Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:04 (twenty years ago)

you have mine! i just wish i could be there. SAD FACE NOW.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago)

tracks that got the best response on Geeta's birthday:
Annie - "Chewing Gum"
M.I.A. - "Galang" (via iPod! ...finally got the vinyl now)
any bass/crunk: Lil Jon, Usher, Poison Clan, GhostTown DJs
Sweet Female Attitude (SFA) - "Flowers" (I'd forgotten its instant charm - everyone can't have known it!)

(thanks Steve! it's strongly inspired by the pop/dance love of ILXers like you)

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago)

biggup JaXoN, coiner of bubblecrunk!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago)

from that little review, this sounds wicked. really super looking fwd to it now and will drop you an email to firm up plans a little.

stelfox, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

in a way it's an ideal place for ILX people cos we like chatting
and there's both a quieter area (with seats & bar) and a louder dance room
so you can hear the music both places and get your chat & dance on just by walking 25 feet

plus there's some intangible mystery about the bar - it's been the final stop on many a barhop

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Simon's right about the soundsystem - I slagged it off the first time
but last week got the hang of it - and while not exactly a sub-bass stack, delivers MEGAsound anyway

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago)

i like the dilapidated dry aquarium embedded in the wall. nice and sterile.

Beta (abeta), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago)

there's actually fish living in one of them!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
and some salamaders/newts in another

(oi! what happened to the rest of this thread?)

You on this Saturday then? I'll stop by.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha Paul I had completely forgotten about "Botz"!

I just put it on again and I still love it though! Which one did you play though? The one I heard at the rave was "(Organik)" I think, not "(Elektro)" as I mistakenly listed on my blog (verging on five years ago now, and six since the rave!). "(Synthetik)" is great also - the drum programming alone.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

your note on "Botz" reminded me exactly of my own experience - where at first (on the CD E.P.) it sounded like the best thing ever
(the most ear-scouring mix, always have to play it to remember name),
but then couldn't get that feeling again when I found the 12". it does work great in a mix though!

"My Planet" is another breaks track I loved, off the Simply Jeff mix CD, but it took me at least 6 years (!) to find the vinyl. when I played it on New Year's it had mixed reaction (danced continued, but with that "do I like this?" thinning look) and the start of the pleas to "play some old school hip hop again". must have been those trancey builds before the bass returns!

yo paul, do you know/have masters at work's "it's all right, i feel it"?

cathy berberian (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 8 January 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

hi Cathy, not sure, probably not cos I don't have NuYorican Soul album on vinyl
but I do have the absolutely wiLd "Runaway (Armand Van Helden mix)" 12"
also 2 versions of Roy Ayers' "Sweet Tears"
(much prefer his originals to their remake - though do have lots of M.A.W. faves!).

Sorry to piggyback on Paul's thread, but if anyone is around the Lower East Side tonite (sunday) come hear Cat from Fannypack and I DJ this weekly happy hour thing:

VERLAINE
110 Rivington Street (between Essex & Ludlow)
7pm - Midnite

Phil-Two (Tweetron)
Cat Hartwell (Fannypack)

$3 drinks before 10pm, and they make really the city's best bloody marys. and they make yummy vietnamese bar snacks.

sorry everyone - I've had to cancel the Wild FleX night at Orchard Bar

...for several reasons, too involved to go into here,
but the main one is disrespect and lack of support from bar management

I'd prefer if no one holds a grudge against the bar itself, still a sentimental favourite of mine -
and their talented Thursday night DJ Henry runs a fun party

overall, Wild FleX was a bigger success than I could have even expected -
THANKS EVERYONE who participated and supported the night!
and thanks especially to Geeta for helping get me back into this racket

my best times were when the dancers (& listeners) were well into it
and we put over some wild mixes and tracks, tell ya!
anyone who was there KNOWS

ha, I was just getting warmed up!
regret not being able now to feature more DJ talent and range
but Wild FleX and your DJ are not done - we'll be back soon, here, there EVERYWHERE!

keep it raw for 2005 and check for me at guest spot and tings
