Along the lines of "My Girl Bill" by Jim Stafford, "CB Savage" by Rod Hart (such a gay name!) or Big Gay Al's "I'm Super". Got any more?

Arthur, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do ask do tell. Skittles!

Arthur, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do any of Divine's songs count?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Kissed a Girl." Jill Sobule.

Umm .. are you actually going to make this tape?

Chris .. or Christina?, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, if I can come up with enough songs. I don't know if I'd count Divine's songs, I don't know if they're cheesy or ridiculous enough. Imagine that. Maybe "T-Shirts and Tight Blue Jeans".

Arthur, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Asking for "novelty songs" makes it harder (no pun intended)... howabout "Macho Man"?

Sean, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I'm thinking more of the songs lampooning the effeminate, possibly oversexed gay male stereotype, like the last two I mentioned. Or "The Ballad of Ben Gay" by Ben Gay and the Silly Savages. Or the Frogs, actually! How could I forget about them?

Arthur, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"All in the Family" by Korn, feat. Fred Durst

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 31 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about "Proud to Be Gay" by Girl Joey?

"Proud to be gay / gay, gay, gay, gay / Hear what I say / Say it today"

Phil, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aerosmith, "Dude Looks Like a Lady". I think it sounds like a novelty song because the singer just sounds like he doesn't care, so it makes it good-natured slapstick ("Turn the other cheek, dear" - yeah I know it's risibly clumsy repartee, but that's well-intentioned whitebread types trying to 'snap' for you, really harmless. Steven Tyler is the heterosexual Peter Allen.)

dave q, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know who did the song, but I heard on the Dr. Demento show years ago a song called "I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus".

So there you kill two birds. You get the gay novelty and the Christmas novelty.

Oliver, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about "Hat's Off to Halford" by Atom and his Package? More of an outside commentary, but still funny. Ignore the statistics mistake in the line about Pantera.

Dave, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cf the entire pansy division catalogue.

also joe jackson's real men live, dedicated to the australian rugby team.

Geoff, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Glad to be Gay" by the Tom Robinson Band (and "Power in the Darkness," to a certain extent).

"The Drowners" by Suede

"Jet Boy/Jet Girl" by the Damned

"Lola" by the Kinks

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Frogs "Adam and Steve"

The Mavis's "Do you have a brother?"

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ted, Woody & Junior" by Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians

"Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat

"You've Got Another Thing Coming" by Judas Priest (think about it).

Alex in NYC, Friday, 4 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Gay Love by Bing Crosby. Recorded on 78 back when "gay" had yet to be "appropriated".

tiiiiiiiiiim (tiiiiiiiiiim), Monday, 22 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"In The Brownies" by Billy Connolly (a strange spoof of "In The Navy", in which Billy yells "Blow that thing baby! Suck it!" during a terrible harmonica solo).

Poppy (poppy), Monday, 22 December 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Unintentionally, Barry McGuire "Cosmic Cowboy"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Les Boys off one of the earlier Dire Straits albums is sort of baffling.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Jonathan Ross' appalling house band to thread!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Bloodbrother Be" The Shockheaded Peters

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that fake gay reggae song you wrote about once, Tom?

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"He's so gay" by Frank zappa

darren (darren), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

in honor of (homo) christmas, I give you Pansy Division:

You'll probably get sweaters
Underwear and socks
But what you'd really like for Christmas
Is a nice hard cock
You deserve a cute boy
Who's horny and queer
To make the most out of Christmas cheer
I wanna be your Christmas present
I wanna be your Christmas queer
I wanna be your Christmas present
Have a homo Christmas this year
Don't be miserable
Like Morrissey
Let me do you
underneath the Christmas tree
We'll push the packages
Out of the way
And after you've unwrapped me
Naked on the floor we'll play
Your family
Won't give you encouragement
But let me give you
Sexual nourishment
Licking nipples
Licking nuts
Putting candy canes
Up each other's butts

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Gay Heart- The Lemmmonheads.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys" - The Rolling Stones.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean REALLY. Keef and Loog Oldham came out and nobody noticed!

Here I am
All alone and all dressed up to kill
Cause I'd much rather be with the boys
Than be with you

Here I am
With the gang, I don't care where you are
Cause I'd much rather be with the boys
Than be with you

I hold up my head up high when I walk down the street
Now I'm a man I'm standing on my own two feet
Don't try to call me cause now I know the score
and now i know that i don't need you anymore

Don't put me on
It's over now, it's no good looking back
Cause I'd much rather be with the boys

Who's fooling who
It's over now and you've had all your headache from me
Cause I'd much rather be with the boys
Yes I'd much rather be with teh boys
Yes I'd much rather be with the boys
And the boys and the boys they would
Much rather be with the boys than with girls like you

Girls like you
Girls like you.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Any Teddy & Darrell stuff...total 60s gaysploitation music, hilarious.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"CB Savage" is a very funny record, and I don't even find it offensive, as I do that Frogs album. There's a cut on 50 Cent's album on which somebody affects a stereotypically gay voice. I don't recommend it, though.

dylan (dylan), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Senior "Chicks and Dicks"?

stephen morris, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Morten Abel: The Birmingham Ho

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Where's The Dress?" An '80s C&W response to Culture Club. Maybe it's more a crossdressing novelty song than an actual "gay" song.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Drowners" is about pole-smoking? I didn't know.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny, Are you Queer?

tyler (tyler), Sunday, 28 December 2003 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

by Josie Cotton. Yes! This song invented "Square Pegs"... well kinda.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 29 December 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No son of mine will be a not gay! You better get gay or I'll make you gay. Rodrigo, gay 'em up!

