Imagine what you could have bought instead of your 1000s of cds.

That's a lot of money. But, really what else is better than music to fill in spare time and silence? Drugs? You need music to appreciate drugs!

Triple Ho, Friday, 31 December 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have about 600.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, maybe a condo or something (I'm serious!). But I'm not complaining, and so far the simple winnowing down of things alone has paid for a slew of vacations alone, no worries there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

could have spent it on souping up your car or some bullshit like that.

money on CDS is money well spent. fuck anyone who says otherwise.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the 40-year old me is so going to laugh at that post.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I'm planning a MASSIVE rip-and-purge MP3-a-thon of pretty much my whole collection this year. Much like Ned, I'm realizing that had I opened a savings account a decade ago, the money I've since spent on CDs could have easily made for a downpayment on a place of my own.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure I could have bought love.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about the same thing, Tantrum. I think I'll miss those CD covers, though. But I'll never have to worry about losing or breaking them in some big move. Are you going to ebay them or what?

Triple Ho, Friday, 31 December 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is useful

Masked Gazza, Friday, 31 December 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy crap -- it never hit me before that I might have spent somewhere in the range of 10-20,000 dollars in my life on CDs

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I shudder to consider it. But, I'm guessing had it not been music, I'd have found some other equally irresponsible way to spend my money. But, I regret nothing. My love of music has, as far as I'm concerned, enriched my life and brought me much happiness.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex OTM.

I REFUSE TO FEEL GUILTY!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Estimate how much money you've spent on music in your lifetime

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

vacations in shit like real people

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The funny thing is if you bring 600 used CDs to a record store, do you think you'll even come CLOSE to $4 per CD? At $15/cd, they cost you 9000. At $4/cd, you would make $2400. No record store is going to write you a check for $2400. For 600 cds, you'll get $200 at the most, right?

Triple Ho, Friday, 31 December 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it sucks. "its got a scratch on it." no it doesn't asshole, YOU LIE!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

At $15/cd, they cost you 9000

who pays $15 for a cd, fool?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about the same thing, Tantrum. I think I'll miss those CD covers, though. But I'll never have to worry about losing or breaking them in some big move. Are you going to ebay them or what?

I really don't have the patience for Ebay.

There are a number of used CD shops around here that will take pretty much anything. I'm not so much worried about getting my investment back as simply getting rid of the discs. There are just too many of them.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't regret all the money I've spent either. I do wish I had the kind of fortitude Ned shows about selling a lot of stuff, but I just don't have the heart to sell most of what I have now. I have pruned it every now and then, but right now I just don't think there's a whole lot I'd want to get rid of. The few things I have put online for sale didn't even sell, so I'm just fed up with it.

Bimble..., Friday, 31 December 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

who pays $15 for a cd, fool?

Unnecessary rudeness and superiority. Fuck you.

Many of my cds cost between $8 and $10, but factor in the ones that cost $18 (when cds first came out) and shipping and handling costs on ebay and Amazon purchases. I think $15 is a good average. But, even if it isn't, you're still an asshole.

Triple Ho, Friday, 31 December 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

who pays @ $15 for a CD? BRITISH PEOPLE!!!!! Over there even cheap CD's are like nine or ten pounds aren't they?

So yeah, gabbneb, shut the fuck uppppp

Mediawhore, Friday, 31 December 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe gabbneb should've written it like this:

who pays $15 for a cd, foo?

see, now it's mock antagonistic.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 31 December 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I started putting my CDs up for sale at Amazon, I'm averaging $15-16 per, NET. Every single thing I bought at Amoeba while I lived in CA has been profitable. And of course, I'm ripping the disc or burning a copy. Sometimes I think I could make a living shopping at Amoeba's used sections and putting stuff up for sale immediately. "Who pays $15 for a cd, fool?" HAW.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 31 December 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm English and I have loads of CDs, I don't spend that much money on them though, I usually always buy secondhand, there's a shop near me that has a really good stock, on average I think I spend about £3.90 for an album. If there's something out that I really want and I figure I can't live without it and can't wait for it for someone to sell it to this shop then I'll buy it brand new.

Louie Strychnine, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"I shudder to consider it. But, I'm guessing had it not been music, I'd have found some other equally irresponsible way to spend my money."

I'm not so sure about "equally irresponsible" - I rather suspect that if I hadn't spent the money on music, I'd have spent it on one or more other things that would almost certainly have killed me years ago.

Other than that: if I'd been more sensible (and less Sensible) I'm sure I could have paid my mortgage off by now; or alternatively, if I'd carefully saved all the money that I've spent on music, I'd almost certainly have more than enough to buy a nice shiny new Ferrari - and what's more, with what I continue to spend on music, I'd probably be able to afford to tax, insure, service and put petrol in it too!

What would be the point of having a Ferrari if I didn't have any music to play in it 'though?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha a Rolls Royce!

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If i haddent bought all that music, I'd no doubt have something useless like a car or a flat or many happy holiday memories... but are those gonna get you through a dark night of the soul after a disasterous meeting with the Ex?..I think not.....

Wall of Cd's I salute you......

danny boy (danny boy), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably a third rate Conference centreback.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Rather than thousands of CDs, I coulda bought even MORE thousands of LPs!

But seriously, probably I've spent enough to have bought a slightly used Italian sports car. Can't say for sure, tho, since I've never really given a shit about cars & haven't had a license since '97. (BTW, can one of you give me a ride to Amoeba? A mere 4500 miles, round trip.)
