I listened to most of the box set last night and loved it! The 'jazz' song on the third disc with all the asides and band introductions was like Mel Torme on crack.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But didn't you know--they're all about the mediocre.

If you do not like the Bunny Brains, then . . .

Aaron Hertz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and if the bunnybox is too much for you, wait until you get a load of the upcoming belgian triple-cd live bunny explosion!!! it's raining bunnypoop!!!!! in benelux!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard rumours of savvy management bribing Pitchfork writers to ensure a much sought after 2 or less rating.

"Okay, I'm done being a nice guy about this: If you don't like Blueberry Boat, I don't like you. It's no longer a matter of taste, other than the fact that I have good taste, whereas you, Fiery Furnaces-hater, do not."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

17 dollars for 3 CDs? Where can I pick this up? Seriously, Ill go out and buy it tonight.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

first pfm-lover replacing "blueberry boat" with "bunny brains" and "fiery furnaces" with "bunny box" wins a japanese radiohead import only cd single

"and frankly, I've seen dozens of bands playing in Connecticut church basements, high school cafeterias and Elks' clubs who were much better, or at least more distinctive."

WHO??? Bands from Connecticut? I want names. Maybe he's talking about Hatebreed.

the "why i am a suicide girl!" ad totally lends this review gravitas.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

What do these guys actually sound like? As messy and all over the place as he says?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard of this band. From the PFM review, I'm imagining a cross between Boredoms and the Flaming Lips. That combination has the potential to be awesome but is equally likely to be a cacaphony of shit. So is the PFM guy a cracksmoker?

Ned, are you reviewing this for AMG?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that is a great review. makes me want to hear this.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I was actually going to post a link onto the Rolling 2004 Negative Reviews That Make The Subject Sound Awesome Thread (or start a new one for the new year but I figure it was too close for ILX comfort. But what did I know?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, are you reviewing this for AMG?

I asked but was not assigned it. :-( I'm sure someone good will get to do the honors. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's difficult to imagine anyone but the most rabid 30 or 40 aficionados of American pop culture arcana and rock so obscure it barely qualifies as underground finding much worth in this nonetheless lovingly compiled collection, even with its (low by collectors' standards) $17 price tag. The sad truth is that this doesn't dig up some underappreciated geniuses or lost classics of Northeastern counterculture. It just puts the output of a willfully, justifiably obscure local band in one place for easy consumption."

This is just silly. they've put out records on menlo park, blackjack, narnack, matador, now sound, and a bunch of other labels and when they play in new york they play at places like the knitting factory (and rooftops and basements, but no vfw halls in a while). they toured with sebadoh twice! granted, they only have 10 rabid fans, but they are hardly "willfully" obscure.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

but it is a great review in the vein of reviews that make you wanna hear a band. definitely. the review in the new issue of magnet was much more subdued and positive. they loved it, and bunnybrains doesn't sound anything like paul westerberg or wilco.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it probably sounds like GBV though

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

at least their marketing sense

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually like the archival review stuff in the back of magnet. in a "i'm a big fat hippy nerd" kinda way.

Nah. GBV never pushed my Terrastock/psych/drone buttons like Bunnybrains can, for a start.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ok and I'm still supposed to be surprised Magnet approveS?

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

****Disclaimer: I didn’t read the Pitchfork review****

Utter and complete genius, in a “kick-out-the-jambs-and-smother-them-with-hot-sauce-then-smoke-them-then-eat-them” sense. Lots of jams that go nowhere forever, songs that end at one promising riff, Dan Bunny on the radio or radio hosts mentioning the Bunnybrains, complaining calls from the neighbors, etc etc etc and I haven’t even watched the DVD yet. Fantastic in its own way, but year after year of this stuff would begin to get old the way GBV did for me a few years ago.

Desperately want to review this.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Crystalized Movements (Wayne + Kate of Twisted Village)"

Kate's from Danbury! Same with Charles Ives & Youth Of Today. Thurston is from Bethel, same as Meg Ryan. Heck, my friends from high school had a band called Wide Awake and even THEY have recieved reissue treatment.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should reissue whatever old Violent Children stuff is around. they were cool. ray cappo played drums and warren bunnybrain played guitar in that band.

Elisa, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Elisa, do I know you?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, this is elisa flynn?!! then i do know you!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. Connecticut is not very big. I bet somehow if we don't actually know each other we almost do. Elisa Ambrogio.

Elisa, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh okay. well, hello there! elisa flynn started the bunny brains with malcom and bob and my brother. i haven't seen her in years.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't Landing from CT too? (on the opposite end of the droney set..)

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Originally Utah but yes, they relocated there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought Landing were from Utah?

And, honestly, guys, I mean no offense or anything, but I hate Connecticut. I once got a $250 speeding ticket in Connecticut, and I have to drive through there ALL THE TIME between RI and NY. I also have a personal vendetta against Danbury, because when I was six, I injured myself on the carousel at the Danbury mall (sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas; I was with my grandparents, who used to live in Stamford. [and also Ridgefield, which has a really great hot dog cart on Main Street [or did as of 5 years ago, at least]])

xxxpoosssttt, Ned wins.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you would have liked what was in the space that the mall sits on, ian. the rootingest tootingest county fair you have ever seen. and a bitchin'racetrack with the coolest drag races known to man. and cotton candy!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

but yeah, connecticut kinda blows. and i should know. i'll take new york state or massachusetts anyday over connecticut.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that sounds way better than the mall. I remember there being some old, decaying house sitting on a hill of mud around there too. Around the time my family was moving from Florida to Rhode Island, I was like "WHY CAN'T WE LIVE THERE???"

