Top 5 albums or artists everyone (well, everyone here) hates that you at least like a little bit

1) The Libertines: I don't suffer from Post-NME-Stress-Syndrome so basically I don't know (much less care) if Doherty's a burglar basehead Gallagher-gone-ODB or what. They do pleasant-enough Kinks-esque pop and I know there's probably better things to hype but there's nothing horribly offensive about them. Well, to me. Your mileage may vary. Significantly.

2) Loverboy: I haven't seen them mentioned here that much, so I don't get much of a handle on what their status is in the post-rockist scheme of things, but if any group has some singles that are in severe need of a "wow this is great campy pop-new wave-rock" reassessment, it's them. Stick "Hot Girls In Love" or "Turn Me Loose" or "The Kid is Hot Tonight" on a mixtape next to the Scissor Sisters and enjoy the epiphany.

3) Franz Ferdinand: The biggest ILM punching bag of 2004, apparently. I should've just stuck with my initial "enh, not too good" distrust but then I had to go and listen to "Take Me Out". D'oh. Half the record I could take or leave, but the more we hear about them the less we hear about Taking Back Sunday. So there's that.

4) El-P: His beats are all Sabbath/Numan/RZA/Moroder like damn. Dude talks a lot of knotty arglebargle but that just means I get pick up new things every time I listen to his lyrics. His collab with Ghostface also murders you and stuffs your head in a woodchipper.

5) U2: Well, actually, 70% of everything they've ever done on and off record is pretty much retarded, but do we really need 20 threads to reiterate that?

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

what collab with ghostface?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

there are loverboy fans here! i think.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

This track called "Hide Your Face", which sorta leaked (ripped from some WFMU show) and is probably going to be released as a single at some point, or stuck on DJX Presents 4.

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I own 5 U2 albums. I love 1 of them and like 4 of them very much.

I also have all of Radiohead's album minus Pablo Honey, and I like each and every one of them. I love OK Computer.

supercub, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

1. The Ghost of Cain by New Model Army - Largely perceived as insufferable crusty-punks with long hair who wear clogs and are well past their sell-by date, but fuck you, dickwad, this album rocks!

2. Belfegore by Belfegore - I know one other person here (hello, Dee) who even knows about them. They rock so fuckin' hard and you SUCK for not knowing them.

3. MC Paul Barman -- I just recently learned that he is apparently hated here. I think he's fuckin' hilarious.

4. Birdland by Birdland - I happened to notice that they had a new retrospective (!!!!!!) out today in the import section at Virgin. Since when does a band with only one album to their credit deserve a retrospective? Whatever, they had a couple of singles that were way better than the crappy shit most ILX'rs soil their shorts over.

5. the Plasmatics -- Apart from the truly lovely and seemingly since missing-in-action Jeanne Fury, I can't name another fan of theirs on ILX. I actually almost got in a bout of fisticuffs with a fifteen year old girl last week about them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot (most in fact) of ILM likes Franz Ferdinand. However, there are some extremely vocal detractors.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have liked a Paul Barman track (but I remember thinking that one was enough).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the plasmatics! and so does my brother. he was around here a minute ago. he had all their records. they warped my young brain. well, them and motorhead.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

100th Window has a couple songs that aren't great.

On the whole I like Pablo Honey more than The Bends.

Vertical Horizon, Incubus, Lifehouse, Lostprophets, Sum 41, Taking Back Sunday, Yellowcard, and Hoobastank are responsible for some of my favorite rock singles of the last half-decade.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the only person on ilm who loves the second harvey danger album. i can just feel it!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If you think of Barman as comedian first, MC second, he's a bit easier to fathom. He had a fake newspaper insert in one of CDs and called it The Jew Dork Rimes. I'm sorry, but that rules.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I like the first Bright Eyes album, and i like some of Ryan Adams stuff too.

supercub, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This is probably the most Loverboy-friendly zone on the Net! As long as Chuck's here. And dave q. And Anthony M. And, uh, me, kinda. The Killer's sure as hell aren't hated as long as I'm here either.

Norah Jones (Come Away With Me)
Cex (Role Model anyway)
Arrested Development (3 Years...)

and getting into "at least a little bit" territory:

Dave Matthews Band (Before These Crowded Streets sounds decent to me)
old Tori Amos
a few things from early Phish

The Postal Service/Death Cab for Cutie
The Beautiful South

1. The Dave Matthews Band (but only up to BEFORE THESE CROWDED STREETS)

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, is that including Before These Crowded Streets or not?

