OK, so you love Annie; now meet Bertine.

Scandinavia has a habit of churning out these perfect pop ice maidens. And Richard X has a habit of getting involved - you have to track down their 2003 collaboration A Girl Like You.

As described on her official site, she "takes you from Madonna to Moroder via the two P's of Prince and the Pet Shop Boys", though I think her voice is pure Sinead O'Connor. I think her albums have only been released in Norway, but I'd love to see her cross over Annie-style.

Oh, I think her artwork (the inserts have fab photography) shits all over Annie's -- am I the only one who hates the cover for and font used for Anniemal? -- and actually, I've come to really prefer Rollerskating to Annie's album too.

Her two last albums have both sold around 100.000 in Norway, which is a lot here.

And, in a way, she is better than Annie. Stronger songs. "Sweet Injections" in particular is a marvellous album, largely produced by Richard X.

I made a compilation of Bertine songs for my boyfriend. He's been playing it in the shop, and all the staff have asked for copies of it.
