it was inherantly a macho position. What I said was that it's never a surprise when macho dudes hate it. It's a very girly show.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 8 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, I think the show has been a little weak lately too (I still really like it, but in comparison to how good last season was...), but I chalk it up to weak writing for Lorelai and Luke - I'm still way into the Rory stuff, especially when Emily and Richard are involved.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

Luke's "new" daughter is like someone backscripted a "quirkier" Rory -- not the worst idea, but she's basically Olivia to Rory's Rudy Huxtable!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I made my wife keep
this on DVR to see
Ms. Sherilyn Fenn

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Also she's a little too explicitly modeled on quirky girls from young-adult novels, which could start to grate as soon as there's an Anastasia Krupnik reference.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

(xxp) Hahaha.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

sherilyn looked so great and she's also become a much better actress than she was fifteen years ago.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

she reminded me of an old girlfriend of mine who i still see around occasionally. it was spooky.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

I said "no, um, SUKIE's fat"
my wife rolled her eyes

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, that was Sherilyn Fenn??

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

This is my favorite show even though there's tons about it I don't like (like the Northern Exposure-esque wackiness of Stars Hollow) and I'd never seen it until last spring when I randomly happened upon re-runs on ABC Family (after The 700 Club?!?) while on paternity leave with my daughter. The whole having a daughter thing is much more meaningful to my being a sucker for the show than being a music fan (though, like Matthew said, I think most of the music stuff is totally in character).

Best part of the show, which hasn't been mentioned at all on this thread, I think, is the Lorelai/Emily relationship. I'm not crazy about the direction the show is headed in the last couple of new episodes (Rory and Loralei forced, subpar banter, Luke's kid), but hope it'll get back on track when they work the Richard and Emily drama back in.

I'm done now.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

The episode after next is going to be nothing but one long super-tense Friday Night Dinner. I can't imagine that not ruling.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Fenn-mole in full effect. Apparently she was going to play "a surrogate mother on Sherman-Palladino’s aborted WB spinoff about Luke Danes’ nephew Jess Mariano?"

Start a pool, dudes: how long til the show does some kind of meta reference where Madchen Amick comes back into town and meets Fenn and through some series of wacky hi-jinks Luke needs to use them to serve coffee and pie at his restaurant (for Stars Hollow Coffe and Pie Day), and then suddenly Kirk comes along in a black suit talking to a tape recorder and Mrs. Kim inherits a sawmill and ...

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

Fenn-mole in full effect. Apparently she was going to play "a surrogate mother on Sherman-Palladino’s aborted WB spinoff about Luke Danes’ nephew Jess Mariano?

--

Wait a minute? Was that her who played Jess' Dad's wife on the episode where Jess went to California? And was that episode supposed to be setting up the spin-off?

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Gilmore Girls" playing "Anna Nardini" in episode: "Just Like Gwen and Gavin" (episode # 6.12) 17 January 2006

"Gilmore Girls" playing "Sasha" in episode: "Here Comes the Son" (episode # 3.21) 13 May 2003

It WAS her. She's been both Jess' "stepmom" AND Luke's babymama on Gilmore Girls.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

But she was blonde the first time. Now she's not. See?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

That Jess going to California episode seemed really odd, but with the revelation that they were trying to set-up a spinoff it all makes sense.

That Fenn has played two characters on the show just enhances the Twin Peaksyness, though.

Jess (whoever the actor is) is in some straight-to-DVD "teen sex comedy" I got a press release about.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 13 January 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Worst commentary I've heard:
"I don't watch Gilmore Girls because there's not enough hott people on it."

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Friday, 13 January 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

1. No one has mentioned the extended Brian Jonestown Massacre / Dig! tribute from November? (Including a guest appearance by Joel Gion, a near-word-for-word re-enactment of the disasterous showcase scene, and a description of one baby as the Dandy Warhols to her brother's BJM.) They spent 10 minutes+ of airtime setting up and executing a joke that went over the heads of 90% of the audience. I had to explain it to a room full of 14-year-olds.

2. I surmise Alexis Bledel is soon to become an intermittant guest, to be replaced by Luke's suddenly acquired tween bio-daughter. Bledel seems bored with herself and the show. Lane can stick around to teach Rory 2.0 the suburban-hipster-reference ropes.

3. Lauren Graham/Laurelai is a MILF, but if there were a real person who engaged in her clueless, indiscriminate, obsessive, logorrheic flirtation, I might strangle her (if others didn't do it first). Occasionally, that interferes with my enjoyment of the show.