Eh, that one's like 50% rule and 50% suck.

And then after that, they all of a sudden turned COMPLETELY to shit. No one knows why.

some of the otis discourse. amateurist doesn't like him much either.

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

1. N.E.R.D. - Fly Or Die. Apparently everyone hates or is at least bored silly by this, but I've probably listened to it as much as any album that I bought this year and had a pretty good time doing so, I might add. I even like the one that has Good Charlotte rapping on it, and the one with Lenny Kravitz.
2. The Postal Service - Give Up. Apparently this has become a fashionable whipping boy around these parts, but I still think this is a solid pop album with good beats and hooks galore.
3. Magnetic Fields - i. Apparently this is seen as a major fall-off from 69 Love Songs, but to me it's a crafty songwriter at the top of his game.
4. Outkast - The Love Below. Yes, it sounds a bit like Prince in parts. Yes, it is self-indulgent. Yes, it still deserves to be considered one half of the best album of 2003.
5. Scorpions with the Berlin Philharmonic - Moment of Glory. Actually I don't know if everyone hates this or not, but I heard part of it at a party the other night, and I thought it wasn't bad at all.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevie Ray Vaughn/Eric Clapton
A thread about SRV got so ugly it got locked. I saw him live and thought he was great and still like those first three studio albums. The label and his estate have strip mined studios to make cash off of his corpse, but that isn't his fault. I wouldn't say I am huge fan of Clapton, but I really like the Cream records, Bluesbreaker album with Mayall, Layla and I have a couple of his early solo records on vinyl. That is probably an unpardonable sin if you have read some of threads on Clapton.

Grand Funk Railroad
I don't think I have seen much love for Grand Funk, but I really like that band. It is like the best things about some garage rock, except blown up bigger and more over the top. I can enjoy listening to Grand Funk Railroad just for the texture of the recordings. It is a whole lot better than some of that freakout stuff like the Cosmic Jokers, which is also about the wah wah pedal. Get it together! Sin is a good man's brother! People, lets stop the war, save the land and get down with some footstompin' music. Are you Ready?

Fu Manchu
See above.

There are quite a few more classic, indie and alternative rock groups that some like and some people hate including Ted Nugent, Sebadoh, Van Halen (w/Roth of course), Mudhoney, Kiss, Superchunk etc...

Oh yeah, I almost forgot that guy named Elvis Presley.

earlnash, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigur Ros and The Darkness.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i can only think of two:

Tom Petty
Eric Clapton (though only specific incarnations i.e. Bluesbreakers, Cream, Delaney& Bonnie, some of Derek and a smattering of songs from his solo records up until '78 or so. The rest can hang.)

Will (will), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and Foghat. I can think of only about four songs, but they're all great. I wouldn't imagine they'd get much love around here.

Will (will), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Belfegore by Belfegore - I know one other person here (hello, Dee) who even knows about them. They rock so fuckin' hard and you SUCK for not knowing them.

Excuse me, I want credit. I bought the Belfegore album eons ago.

New Model Army's Ghost of Cain was good too! I kinda forgot about that one, to be honest. I was way into No Rest For The Wicked when it came out.

THE KILLERS own this thread, imho.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

COLDPLAY

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Tortoise/Sea and Cake/Jim O'Rourke/Papa M/etc. -- not that all post-rock is good, but when it's good it's good.

2. Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia

3. Gillian Welch

4. Dave Matthews

5. That song from Dawson's Creek (I don't wanna wait ...) -- I think the melody is awesome and the production is good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, I see all that and raise you a BILLY TALENT.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

* The Fitness "Call Me For Together"

(i like three of these a lot.)

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like "Terror Twilight".

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Seahorses - Do It Yourself (surely no-one else likes this!)
David Bowie - Never Let Me Down (at least half of this is excellent)
Electronic - Raise The Pressure (Dad-house alert! Actually it's *good* Dad-house.)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Embrace, obviously.

