im divided between whether its a bit pointless or if its great drunken, suspended in slow mo-surrealism.

Dud because of me wasting 20 quid on an import copy of what I thought was the Geto Boys' Greatest Hits, only to wonder if I'd got a mispressed CD, before some kindly ILM-ers advised me that, no, it really is meant to sound like that.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

...so destroy the Geto Boys one, at least because that was only CD I could find by them and it was so preposterously overpriced!

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never really known what this meant or was about! apparently David Banner's 'Mississippi' album was the first to get this treatment. how many other releases come in thie form now?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

all it seems to be is slowed down songs, as if theyre being played on a turntable with the pitch at -20. i was a bit dissapointed the first time i heard what chopped and screwed was all about.

steve, chopped and screwed is a whole remix genre/phenom that tons of other southern rap albums have been subjected, i mean treated, to. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. i think its a working to not working ratio of 1:486943636.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

so if you were to suggest five i should download, what would they be?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

get C&S albums by lil jon (although this is a lazy effort to me), three 6 mafia, the classics: chopped and screwed by the swisha house, 8ball and MJG - living legends: chopped and screwed, UGK. theres probably better ones but i havent heard them all.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Who HAS heard them all? Seriously, pretty much every single rap album released gets chopped and screwed. They may be hard to find (and thank God for that), but it's still happening. There's a new one pretty much every single day.

Mickey, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

its mainly a dirty south thing though i'd say - i dont see any C&S versions of jadakiss or whoever.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This just means playing the music at a lower speed, or is there more to it? I mean... why would you pay for that?

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not just slowing it down...some of the remixes (Swisha esp., also Choppaholix) really boost up some details and tamp down others. And chopping imparts an emphasis on the two and three, which is alien-sounding and freaky and habit forming.

Also, I think that Michael Watts' work on both Banner albums re-orders things so that the records flow better and make more sense.

Oh Shit, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, the dynamic of ILM has really changed.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, this is crazy. The screwed and chopped Banner albums are great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Chamillionaire one, it lets you savor the rhymes a bit more.

Drew Daniel, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There are some great singles obviously (i.e. doesn't have to be whole albums). I listen to the screwed version of "Sippin on Some Syrup" all the time!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Has this been done with non-hip hop songs?

Pangolino again, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck eddy reviewed some guy that did this to rock songs in the voice. forget his name. i'd love to hear it.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

here's another chance to say that the s&c version of ugk's "one day" is the greatest thing ever

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely get the banner ones, steve.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed, and seconded on three six mafia.
C+S can really improve some music. The baby bash c+D is kinda fun.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a tribute to DJ screw on damage control radio tonight. It was pretty cool. The best is when they played "Southside Groovin." Anyway Serg recorded it and we'll put an mp3 of the show up on our blog. I'll make a new thread about it I guess. You guys should listen to Damage Control regularly, its on every wednesday. Next week is a tribute to soulja slim.

Lil Wayne's screwed and chopped record makes him sound like he actually hit puberty at some point.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Get the Three 6 Mafia album 'Da Unbreakables' screwed and chopped - it's better than the original. Much more menacing.

Also, Devin's 'The Briar Patch' becomes a slow-motion lullaby when screwed.

Someone did a screwed version of Roots Manuva's 'Witness' but I can't find the link any more. Pretty dope.

Yeah i have this, one of my favorite albums of the year. Shit is psychadelic.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 19 November 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Screwed & Chopped was invented last year by David banner. It's really experimenta. I can't wait to see if it becomes a new pop phenomonon, perhaps we'll soon hear a Britney spears screwed & chopped pop single!!!

scg, Friday, 19 November 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 19 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I'm listening right now to a chopped and screwed version of Dr. Dre's 2001 - it's INCREDIBLE! Has anyone else heard any of these tracks?

stingewell, Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

ummm... i still don't understand this concept.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

It's drug music, which means it usually sounds like shit to sober minds.

Thread of intense and hilarious cluelessness.

Devin's Greatest Hits Chopped and Screwed is an all-time classic btw, but I guess it ought to be.

Disappointed that I can't find a chopped and screwed "Humpty Dance", though there is one on YouTube for "Sex Packets."