Sorry...

From Brain Candy: The Movie comes "I'm Gay" by the late, great Scott Thompson

gary glitter - "doing alright with the boys"

chiller, Monday, 22 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Ballad of Irving" by Frank Gallop.

ahem . . . Rod Stewart's "message" song "The Killing of Georgie."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 22 March 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Don Lennon - "Gay Fun"

Kornél Kovács (Kornél Kovács), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Le Tigre's "Dyke March 2001" balances affectionate self-parody in the samples ("There's no one tellin us where to stand or where to be ... ") with the simple unironic fun of the song overall. But that makes it not really a lampoon, nor 'gay.'

Dare, Monday, 22 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"my family tree" by y'all is a quite affecting song, but i can see how a lot of people would see it as a novelty, and they certainly have a way of hamming it up live...

I don't know much about my father's father.
He died when I was only three.
I don't know who knows any more about him
Than the man who's not in my family tree

My grandmother says that he was an honest man,
He never looked at another woman.
But I know that's because he only had eyes
For the man who's not in my family tree.

He kept leaving his family; he kept moving away.
She always found him eventually.
When she found him, she always found him shacking up
With the man who's not in my family tree.

I wonder now if he were living
What he would have to say to me.
But I'll never know too much about my father's father
And the man who's not in my family tree.

Additionally, Nick Crowe was the drummer for the rock band Gay Dad.

Scott Thompson is dead???????

Screeching Weasel's "I Wanna Be A Homosexual" and Sloppy Seconds' response song "I Don't Wanna Be A Homosexual."

androgynous, by the Replacements

Betty Fillmore, Friday, 15 October 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

“Big Bad Bruce” from the ’60s -- anybody remember who did it? Parody of “Big Bad John.” Bruce doesn’t die in a mine collapse, he dies in a salon fire.

Bryan Ferry's "It's My Party" off the first solo record.

Also, there’s a country song “How’s You Hole” by Red Peters (!) that bases all its humor on sophomoric delayed enjambent. Lines such as “How’s your whole/family...” “Wanna see my dick/tation machine” “Take your pants down/to the cleaners today” “Won’t you do my ass/trological chart” and the ultimate “Suck on a stiff cock/tail with me.” It killed ’em in 8th grade.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 15 October 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

One more: I think the earliest may be "I Love My Fruit" -- a little ditty by western swing band the Sweet Violet Boys from the '20s -- in which the singers affect the most lavender of tones to extol the virtues of chewing on nuts and nibbling banana skins. I kid you not.

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 15 October 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Camp Records: The Most Outrageous (and Queerest) Record Label of the 60s.

I'd Rather Swish Than Fight
Homer The Happy Little Homo
Rough Trade
London Derriere

...and a whole host of others. Gob-smacking.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 15 October 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Wyngarde - The Hippie and the Skinhead
Lou Christie - The Boys Lazed on the Verandah (this is particularly odd)
Ween - Mister Richard Smoker

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't "The Boys LAzed on the Verandah" from that weird "Straight out of Borstal" thing that Simon Napier Bell did with the help of the craziest boys on the Verandah, the Glimmer Twins?

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It was written by Peter Sarstedt, that's all I know about it

Daddyismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it at home. I'll have to check tonight. I'm intrigued. It's certainly not Lou on "Borstal." Did Lou do this as a single or on an album?

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have it on a compilation of his, don't know where it came from originally, it's from around 1970 I think?

Back in the seventies, there was a Finnish novelty gay singer called Kain Käärmeenpoika, which translates to "Cain Serpent's Son". His biggest hit was a song titled "Homon kyrpä ei naiselle seiso", or in English, "A Homo's Cock Won't Erect for a Woman". I haven't heard the song, unfortunately (it's almost impossible to find), but I'd love to.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Käärmeenpoika -- I think I've found my new alias!

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Eminem's "Just Lose It" is a gay novelty song.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 15 October 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Nasty "I can't leave his behind"

ROBERTT, Friday, 15 October 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Cruisin' the Streets by The Boys Town Gang
Walk the Night by the Skatt Bros.
Male Stripper by Man II Man

are just a few of my favorite blatantly gay disco songs. You can say they are not novelty songs but rather sincere, but the kitsch value is extremely high here.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 15 October 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The Miracles, "Ain't Nobody Straight in L.A." (unintentionally novelty as far as I can tell)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 15 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That Bing Crosby tune is a highlight of 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man,' which Columbia/Legacy put out about a decade ago. A bit like what the Camp Records website describes, except that these are original recordings by male singers with no gender substitutions.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 15 October 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

SCISSOR SISTERS

manuel (manuel), Saturday, 16 October 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

gary glitter - "doing alright with the boys"

This is a pedo novelty song, not a gay one....

Anyway, add "I'm Too Sexy" and Norwegian star Morten Abel's "The Birmingham Ho"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 16 October 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)
