1970s POLL

Hello there,

There have been lots of polls on ILM lately but none seem to have been focussed on that groovey, glittery, shouty and often pleasingly camp decade otherwise known as the 70s.

Do you want a 1970s poll? If you don't, please find another thread.

If you DO - here it is.

THE RULES:

You can nominate up to 7 times - either 3 albums, 4 songs or 4 albums, 3 songs. I hope this doesn't turn out to be too many. If it does...well, what the hell, that's life.

Nominations - you have until 30th December. Actually, you'll probably get just a bit longer than this, because I'll forget to check on the correct day, and just let anything else sneak through, but don't rely on my ineptness, get those nominations in NOW!

Voting - We'll worry about that later. I'll set up an e-mail address to send your votes to, should anyone bother to nominate.

I think that's everything, isn't it? Will anyone join in??

NOMINATIONS POSTED TO THIS THREAD PLEASE

FUCK YES

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you should decrease the number of nominations and DEFINITELY limit the # of votes. 30+ was too many.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

NICKALICIOUS USES FIRST VOTE TO NOMINATE THERE'S A RIOT GOIN ON BY SLY AND TEH FAM SURNAME STONE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict Steely Dan will be the St. Etienne of the 1970s poll.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I suggested quite a lot because I was struggling to pick from a list of about 20 of each, just for nominations - but you might be right. How many do you think? What do other people think?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this is fantastic

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 2 of each and 15 or 20 votes is best.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad we've skipped the 80s for the moment - that poll threatened to be a snore.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kind of hoping for 10 singles, 10 albums, but if that's too much, then it's no big deal.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

btw. not that I would necessarily want to, but can the 7 be split any ways (eg. 6 albums, 1 track?) or does it have to be a 3/4 split?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You wanted to nominate 10 of each, or to vote for 10 of each?

If its nominations, that's a big difference of opinion, and perhaps we should stick with 7 - particularly as Chuck has already nominated.

Note to self: This sort of thing is better resolved BEFORE putting up a poll, you fuckhead.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds great, but did I miss the 80's poll?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also think that having a seperate thread entirely for nominations would not be a bad idea.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds great, but did I miss the 80's poll?
Free your chronology and your ass will follow.

jsk baby (jsk baby), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess part of me is just baffled as to why if we are going to have that many nominations we are even bothering to do nominations AT ALL. Why not just let people vote on whatever they want?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit, didnt notice thee other thraed.
THE OFFICIAL 1970'S POLL NOMINATIONS THREAD.

:| (....), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, sod it, let's stick with seven. The worst that can happen is that the poll is RUBBISH and someone has to do another one.
Alba - Three and four, I think. Otherwise, one list might be much longer than the other.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Free your chronology and your ass will follow.

Sadly my ass is stuck in the 00's, how I'd love to have the 70's version back.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Although Alex, there's every chance that you're correct.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The best decade of all, by a mile.

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nominations here, please

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf i thought this was the nominations thread? TMFD ALERT

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i suppose now there will be another thread for suggestions and wittling down nominations, then another thread for the final noms list and voting instructions, then another thread for the results, then another thread for results fallout, oh when will the madness end?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't do this, it's too difficult - 4 albums and 3 songs?

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem, you are a treat :)

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

top 100 ilm poll-related threads...

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, if you want to post them here, that's fine. We'll just look the other way.

The other thread appeared all by itself - so it seemed a shame not to acknowledge it.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i just think it is easier to break it up, so you can find stuff quicker.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Its a good idea, Todd.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how I have no idea what's going to win this poll.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, no fucking clue here either

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on, you guys, you know it's going to be some imaginary album that Kevin Shields and Jarvis Cocker made together when they were 12.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interested a lot in who will win it, but I don't care about the winner in the way I did with more recent polls, because I'm not worried that it will be something bad. For this reason, I'm going to use my votes on getting good, obscur-ish things into the 100, rather than on trying to shift positions in the top 10.

As I said before, this is much more interesting than an 80s one, I think. And more interesting than a 60s one too.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

There's going to be some mad vote splitting on things like ABBA.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

For which reason, I'm tempted to get my nominations in early, so I can get my choice in without feeling like I'm adding to the splitting of that act's vote.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my era - my first records were at the start, my first gigs in the middle, loads of punk gigs, much of my favourite music is from then (soul, punk, pop). But we are overpolling now - the ILComics one just finished, there is a 1990s movie poll on ILE, the 2004 poll and this. We should try to spread them out a bit.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Just hurry up and nominate some Al Green, old man.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Martin, that was very rude.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we vote at the end if we don't nominate?

Bumfluff, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks

Bumfluff, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's okay, Alba - I certainly will, when I can narrow things down. Just did albums, and my shortlist has 164 albums. I suspect the songs one will be longer. I'll try at the weekend.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

My shortlist started with most of the albums of the 70s. It took me seven years to narrow it down to four albums.

KeithW (kmw), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Voting ought to be 2-stage, no? Get to a ballot of 250 or more albums/tracks from a preliminary vote on all nominations, and then vote on the top 100 from that list, so as to get a more meaningful final result?

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Thursday, 2 December 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Good God no.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 December 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It clearly needs three stages.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that doesn't qualify Alba -- came out in '86

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 2 December 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I can't wait for the 80s poll now.
