I really like Void, and Code of Honor are pretty rad but I don't know that particular song. Void were probably the best band on Dischord in the eighties.

No Black Flag? No Misfits? No Minor Threat?

I doubt the point of the comp was to collect songs that hardcore fans have heard a bazillion times already. It's definitely more in the vein of "good obscure shit that's never been reissued." (though, of course, some of it has. but most of it sits in parents' basements, dusty and waterdamaged.)

More like obscuria and rareities than "classics", but Void, Code of Honor, Heart Attack (Jesse Malin's first band) and the Necros would definetely count as classics in my book.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 31 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking "Why don't I recognise any of these?" then did, and realised that it wasn't the kind of hardcore I was thinking of...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 31 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, the "wrong kind" of hardcore for me too.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 31 October 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 31 October 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe it works this way.

"Hardcore" in the US: Faster, harder branch of Punk Rock that thrived in the early 80's, spearheaded by bands like the Bad Brains, Black Flag, Minor Threat and the Circle Jerks, etc/

"Hardcore" in the UK: A more intense form of house music?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 31 October 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

UK hardcore:

Old skool hardcore:

"Hardcore" in the '70s = Hardcore Porn
"Hardcore" in the '80s = Hardcore Punk
"Hardcore" in the '90s = Hardore Techno

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Sunday, 31 October 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to the more famous folks (Void, etc.) on that list . . .

The Septic Death song "Terrorrain" was on that Pushead compilation "Cleanse The Bacteria" back in the day. Which makes sense because Pushead was in Septic Death, right?

F. O. D. and Decry I recall from some other comps, I think maybe a Flipside mag one.

I think The Freeze were from Boston and were okay.

When I lived in England in 1992 and told people I was "into hardcore" things got quite confusing, they meant Acen and I meant Battalion of Saints.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 1 November 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

pushead was in septic death, yeah.

anyone like YDI? c'mon! YDI!!!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 1 November 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Shit, I just noticed. . .

"Malignant Growth- "Killing Time"-

Fuck Yeah! Malignant Growth were THE great first generation Louisivlle, Kentucky hardcore band (as opposed to the Endtables were awesome but who were early enough to be punk proper) and that song is a total classic. It was on a compilation called The Mastertape which is quite expensive nowadays, I bought a copy at Epicenter for mucho buxxx. The comp is awesome, it has The Repellents on it too.

Sigh . . . those were the days.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a thread floating around here somewhere talking about "Britcore" (ie early 90s proto-jungle I think) which confused me quite a lot, as this normally means Napalm Death, Heresy etc etc

DJ Mencap0))), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah there are too many sub-genres with "core" as a suffix.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

thoughts its always fun say "this" or "that" core or thisorthatcore.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 1 November 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

cor!core-core.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 1 November 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I just noticed Channel 3 (CH3) are also on that list, and they were great for a while (though I'd sooner cite "Catholic Boy" than "Double Standard Boys").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Deep Wound is pre-DINOSAUR/Dinosaur Jr.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think some of them tunes are on Killed By Hardcore, the recent comp inevitable followup to Killed By Death.

Drew Daniel, Monday, 1 November 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

POX: Your own Hardcore Classics (as in 80's US Punk, not UK dance music)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

What with the inclusion of the Stupids and Italian stuff like Negazionne, I'm guessing this was put together by someone somewhere in Yurp. Ripcord is a familiar name too - were they part of the whole UK trash scene?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yurp

hahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, late 80s types. I think the Stupids and lots of Italian bands had a certain cachet in the States, though (one of the Stupids moved to California and did a record on BYO under the name That's It) so it's not cut and shut

DJ Mencap0))), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone have any recommendations for good hc comps along the lines of "flex your head" or "this is boston not la"? especially if they're still in print, since i don't have a fast enough internet connection to use soulseek.

Matt B. (Matt B.), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, one of The Stupids became Klute, the jungle producer.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was Tommy Stupid I think!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it was, the drummer. Much better records as Klute than the Stupids ever managed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

My faves were Let Them Eat Jellybeans, Rat Music for Rat People, the Flipside Variations and Not So Quiet on the Eastern Front.

"Hardcore" in the '70s = Hardcore Porn
"Hardcore" in the '80s = Hardcore Punk
"Hardcore" in the '90s = Hardore Techno

what about hardcore rap? early '90s hardcore might've meant the geto boys or somethin' like that.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Slammies -- Indianapolis-based, I think. Great band. I remember the song "Frustrated" from seing them a few times with the Zero Boys circa 81-82, but I had NO IDEA they ever made a record of any kind. So it must be pretty obscure, then.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ten years pass...

hmm so Wehrmacht's "Shark Attack" is rather one dimensional but a fun fucking burst of energy (outside of the unfortunate band name).......what else is like this

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 03:41 (ten years ago)

Have you heard Cryptic Slaughter's "Convicted"?