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, the Danbury Mall is the worst place on earth.

C0L1N B--KETT, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's still better than most of the rest of the state!

C0L1N B--KETT, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i always hated the mall. although i stole my very first cds there when my brother worked st record town. 2 rykodisc samplers, talk talk's the colour of spring, a 60's garage comp, and a monochrome set twofer.plus others that i can't remember.i think barber's adagio for strings might have been one of them. my dad bought me a cd boombox when i graduated from high school.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

guilford, where my family is from originally, is really pretty. it's on the long island sound. it reminds me of martha's vineyard. they were actually created by the same burst of polar ice/rock activity a zillion years ago. same feeling to both places.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

To me CT rules supreme despite its numerous and blatant claims to lameness. I grew up where you could sit in the middle of weird farm roads because cars never came and go sledding on golf courses when it snowed. The Mark Twain House, Rocky Neck (better when I was little), Devil's Hopyard, awesome west indian food, a million italian bakeries, least amount of 'hip' people per square mile than I have ever encountered anywhere. Despite its proximity to NYC and Boston, it might as well be Oklahoma. No one considers themselves 'in the know' or even cares to be. People tend to like the stuff at the mall, be into meeting up at TGI Friday's, before they go to see a John Grisham movie. It is like it is 70 degrees in peoples minds all the time. That is kind of cool. Now that I don't have to live there.
Once the bunny brains played at my house in Hartford!

E, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Connecticut is also rumored to have the highest KKK membership north of the Mason-Dixon; anyone care to confirm or refute this?

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd think Indiana would be hard to beat, but I don't know for sure.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't find any hard statistics but like, whoa. Be forewarned this contains some extemely fucked up racist dude from Connecticut shit:

"Yeah, Dan that stat about the Klan membership in Connecticut is accurate (in fact, at one point during the peak of the Klan’s power, CT actually had the second highest rate of Klan membership). There is intense division and tension in CT between the urban and the rural areas. Also, in CT there has been a long history and pattern of extremely violent and cowardly black on white crimes. For your continued edification on the matter: most recently a young, white female who was a graduate student at the University of New Haven was dragged out of her car at an intersection one night by four “African-Americans", whereupon they proceeded to a)kidnap her, b)gang-rape her, c) beat her to the brink of death, and d)leave her bloodied body laying in the woods for dead. Now I know Dan Rather didn’t tell you about that one, and I know there are no MTV sponsored candle-light vigils for the victim (because, hell, she’s only white–it’s not like she’s gay or hispanic or something where we could pin an “ism” on the savage animals), but rest assured, that incident is only one of many, many crimes like that which have been committed in CT by our “African-American” community. As usual, the local news would not call it a hate crime, and in fact, all of the stations except for FOX would not give a description of the savage monkeys for fear of “placing minorities in a bad light.” And as usual, the Democrat machine in CT is silent (as well as the rather effeminate Republicans). Go venture into the farmlands and woodlands of CT however, and into many of the white, working class neighborhoods of the old mill-towns—-you’ll see more rebel flags than if you were in Mississipi, and FOR GOOD REASON. The hate in CT is only increasing, as more and more white youths in CT are beginning to turn their backs to the social indoctrination machine of the public school system and open their eyes to the cold, ugly reality of black America and the absolute moral cowardice of the Eminem worshipping liberal machine. Call me a racist, a Nazi, or whatever witty phrase or term that meets your fancy, but deep down in the guts of your WHITE mind, you know us north-country white wolves are RIGHT. Just go walk through their free housing (what some call “projects")some time. (And no, I’m not a Klan member)

How much should I ebay this Figurine CDr for? It has David's remix of "Our Song" (which appeared only on a compilation and one 7 inch), the original "Our Song" from the Motorway release and a David Figurine song "Our Pure Efficiency". There's a note (apparently from David" in the packaging with notes about the March records comp one of the tracks appeared on.

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

about the same as i should ebay my navio forge LP?

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There is one of those little novelty photobooth stickers of the members of Figurine on it as well.

LSD ARISTOCAT (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Scott - I spoke to Elisa F less than a year ago. She's well.

2) Langhorne Slim(e) was supposed to send me the Bunnybrains box, which I was supposed to write liner notes for, but he never sent it. Dan was supposed to send me one, too. I mean, I WAS in the band, sort of, for a show or two! Scott, weren't you there teh night I played bass with them? I had the couch cushion mask.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 13 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, roger, that was the one and only time we met. that's the nite devendra made devil horns at me when i told him i wrote about music. my hearing was shot for months after that show cuz i was crouched in front of an amp during the set throwing records at the crowd. ouch!

i tried to kiss elisa flynn once in front of the whorehouse my brother worked at in danbury after me and warren bunny drank too much crazy horse malt liquor. she wasn't having it. and i don't blame her! at least i think that was her.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 January 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just thinking of that nite in nyc cuz i bought samara's album yesterday and she played that nite with hamish (and she was sooooo dreamy too that nite. her guitar sounded like gold to me.).