I am shocked that Dr C likes that Seahorses album! I heard their aborted sophomore LP the other week; fucking awful.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of anything else I like that most people here hate.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Bright Eyes: Lifted ... - You know his steez.
N*E*R*D: Fly or Die - Faux-rock greatness.
Lil' Jon & The East Side Boyz: Kings Of Crunk - As Reynolds said at some point: You can almost smell their bad breath of chicken and stale weed smoke.
Handsome Boy Modeling School: White People - Luv it. The Automator is hip hop's equivalent of the golden angle. Or maybe it's the golden shower.
Tears for Fears: Sowing The Seeds Of Love - Ah, the grandeur.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Does ILM hate "Sowing The Seeds Of Love"?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure but they should, according to this place's general stance.

Jay-Kid (Jay-Kid), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Electronic - Raise The Pressure (Dad-house alert! Actually it's *good* Dad-house.)

Aagh! I Luuuurve this one. Do people hate it here? Far and away the best Electronic, and I love the way it mixes the dancy techno tracks with the strummy Marr guitar tracks. MMMM HMMM GOOD.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

1. The Dave Matthews Band (but only up to BEFORE THESE CROWDED STREETS)

Who hates The Big Express by XTC? "Wake Up"? "All You Pretty Girls"? "This World Over"? "Everyday Story of a Smalltown"? It's overflowing with great tracks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree, but a lot of XTC fans don't, apparently. :/

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

music fans that like other XTC albums don't like it
people who hate XTC hate it

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

here we go. time to own up to being totally lame.

- basically, i like all four weezer albums. totally love the first two, can definitely listen to the second two, although i dont own them.
- Monster by REM totally fucking rules. and yes, i love early early Chronic Town/Murmur-era stuff, too.
- um, a few blues traveler songs.
- also, probably 10-15 phish songs, including most of Billy Breathes.

embarrassing songs i love from the mid/late-90s.
- "inside out" by eve6 (oh jesus, this is embarrassing).
- "all star" by smash mouth.
- "better days" by citizen king.
- "santeria" by sublime.
- "santa monica" by everclear. actually, a few everclear songs.

Wow... I've never heard anyone describe Melanie as 'dope' before, but I'm a big fan. There's a Melanie Music Society here:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Boldinger/melanie.htm

I think I was on their list for a while.

Searching ILM for "Melanie" brings up a few snarky comments and little else. Time she had her own thread.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Coldplay a whole lot. I like Franz Ferdinand, and think people don't get them (they're as artsy as Laibach - really!). I like Ted Nugent, Grand Funk Railroad, Cactus, Foghat, Bad Company and Deep Purple. I like Dio. I love Roth-era Van Halen (all six albums on my iPod - listen to 'em at least once a week).

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally winning this.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Catherine Wheel hated? Also, I'm a newbie, but I'm surprised by the lack of Bowie love.

Miss Chevious Grin, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Belfegore by Belfegore - I know one other person here (hello, Dee) who even knows about them. They rock so fuckin' hard and you SUCK for not knowing them.

HEY! I've echoed your pro-Belfegore sentiments on several occasions, Alex! When you dared to fantasize (in print) about a CD reissue, it was ME who upped the ante by proposing that it be an enhanced CD with the "All That I Wanted" video (best vid EVAH) attached. A classic simultaneous debut/swan song on one of my alltime favourite labels (Elektra), and one of the coolest non-C&W song titles ("Comic With Rats Now"!) I know of, to boot. So in conclusion, I do know of 'em and therefore DON'T SUCK! Or, if I do suck, at least it's only in the figurative sense, and not for that reason. (Maybe 'cause I like early Barbra Streisand...)

(Oh, and then there's Bimble too. And Chuck put 'em in "Stairway To Hell".)

Myonga Von BoneToPick (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Catherine Wheel hated?
For the most part, no. Ferment and Chrome usually hog all the love, though.

I genuinely enjoy Interpol, The Rapture, and Xiu Xiu, but I haven't seen much hatred for the latter two, which is surprising because I think most people would loathe them more than Interpol. (I didn't find about them through Pitchfork, though, which is probably part of the reason why I can stand them.)

Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has been savaged on these boards on more than one occasion. And while I don't think it's the band's best album – I think Wilco peaked with Summerteeth – I still enjoy almost 2/3s of the album.
In deference to the haters, though, I've never been able to listen to a Ghost is Born all the way through. Maybe I'm more of a Jay Bennett fan.
