OFFICIAL THREAD FOR 2004 ALBUMS & SONGS POLL

Rules and regulations (all of which are flexible) to come in a minute.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, first off, this poll will be for three things--albums, songs, and compilations. You don't have to vote for all of them to vote for one or two of them, it's up to you. Lists should be sent to me at fadeout95@gmail.com.

ELIGIBILITY:

Albums:

Album elligibility will be treated very leniently--albums from late last year that didn't get their due until this year, or weren't released in your country until this year, or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year, will all count. The only thing I ask is that you don't include any albums that already made their rounds on a good number of year-end polls last year--check Acclaimed Music if you have any questions and see if an album is featured prominently on the 2003 lists.

Songs:

If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible. If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year (i.e. Jay-Z's "99 Problems), it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year (i.e. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" in the U.S. or Khia's "My Neck, My Back" in the U.K.), it is eligible. A song is not eligible, however, if it appeared on a compilation for the first time this year but was already available previously (i.e. LCD Soundsystem's "Beat Connection," which was already widely known before being on DFA Comp #2).

Compilations:

Any sort of band compilation, best-of or miscellaneous (i.e. This is Music or Beehives) is elligible, as are label comps (Kompakt 100), genre comps (Left of the Dial) and DJ mixes, of both old and new (Unclassics and Daddy G's DJ Kicks). Re-issues are eligible as well, but only if they substantially expand upon the original album, so the two-disc re-issue of Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain would be elligible, but not the unchanged re-issue of Disco Inferno's D.I. Go Pop.

Votes/Scoring:

You'll be voting for a maximum of 20 albums, 20 songs, and 10 compilations. You can also submit lists for 10 albums, 10 songs or 5 compilations, but they will be scored on a lower scale. The compilations, for instance, will be as such for a list of 10:

#1--25 votes
#2--19 votes
#3--16 votes
#4--14 votes
#5--12 votes
...
#10--2 votes

but for a list of five, it'd be like:

#1--25 votes
#2--16 votes
#3--12 Votes
#4--8 Votes
#5--4 Votes

Lists must be of either 20 or 10 (or 5, in the case of the comps). Lists of 13 will have the bottom three chopped, etc. Too difficult to score.

This part is subject to change if people don't like it. I think it works well.

BLURBS:

I'd like to get a substantial number of blurbs for this, even if not every album is covered--I think it'd be a lot more enjoyable to read or whatever. So what I'd like you all to do is that when you vote, put a star or something next to albums you'd be willing to write a small blurb for (or a large one, if you feel like getting all deep). If you're cool with writing a blurb for anything, you godlike human being, just make a note of that somewhere. If you don't want to write blurbs, then that's fine, your list won't count for less or anything. Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.

DEADLINES:

Deadline for lists: December 15
Deadline for blurbs: December 20

That's about three weeks to put your list together, I think that's enough time. If you all need more time, I can give you some, but not too much lest the list run into the new year.

IN THIS THREAD:

I'd appreciate it if people didn't post their lists in this, or any other thread. If people disagree with me than OK, but I think that the exit polling that took place with the 90s polls sorta killed some of the mystery about the poll, and I think it'd be better going in without knowing exactly what everyone voted for.

However, what I do encourage in this thread, is some serious pimping. Three weeks is a long time, and I know that I at least would love some suggestions of albums or songs that I might have missed that I can download before sending in my list. Don't post too many as to not overwhelm people with suggestions, but if there are a couple songs, comps or albums that people feel have gone underrecognized, then by all means, recommend away--bonus points for Yousendit links!

Also in this thread, if you have any questions regarding eligibility or any suggestions regarding eligibility or voting, I'd be happy to take them.

That's all (ha!). Hope you managed to get through all of this and hope you guys are going to enjoy this poll as much as I will.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 26 November 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year
Dumb question: what about leaked albums that aren't released until early next year?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No good because people will inevitably vote for them next year and (rightly) complain about them being inelligible because they were voted for this year.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I recommend using Microsoft Excel when tallying votes! it came in rather handy for me.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, absolutely--last year I did one of these polls using pen-and-paper, man was that painful. I don't know if I can ever go back to that again.

Also, DJ's post reminds me of another point: All votes for remixes on the songs poll will just go towards the original song. So if someone votes for "What You Waiting For?" and someone else votes for the Lu Cont remix, they'll be counted towards the same song. And if it makes the poll, I'll note how many of the votes were for the remix. So, you can't vote for two versions of the same song, just choose the one you like best and vote for that.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the scoring system for a list of 20?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Why has no-one ever told me about Acclaimed Music before? All those lists.... it's.... it's.... [gasp] it's really quite beautiful!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what? compilations don't count as albums? remixes don't count as different songs? this is crazy!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think compilations counting as compilations makes a good deal of sense, no? And voting for remixes in conjunction with the regular songs will just get too confusing. When a remix is important though, it'll definitely be duly noted.

