Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, sorry I missed this. I was all busting a move at Lowes and Home Depot last night instead. BTW, who did that version of "If I Could Read Your Mind" that you played a couple of weeks ago?

S!monB!rch (Carey), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Spencer, actually I mentioned you last night (to Simon?) when I played Doublestar - "Do Me Right" cos it seemed the perfect kind of sweet 2-step that certain of us ILX'rs like

S!mon, that was Viola Wills. very "Moody"-esque bassline (from 1979?).

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul, I didn't even notice that. Doublestar "Do Me Right" (Sunship mix I think) is one of my all time favorite garage tracks!!! It sounds like it should be on the Bring It On soundtrack or something. Few things make me happier.

IN FACT, few things would make me happier than if you actually have a copy of that mix and can gmail me a high quality mp3 rip!!! I have actually tried to find this for a long time (I only have it on a Twice as Nice comp).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 23 January 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

So many of my favourite things up there. "My Desire" obv but also my other paramour "Madness in the Street" - HARPSICHORD DROP!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 23 January 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that viola wills track is hot shit. good on ya.

Paul Kennedy early evening DJ guest spot
Wednesday Oct 11th 6pm - 10pm,
at DJ Misbehaviour's After Work party FOREPLAY
(for more info on Misbehaviour's great! mix of music see below asterisks line)

club: SIN SIN
85 2nd Ave at 5th St (entrance on 5th St), NEW YORK CITY
(for ground floor SIN SIN go left at entrance -
upstairs is another space called The Leopard Lounge)

FREE admission plus $3 drink specials and 2-for-1 drink specials

music theme: FROM THE MECCA TO THE SAINT

hippest UK northern club the BLACKPOOL MECCA was originally associated with 60's northern soul and New York's spectacular THE SAINT was eventually linked to ever-whiter hi-NRG and euro sounds, but there's a common thread connecting the 2 legendary clubs in the later years of the former and early years of the latter:
soulful/songful DISCO-FUNK (often with a gospel edge),
which overlapped with the music played at classic clubs like the Paradise Garage, The Loft and especially 12 West (The Saint's main NYC precursor).

my set's mostly drawn from the playlists of DJs Ian Levine, Roy Thode and Robbie Leslie, featuring the likes of Viola Wills, Marlena Shaw, producer Frank Wilson, Lamont Dozier, The Montclairs, Lenny Williams,
Alton McClain & Destiny and many other r&b greats
(some of the finest underplayed r&b from roughly 1974-1981).

at 85 2nd Ave, SIN SIN is located just over a block south of the old location (105 2nd Ave at 6th St, originally the Fillmore East) of the one-and-only THE SAINT (1980-1988 R.I.P.).

TOO DEEP FOR SHEEP

DJ MISBEHAVIOUR

Since 1990 Misbehaviour firmly planted her roots within the essence of London's club culture and made her mark at exclusive London venues such as Hanover Grand and Subterania (both winners of the prestigious MOBO Awards for best club). This lead to such exclusive events such as film premiere parties at the Waldorf Hotel and a private party for Prince. In 1996 she launched her own club night 'Rather Unique' in London and Brighton, which played host to the cream of British hip hop, Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Skinnyman, Ty and many more.

Misbehaviour is a passionate collector buying Soul records since she was was 7 and playing classical piano at 8:
"When I started djing, there was no video or very little exposure on radio for a lot of music, DJs had to select and break their own tunes on the dance floor, I already had years of experience listening for the best tunes and coupled with classical training, this gave me an edge. I will always have some unexpected gems in my box whether they are from the past or brand new. I taught myself to mix on turntables to be able to present new tracks to the dance more effectively and soon got a reputation for my mixing skills. My roots as a DJ come from the warehouse party scene, where it was all about getting down and having fun. I love to send people home at the end of a night happy and sweaty! There is no better feeling than that."

Based in NYC, Misbehaviour has performed at venues such as Shine, SOB's, Club Shelter and The Roxy. In the summer is one of the main DJs in Central Park, for the world famous roller-skating disco. After being in New York for only 2 years she promoted her night 'Bubble and Squeak' on Sundays @ APT, with such prestigious guests as DJ Spinna and Evil Dee. A fusion of London and New York vibes, Bubble and Squeak was voted pick of the week in Time Out, Paper Magazine and The New York Post.

Only two words can describe Misbehaviour's style ..............

RATHER UNIQUE

hi paul fav styles are soul/funk rare grooves, jazz funk, a spattering of brazilian/african vibes, some reggae, hip hop, housey/2 step... pretty much anything i feel like, centering around good song melodies and nice rhythms. sometimes i even throw on my post punk shit and two tone. quite hard to describe really...

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 13 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Paul, do you actually have that first mix on mp3? I will pay good money for it!!!

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

which one - the first recent set (from Wednesday's gig) or the first one listed on the thread?

unfortunately I don't have either

at least 6 Mecca tracks of 'set 1' are available on this fantastic comp:
http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/z/zzianlevinepresentsre_101b.jpg

the Bessie Banks and Montclairs tracks are outrageously expensive as original 7"s. the Mel Britt is out of reach as an original.
there's a David Rhodes song on the comp which is unfindable!

some of the tunes I played are a little too earth funk for The Saint - more likely to be heard at The Loft: e.g. "Love From The Sun", "Journey To The Light" & "Cool Me Out".

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

let's talk about Ian Levine's later career as an 80s hi-nrg producer! 12 Inches of Pleasure indeed!

There's a narrative to that, DJ Greg Wilson told me about that when he visited NY. It makes sense, just as you can talk about how the Hacienda DJs from the Rave/madchester acid-house era started in Northern Soul as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 13 October 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

that 1977 Barbara Pennington is one of my fave Levine productions. you can hear the roots of the hi-NRG sound in the octave bassline.

I was tempted to play Evelyn Thomas - "Hi Energy", but it's not under-exposed like many other Saint classics. I also left Phyllis Nelson - "Don't Stop The Train" home and brought - but didn't play Lamont Dozier - "Going Back To My Roots", New Birth - "Deeper" and Narada Michael Walden - "I Shoulda Loved Ya".
Could easily do a much longer set on this theme (Mecca/Loft/Saint).

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 13 October 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

I just want to hear brightly colored 2-step again! Doublestar forever!!!

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Friday, 13 October 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

nine years pass...

wow - 9 years pass just like that!

this thread and its predecessor have helped preserve my ancient setlists (including some tracks I'd completely forgotten about). I'd also later (back in the day) logged several setlists on a MySpace blog, but those are now lost, so when I found this thread again I was tempted to add to it, my personal ILM indulgence...

Paul, Monday, 4 January 2016 00:05 (ten years ago)

10 years ago ILM played a large role in getting me into many tracks that I collected on vinyl and DJ'd with. as did BBC 1XTRA and shops like Juno, Uptown, Blackmarket & Rhythm Division. nowadays RYM (Rate Your Music), discogs, YouTube and blogs play a bigger role.
