THE OFFICIAL 1970s POLL NOMINATIONS THREAD.

here.

[This is a poll being run by hobart paving. The thread with the rules and any discussion of them is here.

HOWEVER, to recap for the sake of convenience:

As with the other polls, this is a two-stage poll. First, everyone gets a chance to nominate albums and tracks that no one has yet nominated, then we all get to cast our votes from the nominated list.

You can nominate 7 things - either 3 albums and 4 tracks or 4 albums and 3 tracks. No other ratio is allowed. You can't nominate, say, 5 albums and 2 tracks. Try to check, doing a Find on this page, that your choice hasn't already been nominated - don't rely on others to check for you.

PLEASE ALSO MAKE IT CLEAR WHICH ARE TRACKS AND WHICH ARE ALBUMS

Deadline: 30th December. You might get just a bit longer than this, if hobart paving forgets to check on the correct day, but as he says -don't rely on his ineptness, "get those nominations in NOW!"]

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I object to the surfeit of lists, but speaking as the one putting the year-end thing together, it'll be much harder to do with this one running concurrently.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking as the one putting the year-end thing together, it'll be much harder to do with this one running concurrently

Actual voting will not take place until next year.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I am confident someone else will nominate The Man-Machine. Likewise some Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Al Green, Ramones.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual voting will not take place until next year.

Exactly. It's not like they're both being posted at the same time.

bill neil (inabillity), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual voting will not take place until next year.

Nominations will still probably distract (and all the threads that will go along with them), and will cause complaints of "well, I'm not going to participate in two lists at once!" It's not a big deal, I just don't see why this one has to be now.

But whatever. I guess it's started, hard to stop and all.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I agree with Bill, too, but also feel like once it's out, it's out.

The O'Jays -- Love Train

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

As is the Roy Wood nomination. Also, looking at ZZ top's web page, I think "La Grange" is also a track.

Sorry about this everyone. I think at some point these two lists got confused (well, I got confused, not the lists..) and I put the albums list over the singles list (which is still there, don't worry)..
the singles list being longer, a lot of albums from the end of the alphabet are in there.

I'd rather leave erroneous things in than take things that people have actually nominated out.. that way, a non-existent album gets no votes, rather than something that someone nominated being removed.

I am beginning to suspect the X-Ray Spex nomination is also a track, but I can't find a decent discography. Anyone know?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 4 February 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, all of the following appear to have been duplicated. Can anyone confirm if any of the following are album as well as singles titles? I'll check myself later, it'll just save me a bit of work.

It seems rather prescient that the intro to this thread speaks of my ineptness. Would you trust this man to conduct a poll?

No, emphatically not. But it'll be allright on the night. Trust me.

Ahem..

Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe
This Heat - 24 Track Loop
Three Degrees - Maybe
Tim Buckley - Song For The Siren

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That one was easy. I just discovered it last year so it's still something I listen to regularly. And repeatedly.

todd (todd), Friday, 4 February 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

NOMINATIONS END!!!

Here is the albums list - on tuesday I'll start a new thread with this on, and say how the voting will work. Until then, if you're still reading this thread, just take a look to see that your nominations are here fine and unfucked-up and lovely and tell me if they aren't.

Most of the track nominations should now be out of the albums list. The Three Degrees and ZZ Top stayed in, because of the uncertainty about whether there are albums of the same name, and because some of the original posts on this thread are missing, so there is no way of knowing if someone nominated them or not. Hopefully, other than that, the list is now perfect, and shiney, and new.

Perhaps the Star Wars listing should be changed, as it looks as if the album "Star Wars" was composed by a band called "Original Soundtrack". There probably is a band called that, somewhere. Was it composed by John Williams? I could list it like that, instead.

ZZ Top - La Grange

hobart paving (hobart paving), Saturday, 5 February 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I just checked allmusic.com and The Great Rock Discography. There is definitely no ZZ Top album called 'La Grange' - it's only a track.

There was a Three Degrees album Maybe, though.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Seen as Prince Charles doesn't appear to be turning up, "Maybe" we should vote it in on his behalf.

KeithW (kmw), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely remember that someone nominated La Monte Young's Well-Tuned Piano for the albums list. Maybe it was in the period that was lost from ILX history.