What's the scoring system for a list of 20?

#1=25
#2=20
#3=18
#4=17
#5=16
...
#20=1

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack would count for comps, correct?

The Evil Dr. Bill (inabillity), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not quite sure if I'm actually supposed to answer that.

But yes.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, in case this wasn't clear from my first post, if you're voting for re-issues you should be voting based on the quality of the re-issue, not the quality of the re-issued album. So if you're voting for Ready to Die, it should be for the few bonus tracks, liner notes and the bonus DVD, not because you love the original album.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit weird mixing up DJ mixes with some hoary old remastered outtakes job.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird is not the word. Compilations should be V/A only.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I would so love to see Misc "Rocket Kontrol" do well in this, but it being a limited edition 12" kind of defeats the object of wishing it well.

I will have to think of some things people actually know!

3underscore (___), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

I wanted to make it clear to remind people that they can (and should) vote for it. Will be released only two weeks before the deadline, but it's leaked already. Check the Tracklist.

bill neil (inabillity), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

alright. let me briefly reiterate previuos album pimping.

  • if you like vitalic and /or electrohouse, please listen to richard bartz: midnight man!

  • if you like drexciya in gliding translusion / other people place mode, please listen to raiders of the lost arp : 4!

  • if you like blissfully pilled-up drum & bass that smells of cinnamon & apples, please listen to high contrast: high society!

  • if you like rough elektro with a k (that is slightly gay), please listen to david carretta - kill your radio!

  • if you like autechres inhuman coldness but dislike handle their beatwizardry, please listen to der zyklus: biometry!

  • :| (....), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

    -handle.

    :| (....), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I would so love to see Misc "Rocket Kontrol" do well in this, but it being a limited edition 12" kind of defeats the object of wishing it well.

It's also available on their excellent, not limited at all CD.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Will there really be enough single artist re-issues "that substantially expand upon the original album" to make including them in a poll a worthwhile exercise? I think I agree with RickyT, basically.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

:| with some ace recommendations. i will second raiders of the lost arp, der zyklus, and high contrast. i haven't heard the other two, but i will definitely check them out.

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, with one-artist compilations, you should be more considering the skill with which the compilation was put together than the actual songs themselves, obv.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the compilations should be just that non-mixed compilations from this year (have a separate section for reissues, either stuff released on CD for the first time or released in a substantially different version.) I'd hate to see something like the MIA mix get aced out by vote splitting.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I just don't give a toss about ranking expanded reissues, and that's my problem.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, with one-artist compilations, you should be more considering the skill with which the compilation was put together than the actual songs themselves, obv.

    This is 'obv.'?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anybody wants to see the reissued "London Calling" or "Crooked Rain" winning the comps poll.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know whether I should vote for "What You Waiting For" original or remix. They're both great, but I don't want votes to be split.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

    they won't be split

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

GWEN STEFANI - WHAT YOU WAITING FOR (JACQUES LE CONT REMIX)

this is a completely formulaic lu cont remix (ie. it's great), but the lyrics to the song are pretty bad.

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you mean? "Tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock what you waiting, what you waiting, what you waiting for?" is pretty much all one needs in a lyric.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the "tick-tock" part! it's the rest of the lyrics that are craptacular. being a pop star is so hard and stuff!!!!

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't really paid much attention to them. They sound OK if you don't try to think what they're about, I guess.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Will there really be enough single artist re-issues "that substantially expand upon the original album" to make including them in a poll a worthwhile exercise? I think I agree with RickyT, basically.

I don't see why not. There were a real good number of two-disc re-issues of classic 10th anniversary albums this year.

    This is 'obv.'?

I thought so. Neil Young's new one-disc hits album, for example, would obviously be great just taken as the songs alone, but when considering the breadth of his career, his previous history of comps, inclusions and exclusions, etc., then it might not be so classic.

I don't know whether I should vote for "What You Waiting For" original or remix. They're both great, but I don't want votes to be split.

This, Sanjay and others, is exactly why remixes and originals are going to be counted as the same song. So don't worry which one you vote for, it's all going to the same place. No vote-splitting.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the "tick-tock" part! it's the rest of the lyrics that are craptacular.

Uh, hello, TAKE A CHANCE YOU STUPID HO. That is the lyrical pinnacle of "What You Waiting For?", obv.

My brain is teh drunk but I have reread this thread several times and am still not sure I understand. Can someone confirm that the MIA vs Diplo mix is an album not a compilation?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Bill - it's just all a bit Mojo for me, thinking about giving prizes for reissue values. I mean, that's fine, if that's what you're into - but it would seem kind of meaningless to rank those kind of qualities against a good DJ mix.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex - I guess it's a kind of mix of (mostly) one artist. So err - I dunno.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

See this is why the compilation category is stupid. Just have albums and singles and leave it at that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all very clear Bill. stop nitpicking - as you said Alba, it doesnt really matter.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

    Hurrah for Bill!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

    : )

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll leave the comps section alone - I don't see how I can rank V.A. comps against mixes against reissues with bonus tracks in any way that would make any sense to me. Weirdly, I'm not sure I know twenty new albums this year that I really want to vote for, which disturbs me rather. I've been buying a lot more old stuff than new.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, sorry, I obv. didn't see the part about remixes.

