Xtina. "Dirrty."

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 16 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Celine Dion. "That's The Way Love Is". Not one of her gooey, over-melisma-ed ballads, but an R&B-lite number written by Max Martin. It's the only song of hers that doesn't make me run screaming from the room.

"That's the Way It Is" -- Tantrum is totally OTM. In fact, this was the subject of one of my first blog entries (20/03/2000):

I can scarcely believe that I am about to write this, but "That's the Way It Is" is surely the best Celine Dion song ever. Nobody can dispute the fact that she has a wonderful voice, but when she uses it to peddle the inane sappiness of "My Heart Will Go On" it makes me cringe the way Whitney Houston once did with "I Will Always Love You". Celine has rediscovered the dance pop side that she abandoned sometime in 1995, just in time to compete with the Jessicas and Christinas of the world.

Eh, she never did become competition for Xtina, did she?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 16 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's inevitable that someone will write X=Britney Y=Toxic, so I'll preempt them and write it myself even though it's bullshit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 16 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it IS bullshit. y could be equal to so many things.

"Toxic" is the worst thing Britney has ever done.

However, speaking about Britney, the Britney's and Christina's of the 80s are certainly begging for attention here, I mean:

'"Toxic" is the worst thing Britney has ever done.'

You really DO hate the funk, Geir.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 17 October 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get why Belle and Sebastian haters always say they like "Electronic Renaissance". It's just like the other songs but with a bunch of goofy FX.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Sunday, 17 October 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah yeah yeah's, "maps"

I could never understand all the "Maps" love. People treat it like some exquisite pop genius moment. It always struck me as a half-finished song with a placeholder instrumental break. If you like your Yeah Yeah Yeahs melodic, then "Y Control" would probably be a better candidate...

That said: Trent Reznor / Head Like a Hole.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 17 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i disagree. i'd heard and enjoyed it many times before finding out it was B&S. and "tigermilk" is the only B&S album i don't have.

then "Y Control" would probably be a better candidate...

god, no.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Sunday, 17 October 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I have news for you - this simply means you like Regina Spektor.

No way. It sounds like a strokes song except for the female voice. She definitely makes it better, but can't take credit for the whole track. Julian helps- "You don't have to tell noone cause noone wants to know" is a great line.

Magic City (ano ano), Sunday, 17 October 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, regina is basically just texture on that track (regina spektor solo sounds little like the strokes. and it's awful)

i'd have thought alba would like "someday", at least. it seems like an alba song.

ILXing whilst high...

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Sunday, 17 October 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It occures to me that some people on thread are stating bands they like, and saying which song even haters should love, while others are stating bands that they hate except for this one song. Hard to know which is which if nobody says so.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the ambiguity.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

but would the resulting answers be wildly different?

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm guessing the majority of nominations aren't by people who hate the act concerned)

x-post - I don't know, it's an interesting question.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't it be great if the Yeah Yeah Yeah's made an album that sounded like Maps? You know, instead of having one that sounds like shit except for one track.

Mickey, Monday, 18 October 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really, because then I'd want to listen to it.

It's much easier to be a hatah.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hard to know which is which if nobody says so.

see, in alba's case i wrongly assumed yr latter proposition. i suppose this is because i know how much ilm loves telling ilm how much they hate things.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I do?

I have made snide remarks about the Strokes before, but only when the prospect of them winning the 2000-4 poll was raised.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a bit harsh on Otis Redding. Swap Otis Redding with Stax/Volt. Just because Otis Redding has made that one and only good Stax/Volt recording doesn't make it fair to let my hatred centre around him.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i didn't mean to say *you* do this snide stuff alba, i was just talking about ilm's, uhm, general like of stating its dislikes that made me read the thread in a certain way (before you even arrived on it) (maybe it was jim's opening 'maps' post that did it, cos it's such a common sentiment round here) (one that i'd kinda share even) (now it sounds like i'm calling jim petty or something, which i'm not.)(i give up).

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the yeah yeah yeahs, generally..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 18 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

To clarify, it matters not whether 'you' the ILXer hates them or loves them. Its more an acknowledgement of the act that polarises opinion oe way or the other, having a track that is universally loved or respected.

(What would be the Momus one? 'Nicky' or 'hairstyle'?)

'A Complete History Of Sexual Jealousy (parts 17-24)' , I think, if anything. But I think nothing.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I pulled this one out on Tim Finney once. I said he might not really like Jimi Hendrix but it would be shocking if he didn't adore "Pali Gap."

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Monday, 18 October 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Belle & Sebastian too, but love "Step Into My Office, Baby". I guess because it doesn't sound like them.

darin (darin), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'll bet you own all of their CDs except "Dear Catastrophe Waitress", right?

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope. Just that ep.

darin (darin), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, I thought I discovered a new pathology.

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, regina is basically just texture on that track (regina spektor solo sounds little like the strokes. and it's awful)

Yeah but isn't it, like, HER SONG?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Darin -

Have you tried 'Stay Loose', 'Your Cover's Blown' or 'Don't Leave The Light On, Baby'?

It's easy to get on an evangelical kick when you see a chink in a hater's armour.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba,

I honestly don't know if I've heard all of those tracks or not - which album(s) are they on? Maybe I don't really "hate" B&S (I actually really admire their arrangements on a few songs), but usually their vocal melodies and lyrics rub me the wrong way.

darin (darin), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

'Stay Loose' is on the last album. 'Your Cover's Blown' is on the last EP. 'Don't Leave The Light On Baby' is on Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant.

I just chose those three because they're all a) atypical of what people think of Belle & Sebastian and b) great.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the tip - I'll check 'em out.

darin (darin), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Darin won't like them. I've tried to convert him. Same with Spiritualized.

Oddly enough I like B&S, but hate "Step Into My Office Baby" (and the entire new album in fact!)

I thought it was 'Sunday Morning'! I'm just guessing though - I haven't actually ever met anyone who told me they hated the Velvet Underground. Unless you count Bruno Brookes, who I didn't actually meet and didn't actually say hated them, but he said how boring 'Perfect Day' was once on the radio, when h9is co-host Jackie (Jakkii?) Brambles played it.