Vornado, Friday, 13 January 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

It WAS her. She's been both Jess' "stepmom" AND Luke's babymama on Gilmore Girls.

This is worse than Bill Maher playing two different shirtless hunks in successive seasons of Murder, She Wrote.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 January 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

man, like all of my least favorite bands on my favorite show. was that sonic youth's kid? yo la tengo were clearly the worst thing ever.

keyth (keyth), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I tuned in to catch a glimpse of Sonic Youth, but couldn't sit through the dialogue. Ugh

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

wow this show is an abomination.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Youth's thing was the best ever! They should perform like that IRL.

And you kinda need to watch it a few times before you get into it...

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

The first singer, the blonde woman, looked familiar, but I don't know if she's an actual singer or someone I saw on TV.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

that was mary lynn rajskub, from mr show and 24.

also all you haters can eat it -- this episode was amazing (although you'd probably need at least one more episode of context to realize what you all were seeing)

Didn't I see Sam Phillips on there tonight?

Redd Temple Player (TowHeaded O.G.) (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

yes. she does all the incidental music for the show as well (you probably knew that)

I thought this episode sucked though, that ending was ridiculous, it was like the pallodinos kiss off to the fans. at least they didn't cram april in there.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

haha kyle have you never been a slightly tipsy person on a relationship brink? because seriously, i could totally relate.

ms. bad ideas at times, probably, given the post i'm making right now (maura), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

it would have been nice for the pallodino's final show to have had more than one scene with rory and lorelai together, is all.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think they knew it was going to be their last scene when it was being written, no?

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Sam Phillips was all I saw (goddamn F train) -- she scores the series, yeah? and does Ch 11 NYC rerun it on the weekend?

Never seen the show, and based on 5 minutes, no regrets.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I hate the way they crammed all the important stuff into the last five minutes (they did that a lot this season) and the musical guests were pure pointless filler. But at least there was minimal Kirk. Anyway, that ending was sort of the ending I've been hoping for all along. But I'm not gonna watch next season. When the creators walk, the audience should too. I made that mistake with The West Wing and now I'm gonna watch Sunday night's series finale with a spirit of "Shit, thank God that's finally done."

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

considering how much ASP has sucked in terms of writing this season, im more inclined to watch next season. im totally fed up with 30 minutes of fodder followed by 10-15 minutes of actual plot advancement.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

The editing in this episode was really nice, esp toward the end.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's been a real bad season, and this was with the Palladinos on. I don't have any particular confidence in the new guy, but I'll give it a shot.

I had no particular "oooh!" reaction to the episode, but maybe this is because the ending had been friggin spoiled all over the place, to the point where you could even guess it from the fucking commercials.

Nowhere near enough Gil / Lane. They should get their own spinoff, seriously.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

its not that I couldn't follow what was going on (gimme a break, its a soap opera!) or needed to "get into it" its that the writing is so atrociously forced and suffocating - it plays like its written by hermetically-sealed super-queenyy drama nerds. Thank god it was occasionally broken up by musical non-sequiturs (most of which were all pretty "meh" but at least they didn't involve self-absorbed idiots constantly talking past each other as quickly as possible).

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently D. Palladino was one of the troubadours also? I thought I saw his name as I watched the credits. It was sort of surreal seeing all those relatively big name musicians in Stars Hollow. I'm interested in seeing where the show goes. Lauren Graham is a genius, and I will defintely tune in to see how she fares next year. They had her do a money scene with a dog and she brought it home. I was glad she finally stood up for herself with Luke but suprised to find her in bed with Christopher. I could care less about Alexis Bledel at this point--they have run Rory's character into the ground.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 11 May 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

the writing is so atrociously forced and suffocating - it plays like its written by hermetically-sealed super-queenyy drama nerds

Read thread above for some thoughts on why this is sort of the whole point: as a criticism (and a perfectly valid one, if you're not into that) it's a bit like saying "I hate Hal Hartley movies, everyone talks like they're reading."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 11 May 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

But maybe the real problem for me is that it's not bad *enough*... like, it's not so trashy that I can enjoy it in a kitschy sort-of way

Ah whatever!

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

do you people say the same thing about whit stillman movies (I think this show is better than his movies, though. or at least more enjoyable because I don't hate everyone on the show)?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

this thread has actually clarified for me that when I'm liking Gilmore Girls, I'm liking the same thing I like about Hartley and Stillman movies. (I probably should have seen this ages ago, but I think I was blinded by gender.) and there's the Chris Eigemann connection with Stillman.