Another question I hope hasn't already been answered: can we vote for "compilations" in the general album category, too? (Like pitchers who get votes for MVP?)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I reading this right - if I think there are only ten songs worth voting for this year, my #10 gets fewer points (2) than if I put it 10 out of 20 (10)?

If people vote strategically, doesn't that mean ten filler tracks will receive votes just to bump up the ones they actually care about? (This is all much more applicable to albums)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is beyond confusing. Or maybe I'm just stupid.
But I honestly don't see how a remix and the original can count as the same vote! There are so many remixes where the remix absolutely destroys the original...or where they might as well be entirely different songs.

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 27 November 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I reading this right - if I think there are only ten songs worth voting for this year, my #10 gets fewer points (2) than if I put it 10 out of 20 (10)?
That's the incentive to get you to vote for 20 albums/songs, instead of 10.

Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.
    ....
    Deadline for lists: December 15
    Deadline for blurbs: December 20

Just to clarify one more thing ... I assume the list will need to be tabulated right away, so we'll likely get the blurb requests on the 16th, giving us four days to complete them, yes?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

But I honestly don't see how a remix and the original can count as the same vote! There are so many remixes where the remix absolutely destroys the original...or where they might as well be entirely different songs.

Or how about how the Andreas Churchill remix of "What You Waiting For" is stupid and boring, even though the original song and the LuCont remix are both great!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(I actually don't care; I just wanted to make that point!)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be an ILM pollmaster for all the world. Respect to you, Dr. Bill.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

    haha, thanks.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost had my singles together but then i noticed i had forgotten 99 problems. dont let this happen to you.
    also, rubicon.

    :| (....), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

    Did you send it?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost did, but i thought the better of it after this shock moment. surely people arent through pimpign their favouites yet?

    :| (....), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I've barely thought about it yet. BELIEVE ME THERE'LL BE PIMPING.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had voted as many times as I do on ILX, Kerry would have won.

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Alicia Keys - "You Don't Know My Name (Reggae Remix)"

Turns the weighty melodrama of the original into one of the bounciest and most heartbreaking songs of the year. Fabulous stuff.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Could someone yousendit her single "Karma"? Every time I try to get it on the bluebird it crashes my computer w/ too many results.

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose there's no point nominating the original 'Heartbeats' as everyone seem to prefer the remix

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha, hang on, i've got this wrong

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah - votes for all mixes get combined then Bill makes mention of the favoured ones.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose there's no point nominating the original 'Heartbeats' as everyone seem to prefer the remix

Was the remix on the single? I haven't found it anywhere, and I've looked.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba when was the exact moment that our tastes converged so thoroughly?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha - I just copied you, Tim.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

hobart paving - yes, it's on my 12" of it anyway.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm suspicious of the lack of R&B on my list - I suspect I haven't been hearing the right things in that area this year.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba I'm interested to know how you feel about the conflict you described in your elephants thread in light of the stuff you seem to be into of late. Stuff like the "Durch Die Nacht" remix or Superpitcher generally seems to perfectly dissolve or skirt past it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - I'd forgotten my elephants. I'll get back to you on that one, Tim.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

13 days left. I've only gotten about five lists.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm desperately trying to get hold of albums I think I might want to vote for.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

    I'll be voting soon, Bill.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the elephants thing is occupying my mind.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, I'd like to note that I find preferring the RTD version of "Heartbeats" to the original is slightly nutty.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Question: Does a track redone this year count on the songs list?

danh (danh), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

    example.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

    Smile stuff

danh (danh), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

    oooh, tough one.

Yeah, go for it, but just don't put "Good Vibrations" as #1 just 'coz it's "Good Vibrations," y'know?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's one I've been struggling with too - I can just about assess Smile as a new album, but I'm finding it very hard to think of slightly different versions of Good Vibrations and Heroes And Villains as 2004 tracks.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

    works for me.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

    bounce to the top.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

And again. Incidentally, most English people don't come back holidays till tomorrow, and most Scots not till Wednesday. Don't know what the situation is in other countries. Just wondered if for that reason, a further two day extension might make a difference to number of votes cast. But understand that you're probably fed up with postponements.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I'll try to be lenient with last-last-minute shit. I don't want to extend too much longer because I think the board's tolerance for year-end lists will be running on empty by late January (especially if I still need time to assign blurbs, which I may or may not be doing)