Going over a lot of these albums, I'm starting to think that Parliament may in fact be my favourite 70s album. Almost everything else gets a little long and boring in parts, or else trite and poncey, or maybe just unfortunately recorded. I think Unknown Pleasures may have fallen furthest from how much I used to like it, sadly, though it's still good. Sometimes it kind of sounds like a good hard rock album buried under thin new wave production.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, well I've made my ordered shortlists in my usual way (going down the lists, copying the items that I need to include, pasting them in relative order to what's already there), so I can now say how many votes we need. That's 74 for albums, and 105 tracks. I can accept 70 and 100, for the sake of rounder numbers. Any fewer and I will get distressed at what I have to omit.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 6 February 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm OK with the albums, but my tracks shortlist is already looking stubborn at 65.

Actually, I'm not OK with the albums in another respect. I've realised how obvious and canonical most of the albums from the 70s I own are. They were bought in a period of my life when I was mopping up back catalogues from all those lists with the help of 3 for £20 offers in HMV. I like a lot of them just fine, but I'm annoyed that I'll end up having to vote for them just cause I don't know enough of the more obscure nominations to be in a position to judge. Perhaps I shouldn't vote at all.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I should have nominated more Lightfoot.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 6 February 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, I just listened to Agharta for the first time. I had no idea anyone had taken guitar noise (as in NOIZE proper) that far by 1975. The last bit of "Interlude" is on par with a lot of later Japanese extreme shit. And that dual guitar rhythm/solo part about 38 min into the same track must be one of the heaviest moments in 70s heavy metal.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 6 February 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, why wouldn't you vote? Why does it matter? Should people who vote have heard all the music of the 70s? What if the people who've nominated more obscure choices haven't heard Bat out of Hell?

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be bad too, I guess, unless one saw it as a balance-redressing measure. I haven't heard Bat Out Of Hell, btw!

I'll vote, of course. It's just that can seen that this is how the albums poll might come out with a fairly typical list. Not because these would be our favourite albums if we'd heard everything, but just because canons become self-perpetuating - people buy the albums on them more, so they have a headstart in any future polls.

Anyway, I shouldn't preempt the results. All get a copy of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band before you vote though.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

can seen that = I can see that

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

AC/DC had cannons, Tag said to me the other day.

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That's as may be.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tag's team are currently holding the might of Mourinho's millionaires and it's quite exciting.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried Dr.Buzzard but only managed 1:06 before turning it off. Sorry.

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

How queer.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That actually made me feel quite sick in the stomach. Which track did you try?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It was called "I'll play the fool"

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That's just what you did.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bat Out of Hell isn't on the list, either the album OR the song! How the hell did that happen?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No one really likes it?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Bat out of hell" and "You took the words right out of my mouth".
"Two out of three ain't bad" works its way into conversations a lot.

KeithW (kmw), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm- it's kind of a shame that Germ-Free Adolescents didn't make it on here, but I guess we've got to draw the line somewhere...

o. nate (onate), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't Senor by Dylan on the tracks list at some point?

dan. (dan.), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget it, I see it.

dan. (dan.), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm- it's kind of a shame that Germ-Free Adolescents didn't make it on here, but I guess we've got to draw the line somewhere...

'Least that amazing single made it.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Evening Star supposed to be a bit hissy? Particularly the last track? It's an interesting effect if it's deliberate.

I listened to it for the first time yesterday. It's become my #1 or a serious contender at least. But it's a little disconcerting in that I've just realized that I have been unknowingly trying to rip off this album for years now.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sundar, I could swear I remember Eno saying he intentionally left certain audio imperfections (that could have been removed) in the remaster of the Fripp/Eno albums, so it might not have been intentional originally, but he may have left it in.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to it for the first time yesterday.

! I missed this before, because I had an itchy reply finger. I think it's got some fantastic stuff on it.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems to go beyond being an "imperfection". The hiss is nearly as loud as the music on the last track. Proto-Tim Hecker?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm listening to MP3's so I wonder if it's just the quality of the MP3's.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no "drums and wires"????
shame!

zeus, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, so it was just the MP3. It's still a little hissy but nothing like before.

(No "Baba O'Riley!")

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a voting thread for this yet that I'm just too blind to see?

so is this still happening?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Atnevon (Atnevon), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Only six more months of voting! I'm excited!

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Voting's over. Hobart asked me to write a blurb for one of the tracks (which I did) - but that was nearly a month ago now.
